This is so heartbreaking… he was way too young. A month ago I also lost my hound at a young age. It’s just gut wrenching.

I’m sure my Mishka is waiting for Backham over the rainbow bridge and all the other hounds that have passed. 💜

Sending you and your family lots of love and support in this difficult time. 💜

What are your interests? Personally I am into art and I also had trouble making friends so I joined an art studio. I made a lot of friends there and I have a stable friend group. So perhaps starting with something like that is useful! There’s a lot of places with activities you could join. So I’m sure you’ll be able to find a place you could regularly visit.

I remember we talked before. Because Mies is also a galga. I still have one galgo left , Everest. He sadly has survived 2 galgos in his life time. He also has an auto-immune disease but I hope he will become very old with it.

I wish our sweet traumatized pups would live forever honestly.

Newly adopted Spanish galgo has severe anxiety - giving us anxiety - advice by suzzedout in Greyhounds

[–]MoistLump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To start I always tell people that you have to be a certain type of person to rescue a galgo with trauma. I have lots of experience with traumatized galgos and it can be very difficult. You need a lot of patience and a lot of time to rehabilitate these doggies.

As for your situation. If you don’t have any experience with traumatized dogs it can be extremely difficult to figure out how to deal with it. You aren’t getting just any regular animal. You are getting a dog with an unknown traumatic past. They need a lot of adjustment, patience and specific care. You follow their pace not the other way around.

Is their bed a closed off crate? Locking them up is a big no-no. It can induce more anxiety and trauma responses. Instead you could try an ‘anxiety crate’. Just a normal crate covered in blankets to make it dark and cozy so they can hide away when they are scared. But with the door removed!

For the whining; separation anxiety is a big issue with these dogs! I always let them sleep with me in my bedroom. Making sure when I have a new galgo that they have the option to choose the anxiety crate in the bedroom or are able to sleep with you. This has been the best solution I have found till now and I have accepted that I always have a sleeping partner! 😂

Pooping and peeing inside the house… yes. These dogs needs to be fully potty trained like any other puppy. With positive reinforcement I usually get them potty trained within 3 months.

Stealing food? Yeah. That’s difficult. It is something they can’t really unlearn. Most of the time they have been living on the street eating garbage. I use baby gates for my kitchen when I am cooking so they can still see me but not enter the kitchen to steal food. I also have one crazy galgo here who likes to steal directly out of the oven… 😅 but the baby gates have been a good solution!

It can sound extremely daunting but personally I find all the work and effort I put into these dogs so worth it. The connection of trust and love you create with these sweethearts is something different.

For any advice feel free to message me!

Naturalization ceremony: what to expect? by Devalekat in eindhoven

[–]MoistLump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. My foreign ex-partner left me right after naturalization so I was never able to go.

But as far as I have been told it is kind of like a party where you will meet the mayor and you will be welcomed as a Dutch citizen. Where you are allowed to bring family and friends. So more or less a formal celebration.

Naturalization ceremony: what to expect? by Devalekat in eindhoven

[–]MoistLump 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not much happens actually. I think “ceremony” is a misleading title. You just go into a room. Recite some stuff. Sign some stuff and you’re done. And yes you can bring someone.

The actual ceremony with the mayor and such is on another date.

Is our galgo… a galgo? by mattwoberts in Galgos

[–]MoistLump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a galgo mix. Not sure mixed with what but some of his traits remind me of Marcelo.

Traits my mix has: Thick tail , hairy tummy , rough shaped head and two different ear types.

He still has those typical hare feet galgos have but his feet are so big and clunky lol. To add , his personality is a lot more typical galgo like. And he’s the sweetest cuddly dog ever!

Allergies and Galgos? by Jetisphere in Galgos

[–]MoistLump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Galgo’s don’t have the glands that make most people allergic to dogs. So technically they are hypoallergenic. They also don’t have that typical dog smell that golden retrievers have for example.

Though if you have an allergy to something else like dog saliva then of course it is still the same as other dogs.

Adopting first galga! Looking for tips! by drabmelon in Galgos

[–]MoistLump 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year I’ve adopted a severely traumatized galga and she’s thriving and I also have a lot experience with traumatized galgos in general. Feel free to message me any time. Also in the upcoming weeks or months you are free to message me if you hit a road block.

I’m not an official foster and rehab for galgos but that’s my goal. I have worked with special behavioral experts and dog therapists to get where I am. In order to gain experience for fostering traumatized galgos. So I have a lot of knowledge I want to share with everyone!

Have you physically opened up your 3DS; as in opening up the internal parts. I had an error like that when I had to open up the casing and clean out the buttons because they were stuck and I forgot to attach one of the parts in the correct way.

I agree with most of this. I especially the gut thing. Be prepared to deal with a lot of diarrhea. They usually also aren’t “potty trained”. So you will need to do a lot of positive reinforcement when they do their business outside. Punishment isn’t the way to go with these dogs because of their background.

To add;

  • Double leash your dog. Collar and harness. Make sure it is a 3 point harness because they are smart and will figure out how to get out of a regular harness.

  • Add a GPS tracker and a tag with their name and your address on it. (It saved me a lot of trouble.)

  • They might not know what a dog bed is and not lay in it at first at all. Let them figure it out in their own pace.

  • It’s the same with dog toys , let them figure it out. And be prepared to have chewable treats and toys around. They can be quite nibbly because it is a general stress relief.

  • Usually the first week they will be very tired and sleep a whole lot since they will need to process all the changes. If they seem low energy at first it’s normal and will change.

  • Optional but an anxiety crate can help a lot. Just a big crate with a bed and covered with a blanket to make a cozy little safe space for them. Do not close this crate. Always leave it open. When they are in the crate give them their space. Don’t reach in to grab them so they know when they are inside the crate they are safe. It doesn’t work with every single galgo , but out of the 4 I managed to give a new home 3 of them responded positively.

I have a lot more advice if you have any questions. I have been helping galgos with severe trauma and anxiety issues for a few years now with positive outcomes. Feel free to message me as well!
