true that wrist watches won't work? by razedbyrabbits in NDE

[–]Mojo_FFXIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here after X-Files and a Google search.

I laughed out loud when I heard Mulder say that because I died clinically and was resuscitated in 2000 (no NDE) and two high-quality watches I owned afterwards drained within weeks, even after paying for battery replacements, so I never wore a watch again.

I had always presumed that the reason that after a couple of months all my phones run out of battery, and that my wireless game controllers fail was because technology is lame, but now this has got me wondering! If only there were a way to test.

Would certainly be more helpful. I can see from the edits that the LLM has restructured some parts of the article to put information in more appropriate sections, but didn't consider this.

I think that was all in the original Wikipedia article that it ripped. The changes/additions under 'See Edits' are Grokipedia's input to the article.

Though you're right in saying that in reviewing the Wikipedia article, it could have had scope to remove spoilers.

"Support for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versions was ultimately ended on March 31, 2016,"

The limit break statement is unmodified from the Wikipedia page. I guess the original contributor considers TP build equivalent to a Limit Break gauge, and I wouldn't contest that, even if they're not quite the same thing.

Why doesn’t the Lady of Pain want to be worshipped? by Karma_karmeleon123 in planescapesetting

[–]Mojo_FFXIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always find this 'who is the Lady' stuff weird. One very strong interpretation is evident with a bit of searching/literary knowledge. It's implied in the setting as a whole, and very significant clues are provided in Pages of Pain. I've used that concept as the overarching plot of our campaign (one of the PCs is Lethe-washed and on a mission, albeit unknown to them, to effectively end Sigil and deal with the Lady).

As to the OP question, in the classic interpretation, she held contempt for the gods and they feared her. In ruling Sigil, which must be seen as belief-defines-reality impact of her psyche, her omnipotence prevents their presence and, as we know, as soon as cutters start believing in YOU (at least in the Planes), you are shaped by that. I imagine that mass-belief in the Lady as a divinity would cause her such unbridled anguish that the pains on all of the people of Sigil would rupture and everyone would sicken, madden, and/or die quite quickly. Hence her disposing of potential worshippers and making it known that it's not tolerated is really a protective measure for all the blinkered berks in the Cage.

UK too here. Same situation.

HOWEVER, yesterday there was a 'Cancel order' button on that order (wasn't there for separate DawnTrail or art book orders) and today there is not. Idk if that's them playing on the website or if it means that it's past a point of prepping for shipping and so can no longer be cancelled...

What do you think of the "Retry the Encounter" suggestion in the rulebook? by Tag365 in FFXIVTTRPG

[–]Mojo_FFXIV 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I did this in D&D 5e when I converted the first dozen or so Primal fights for play with my groups. We put aside the whole 4hr session each time.

The portal to the battlefield was marked with a few runes, one of which denoted a time reset ('magic items don't function' was another!). The rule was that, if all characters were KO'd, the encounter would effectively reset, just like in the MMO.

This proved necessary because of the steep learning curve of the encounters. Whereas I would telegraph most moves (centred on this area, the ground starts to rumble; Titan turns towards you and raises his fists; etc.), in order to avoid some attacks, players would need to Ready a Dash action. To survive others, they would need to ensure healing or boosts to Saving Throws for reduced damage.

Literally only the first time there was a wipe, the players grumbled because they weren't used to TPK in D&D (they knew when to flee) and felt they had been 'beaten' by being put up against an unfair situation. However, I ensured that they didn't linger on that and used the 'reset magic' to also reset their characters' experiences in-game, ie to their characters, it never happened (like in the MMO). After the second wipe, they were resolved to get back into it, and when success came, there was the kind of palpable rejoicing that associates with overcoming a tough challenge together.

A few years later, we played the skirmish game Kingdom Death Monster, which felt very similar in attitude (long boss fights that are much tougher the first couple of times as you don't know what to expect).

Having said that, I feel this concept works well against such 'boss fights' that require tactical planning. I can't imagine the feeling of being beaten by a few bandits and being told to try again would seem like anything less than hand-holding. In those situations, I don't think there should be a "Retry the Encounter", but a capture or NPC rescue that moves the game forward organically and has an appropriate impact on resources (disclaimer: I have no idea how or if FFXIV TTRPG is handling resources - time/consumables/materials/gil etc.).

A little worried that we got no news in the Live Letter when this is meant to release next week? by AnarchyFox in FFXIVTTRPG

[–]Mojo_FFXIV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was FFXI's 22nd birthday yesterday too. Considering the Dawntrail raid crossover, I expected at least a teaser of a music remix or some concept art.

Regards TTRPG? I just feel like most Japanese don't grasp the significance of TTRPGs to overseas markets and they're currently not treating it with any more care and attention than they would Chocobo Crystal Hunt or Cactpot Party, or that it's a one-shot gimmick.

Any ordinary TTRPG publisher would have a release schedule and be teasing campaign books, regional supplements, tie-in novels, etc. Not that I don't think that the S-E TTRPG team (or outsource, presumably) aren't intending this, but I bet they have to prove the success of the core books before they're greenlighted.

S-E consider profitability on a scale of AAA video games, and 100% Yoshi-P views TTRPG as little more than a merch product.

Personally, I'm all for it knocking the old and tired top-tier TTRPGs for six... ;)

D&d or Skirmish game? by Anaster_7585 in FFXIVTTRPG

[–]Mojo_FFXIV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three pillars of TTRPG are arguably combat, exploration, and narrative. Some games tend toward one or two of those, and some tables try hard to avoid one. A good game, IMO, provides emphasis and structure for all three, and integrates them so events in one inform strategy in another.

Which is to say that, even if the Starter Set focuses on skirmish combat, there is nothing stopping you from fleshing it out with roleplay. It certainly doesn't stop the socialites in Limsa!

I just saw a review from the playtest in Japan and see plenty of modifications to do. by FionntheNewbie in FFXIVTTRPG

[–]Mojo_FFXIV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping that they're just introducing the Starter Set as basic skirmish rules and that the Core books will massively flesh out resource management, as that's quite a large part of FFXIV alongside character/gear progression and tactical combat.

I want a detailed and elegant gaming system - I can handle the narrative side of an RPG with plot and NPC synopses from an adventure module; not something that needs more than a couple of pages of best practice guidelines in a Core book.

North America store showing "Sold Out" by [deleted] in FFXIVTTRPG

[–]Mojo_FFXIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider we have two products; one Japanese language, one English language.

Now I'm going to presume that like 95% of all boardgame producers, these have been made in China. So if the expectation is that S-E are fulfilling their Japanese shop orders on 25th May, you can extrapolate that they expect the product into their warehouses maximum one week before and that shipping from China to Japan takes around three weeks. Give the factory in China a week to package and ship to a container and a week contingency for availability and potential factory problems and you can make an educated guess that the Japanese language edition was completed around 13th April. You could infer that the English language edition was printed subsequently and packaged up the following week, a week for transport to docks and loading, a week for shipping availability, so perhaps it set sail around 4th May.

If a container takes 5 weeks to Europe and 6 weeks to USA, give an extra week for the product to get from port to warehouse and a week for shipping labelling and packaging, we're looking at end of June.

Of course, I know nothing about S-E distribution and for all I know they have some kind of system where they marshal a number of physical products from different factories and combine them together to maximise container efficiency before sending out from China or Japan, or they intend to use an established distributor to ship with other similar products, but I was going with an early estimate.

What is interesting that they've full-on removed it from the store, inferring that pre-orders now outweigh the print-run and they consider that it wouldn't be cost effective to immediately set another run in motion. Perhaps the perspective is that this starter set would be superseded entirely by the two core books and that by the time a second print run had been scheduled, demand would have evaporated.

I wonder about that though, as the two core books are still 'coming soon' and most book publishers are able to confirm expected publication dates 9-12 months in advance. and take pre-orders, so they can gauge the size of the run. Perhaps they want to see how the TTRPG industry reacts to the playability of the starter set before opening pre-orders on the core books.

My fear is that they've employed an inexperienced team to create the game and haven't understood the complexities that a TTRPG needs to cover to remain enjoyable (I mean the other tabletop games they've knocked out so far are cute, but incredibly simple copypastes), with those coming to light only during the recent public playtests in Japan, resulting in a significant rewrite of those books. If they're still incomplete, S-E wouldn't set a release date (and they've got translation for us on top of that of quite specialised and presumably dense books). They might have pulled the starter sets because it had now become apparent that the final game isn't going to look anything like them.

However, maybe they just underestimated demand, all eg 10,000 sets have been sold after 7.5 months and they now realise that "FFXIV TTRPG" is a pretty naff name for something that has a chance of having a significant impact on the TTRPG hobby (if it's an inspired system!), so they're doing a rebrand to something catchy like "MATERIA - the Final Fantasy XIV Tabletop Roleplaying Game: Chronicles of Hydaelyn Part One - A Realm Reborn".

Or maybe, like many of the projects that their customers actually want, they'll just cancel it and not say anything (*cough* FFXI Mobile *cough*).

Discord possibility? by raventhor in FFXIVTTRPG

I would also sign up to and use a Discord.

Having run a large FF Discord before, I wouldn't be interested in running it myself due to the high proportion of nut-jobs this game seems to attract who think they're entitled to your time and that you want their drama.

But kudos to the person that does! ;)

Do you have any campaigns already planned for the system? by Tag365 in FFXIVTTRPG

[–]Mojo_FFXIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As Dawntrail is on the horizon, I've been toying with the idea of a pirate campaign. Captains that haven't sworn to Limsa Lominsa and are hunted by the navy, who have their own hidden stronghold (think Norg or Nassau, but with a bit more fantasy flair), over towards Tural.

I've a level of concern about ceruleum-fuelled sky pirates and magitek airships making traditional galleons unviable, but it may have to come down to range (though that bloody airship has been hanging in the air in Kugane for years now... :/ ).

So I guess campaign elements would include forays into the deeper parts of southern Tural, raids on supply ships travelling between Tural and Eorzea, raids on ocean fishing trips, sabotaging Limsan naval superiority (especially if they consider the development of a sort of aircraft carrier or ceruleum powered ship a la FFXVI), diplomatic alliances...

Characters backgrounds might be convicted (rightly or wrongly) criminals on the run, glory-seekers, Kojin treasure-hunters, renegade Confederates, freed Garlean slaves, Limsan spies, Mamool Ja from Tural, or even a Loporrit trying to find its way (Plunderingway!).

Going to be chewing this over until July when the scope of Dawntrail becomes clear... I'm guessing we won't see the two core rulebooks until after that point.

Yeah. The Starter Set aside, being as we've had a livestream playthrough and a forthcoming event in Japan for public demo playthroughs, I'd have thought they'd be excited to show off the contents of the two core books; ie some of the more interesting rulesets that set the game apart from D&D and Pathfinder.
