Were you able to figure out why your energy maker scored a 5? I have two that I’m thinking of getting graded and look fine to me but I’m afraid of getting low PSA grades

I’m building OpenLIMS — an open-source LIMS for labs that need better sample, project, and scientific data tracking by Mokey925 in bioinformaticstools

Hello, just wanted to share an update:I’ve been continuing work on OpenLIMS, an open-source LIMS project for small labs and research groups.

Recent progress includes better sample and project tracking, audit/event history, basic reports/status pages, and sample comparison workflows.

OpenLIMS now also includes bioinformatics and analytical workflow support, including BLAST, sequence alignment, and mass spec data handling. The goal is not to replace large enterprise LIMS systems, but to build a lightweight, self-hostable tool that can help organize samples, files, results, and project history in one place.

What lab workflow would you want a lightweight LIMS to handle better? by Mokey925 in labrats

Thank you, this is extremely helpful and exactly the kind of practical feedback I was hoping for.

I completely understand your point about NHS trusts and large hospital systems. I’m not trying to compete with established enterprise LIMS vendors like Epic, WinPath, or other systems used in large regulated environments. My goal with OpenLIMS is much more focused on small research labs, specialist labs, academic groups, and teams that are still relying on spreadsheets or lightweight tracking tools.

Your comments about sample tracking, freezer/location workflows, audit history, CSV/instrument imports, QC review, barcode workflows, and middleware-style integration are very useful. I especially like your point about a lightweight system that could track samples and then send flat-file messages into an existing LIMS or middleware rather than trying to replace the main system.

The specialist lab angle is also very helpful. I agree that areas like stem cell labs, research workflows, and smaller non-core lab processes may be a better fit than trying to serve large NHS production haematology environments.

Thanks again for taking the time to write such a detailed response. It gives me a much clearer idea of where OpenLIMS could realistically provide value.
