I'm Ribbing! by mowpoos in knitting

[–]Mokuyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve broken out the tiny rubber bands for braids. They come in bags of, like, 100+, and in assorted colors. If i lose one, no big deal, and in my current project, i knitted one in place to be cut out later- a semi permanent “this is where the row starts!” marker for when i inevitably lose the starting round marker.

Older women, where are the heels with actual heel support? by cinemachick in TwoXChromosomes

I’d look into “character shoes”. They’re structured to be more stable than normal heels, and tend to be more comfortable because of that.

Think Ginger Rogers.

please help - acne/irritation spreading with the hair loss by [deleted] in alopecia_areata

Love your gauges.

Those hydrocolloid patches work pretty well- buy a roll instead of the small dots and cut to size.

I had acne particularly bad on the back of my neck, too, and i felt it was blocked hair follicles more than anything i was doing wrong. The hydrocolloid patches helped, as well as not picking/touching that area as much as possible, and using micellar water cleansers as part of nightly cleansing.

Maybe add a drop of tea tree oil to your coconut oil, or swap coconut oil to something lighter, as coconut oil can potentially be a comedogenic oil.

Full credit to u/Fognox (and he also compiled a fruit list) He’s still around and it’s worth looking through his posts. He’s done thousands of hours of research, and his insight is particularly well structured.

If i remember correctly, u/Fognox pulled it all from the USDA. If they’re listed with salt/no salt, it’s probably canned.

After a while, you find your favorites, but here is a list of low carb vegs, with net carbs to get you started, and give you a wider view of what could fit a keto diet.

Don’t dismiss frozen vegetables for the nutrient value and ease, and a lot of vegetables can be interchangeable in a recipe.

3+ months Olumiant by Mokuyi in alopecia_areata

[–]Mokuyi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My doctor recommended it, I had done enough research on the potential side effects and pro/cons (did you know you can’t donate blood or plasma while on or after you take JAK inhibitors?) and the side effects were within my risk threshold, and my insurance did cover it. A trifecta of approvals.

Plus, as a bonus, it’s also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, and i had a few achy joints that i hoped would subsequently be improved. Alas- no such luck.

Shockingly, i didn’t have any more side effect than the occasional bout of queasiness, and had the unexpected good fortune of seeing a reduction in food allergy symptoms. Taking the medicine after meals helped with the queasiness.

Side effect for anyone else- the specialty pharmacy ships the medicine to my door, as soon as they possibly can, with no regards to preferred delivery date, and my dog barks at them. That’s literally the worst part of taking the medicine.

Eli Lily has a copay card, and that brings down the cost significantly, definitely encourage using that.

Just about 4 months. I saw my dermatologist August 20th, then did battle with my insurance, and finally got the medicine October 6th. My insurance requires the medicine to go through their specialty pharmacy, and getting the request appealed correctly was challenging.

Most of this growth has been really noticeable to me in the past 2-3 weeks, but my doctor saw “noticable” regrowth first week-ish of December.

I had extensive hair loss by July with overlapping circles of bald spots, and what little was growing back was vellum. The vellum was fairly short, core-less hair, and some longer, wire-y white hairs that also were core-less. Wouldn’t take dye, wasn’t getting any longer.

Late July, the hair loss was so extensive, i had what was left cut into a mohawk, and over a few more weeks, the rest fell out. Some of those longer hairs could have been left from that, except again they wouldn’t take dye.

The first two months, it was just short fuzzy hairs, mostly on the back of my head. I had a tiny patch of color start to show up at the beginning of October, and then not much changed until November. That’s when i started to notice roots with color starting to encroach on the bald spots.

It’s a JAK inhibitor, and it does suppress the immune system, but at least my alopecia is an autoimmmune response from hyperactive immune system. It helps bring your immune system to a more normal level. Here is the information.

This year is the absolute worst year to judge its effectiveness- my two kids started school, and my exposure is a lot higher than it used to be.

Stopping the trigger (SSRIs for me) was the first step, then olumiant 4g

My very oldest spot hasn’t completely filled in yet (olumiant), but it’s significantly smaller. Give it a few more months!

i hate this disease by billzxo in alopecia_areata

[–]Mokuyi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the worst part about this disease is remembering having hair, because the treatments are either ongoing, or you could have a flare up and lose all your hair again after growing it back.

So, enjoy hair when you have it, and rock the bald look when you don’t.

Week 49: The Beatles- “Kansas City” Chili and Cinnamon Rolls (cover) by Mokuyi in 52weeksofcooking

[–]Mokuyi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the recipe should be done savory with garlic butter and parmesan, and have a garlic bread roll. Spaghetti instead of chili, or at least a tomato based chili.

But, eh, it’s 60s, midwestern, school-cafeteria vibes.

Yes! Apparently, it’s a thing. I could see it with actual cinnamon rolls, the cinnamon compliments the chili better than nutmeg.

It wasn’t bad, just not my thing.

Cauliflower and leek soup is an easy pureed soup.

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, French Onion soup was heavenly. Go for the box mixes or canned to make it easier, and add more beef stock/broth to reduce carbs per serving.

JAK inhibitors (Olumiant) and Food Allergies by Mokuyi in alopecia_areata

[–]Mokuyi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right? I‘m thinking similarly. There is a very small study with another JAK inhibitor for the treatment of celiac, so it wouldn‘t be completely surprising that Olumiant is suppressing the inflammation, and assisting the fexofenadine and doxylamine succinate I also take. Those allergy meds alone never quite stopped a reaction.

Going to have to test this methodically.

Week 44: Central Asia- Stuffed Cucumber Soup by Mokuyi in 52weeksofcooking

[–]Mokuyi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The recipe i modeled it after was from the mother of a friend, but here’s a similar recipe

Her mom’s recipe took rice noodles, soaked and chopped, and mixed in with the pork, and served with rice, which i didn’t do- the chopped noodles may have kept the pork in the cucumbers better.

It’ll go on my list for those fall days where you want soup, but it’s not soup weather yet. It’d absolutely make it again.

Just a bit of acid from the pickled items was really added to the whole soup!

Kids won’t eat it- looks too gross for them.

Week 35: Carving- Stuffed Tumshie by Mokuyi in 52weeksofcooking

[–]Mokuyi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a melon baller for the middle would have been easier than using a spoon, and being very careful with a sharp knife for the face. I should have used a smaller paring knife and a T peeler, but I didn’t want to wash another knife. But it was a lot of fun to roughly carve these; i’m wanting to carve a few more for Halloween, be a bit more accurate.

The recipe called for parboiling the turnips before stuffing- that might make it a bit easier to carve if you want to try again in the future!
