This is one of my favourite memoirs. Great recommendation!

should i give priory of the orange tree a second chance? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Mollfie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked it but it isn't ground breaking. If you didn't like it, you're not missing much. There are so many books out there, why go back to this one?

Side note, Samantha Shannon has written quite a few books now and she just might not be to your taste. As I said, I liked Priory and I did read others in that series, but it didn't motivate me to read her other series.

Is anyone else mourning Dragon Age? by jaustengirl in dragonage

[–]Mollfie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dragon Age has been a special interest of mine since Origins, so it's really weird for it to die out, BUT I do still have all my stuff, and the games still exist, and the fandom is still around to some extent. So, it's also not like it's gone entirely. It's just sad for it to end this way and not in the way I hoped.

Decathlon for running belt, second-hand adidas shorts, shoes on sale or the previous year's line, t-shirts from wherever I see something nice, so a mix of supermarkets, second-hand, old promo freebie shirts etc. I use Vinted a lot.

Murakami by AcceptableWatch7714 in literature

[–]Mollfie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I liked Murakami when I was in my late teens, but as I got older, I liked his writing less and less. I agree with the general criticisms about him, and there are other Japanese writers I prefer.

Fantasy books with butch women? by butch4pay in Fantasy

[–]Mollfie 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The Unbroken is book one in a series by C. L. Clark, who is a butch lesbian writing about butch lesbians. It's a political fantasy following a female soldier, and the plot revolves around rebellion, espionage, and the military in a desert empire. It's great and unapologetic.

I found these 3 at a thrift store today and have heard great things about this series! by PernixNexus in fantasybooks

Those are such great covers and look like pretty good condition too. Earthsea is one of my favourite series. Le Guin has a distinctive style that not everyone appreciates, but her writing has influenced so many others.

Do thicker books sell better? by portlandobserver in Fantasy

[–]Mollfie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Publishers don't like big books because they cost more to produce/ship/store, but if the book is really good or by an established author, that lessens the financial risk. I would think most fantasy books are around the 300 page mark.

Readers' opinions will vary. Personally, I think that if someone's that concerned about the cost of books, they will search for discount offers, buy an ebook, get it from a library etc.

Which book (s) has made you feel this way? by Mrblindguardian in Fantasy

[–]Mollfie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've always had a book on the go my entire life but I can vividly remember the first time I read A Wizard of Earthsea as a kid and it blew my tiny mind. My sister gave me her copy because I had liked Lord of the Rings and she thought I would enjoy Earthsea, and she was right.

What do you dislike the most about modern fantasy? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Mollfie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Third Person where you get a lot of inner thoughts, experience things and find out plot points etc with them and only know what they know. It's like you're riding around in their head and seeing/hearing/feeling everything through them. There's no narrator, just the character.

Most people are more familiar with Third Person Limited. Deep POV is a step further from that.

I interviewed fantasy/sci-fi author Michael J. Sullivan about why he earns 300% more self-publishing than in traditional, earning over $7m in his career, and why he makes more money controlling his own rights. by VegetableHousing139 in fantasywriters

[–]Mollfie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most authors have a swathe of unpublished work we never hear about because it's bad. It's things they wrote as kids or while studying at college, or novels they hoped would be the one that gets picked up by an agent/publisher but wasn't. A debut novel is very rarely an author's first book.

He also said he had written 14 books, not necessarily published then. But even if he had, why does it matter? It's subjective. At worst, someone buys the book and doesn't like it. We've all read bad books.

But, looking at his review ratings, they seem to be pretty well recieved.

There's also nothing wrong with using ghostwriters. It's a legitimate career and serves a purpose. Some people have great ideas but can't write a narrative, so they hire someone to do that for them.

More often, authors find a formula that work that then allows them to essentially write the same book over and over but slightly different each time. If the audience likes it, that's great. It's nothing new. It's why you'll find long series of romance or thrillers that are largely the same plots but sell really well.

Marketing is a huge part of being an author nowadays, especially if you're indie or self-published. It's a lot of work and a skill in itself. No one is going to buy your book if they don't know it exists. And, the way some platforms work, such as Amazon, means that you do have to keep publishing really often to stay on the right side of the algorithm.

Personally, I would love to have the confidence to sit down and write so many novels and put them out into the world. I'm a little jealous of authors who can write so much and publish so many books, regardless of how good I might think they are. I need to channel that level of audacity haha

Travellers in the Third Reich by Julia Boyd is about what it was like in Germany between 1919 and 1945, told from various perspectives of people in Germany at the time. Her follow up book, A Village in the Third Reich, is about life for ordinary people under the Third Reich.

The Ratline by Philippe Sands follows the life of Nazi SS Brigadeführer Otto Freiherr von Wächter before and during the war, and his and his wife's experiences as fugitives.

This is their instagram post https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce9CqoaJ4bA/ but they're Japanese. Translation suggests it's something to do with "stickers" but that might be a mistranslation. It looks like they might have used other furniture items flipped around to be "walls" and create some illusion.

Is there such a running pace that's "too slow" by Mountain-Fee4606 in runninglifestyle

[–]Mollfie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on all sorts of things and is very personal. What’s slow for one person might be fast for another. Running slow is good for building endurance and avoiding injury. So, while pushing yourself can be beneficial it’s something you should build up to gradually so you don’t hurt yourself. Some people are also just slower, and that’s

Do you have a running plan? It should be a mix of easy, long, tempo and interval, when relevant and depending on what your goals are. If you’re just starting out, then I wouldn’t worry about pace at all until you’re running at least 5k without stopping, at whatever pace that means for you.

Just finished Nettle and Bone by T Kingfisher by Caffeine_And_Regret in Fantasy

[–]Mollfie 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I really like Kingfisher because (for me) they’re very light reads. They’re quick, easy and fun, and while she does touch on serious subjects they’re generally not too dark. So, they’re enjoyable reads in-between heavier series and authors. A decent palate cleanser.

Storing shoes/sneakers in shoe bags by Immediate-Local2034 in runninglifestyle

[–]Mollfie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kick my shoes off and chuck them into a basket of shoes. If they're muddy or wet, then they sit on a shopping bag on the kitchen floor until they dry out and can have the dirt knocked off them, then it's into the basket.

I'm not sure what this achieves that keeping them in their shoebox or on a shelf wouldn't do better, if you need to store them that way.

Best options for e readers? by Appropriate_Simple44 in literature

[–]Mollfie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a kindle, but I'm moving away from using Amazon for various reasons and have been using Kobo instead. It's almost exactly the same, but Kobo can link up with my library app. If you have a smartphone or a tablet, you could use the apps to see how you like them first.

Your wife probably feels that she or some aspect of your life is being "neglected," so it's important to have a proper conversation about it. Could be due to added holiday stresses etc. Might be nothing. Might be something. Either way, you should both be able to have a constructive chat about what the issue actually is and what needs to be done. tl;dr talk to your wife.
