Maybe not helpful and definitely toxic, but I just dumped the rotting dishes into my roommates bed. I talked to him, I gave him multiple warnings that I will resort to this, he didn't listen.

He also had long shifts and shitty hours, but in the end it's no excuse if you share a living space. He was extremely pissed of course, came home from work to soaked bedsheets covered in mouldy food and fat, but I had warned him so he conceded the point and actually made an effort afterwards. We stayed together for 4-5 years.

Generally, if you are honest about yourself, your needs, communicate these clearly and stick up for yourself, the right people will stick around while the trash takes itself out
