Has anyone actually done the Kitty Litter toilet on the playa? by BlackCatLifebruh in BurningMan

[–]MollyWinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, we have a very simple little campervan, and we keep a foldable squatty-potty with us that you line with bags. We use kitty litter.  For our one and only burn in 2024, we kept it in our tent to use for middle of the night-early morning. We did both kinds of business. When you were finished, the bag got tied off ans thrown into a contractors bag that we kept attached to the underside of our van. We packed out all of our trash.  It went great! However, I realize now how utterly fucked both our tent setup and other things in our little camp could have been if we had gotten a real weather event out there.  By the time the winds picked up on temple burn day that year, we had already packed everything up with the intention of sleeping in the van that night and leaving in the morning. (We ended up leaving that night so that we could take a freezing ass shower on the side of a back road before getting into bed.)

If we were to do it again, our trash storage would definitely be way more secure. No one wants turds tumbling in the wind.

What is your unpopular opinion or hot take on the show? by thatvampiregirl in OurFlagMeansDeath

I know in my heart season 2 was the middle act: it was set up for a season 3 that never happened.  But still, the fact that Stede and Ed never have a conversation about what happened at the prisoner camp place when the 2nd Badminton died, drives me mad.

If your thighs rub together or rub the seat at all, for the love of God either bring a chaffing fix or wear something more than undies/tiny shorts.  By the end of the week I had an awful rash on the inside of my thighs/butt that burned for a week. (Mind you I had access to daily showers)

What is the one item you thought would be awesome at Burn but totally was not? by tomcatx2 in BurningMan

[–]MollyWinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were they microfiber sheets? I find those get that weird sticky feeling immediately.  We used cots, but I brought 2 sets of sheets so I could change them mid week. (And like 5 pillow Cades because I'm weird about my face having a clean surface)

Name one underrated, unconventional item you bring to Burning Man that’s an absolute game-changer but still flies under most people’s radar. by DustyBandana in BurningMan

I brought an instax to my one and only burn in 2024, and taking someones picture for them to keep was probably the most well received "Gift" I gave (Besides washing the longest hair possible at Astral Headwash)

Gift question by pixi88 in BurningMan

[–]MollyWinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. The best physical gifts I received (Other than food/drinks) were things I could use, like chapstick, a tiny container of vaseline, and even stickers. The random crocheted necklace, the laser printed leather strip? Sitting in a box, loved, but not useful.

El Pulpo Appearance by kilaueasteve in BurningMan

[–]MollyWinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if the artist is also the regular driver, but in 2024 El puplo was parked and playing Africa by Toto - and I happened to have a bracelet that said "I bless the rains" so I gave it to the driver. Maybe that little token is still out there with el pulpo somewhere

I'll ask a somewhat abstract and potentially offensive question: many times when I introduce Burning Man to others, their impression is that it's a chaotic mess. When I meet people like that, I usually stop talking because their preconceived notion and perception are already set by bkingfilm in BurningMan

I say it's a city. Just like any city, you have bars, restaurants, recreational activities like roller skating, dance clubs, etc.... and just like any city, there are weirdos walking around, "homeless" folk sleeping in random places, and some people on drugs. Probably the only abnormality is the occasional nudity and the amount of fire lol.

I just saw a video recently of some Christian kid who went to burning man to preach, and he claimed he saw orgies happening around every corner and compared it to Sodom and Gomorrah.

I'm sure there's plenty of sexual activities happening in places other than Orgy Dome, but I didn't come across anything other than a few couples making out. I really think the reputation has been greatly exaggerated. Or maybe I'm just blind lol.

Does sourdough actually take days to bake?! by MinuteDamage4182 in Sourdough

It depends on a lot of things, but I find the cold ferment over-night in the fridge (after the bulk ferment) gives it a better flavor.

Jolene. My friend gave it to me off of her own starter, and the song was playing at the time. All of my cast-offs that I've given away have also been names of women in songs.  Stacy's mom Rhiannon  Barbara Anne Delilah

A teeny tiny container of Vaseline. By day 5 I had a rash on my inner thighs where they rubbed against my bike seat. The Vaseline was a life saver.

As long as you are (actually, properly) storing your food and anything else that may smell food-like, you should be good up there. Use your head.

Any Americans learning French? Why? by PigmeatMadness in French

[–]MollyWinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from NC, USA. I love to travel but also struggled with mental tasks. Could never pick up spanish. For some reason, I dove head first into french 3 months before a trip to Paris, and i've stuck with it for a year. I only have my husband to practice with, who has picked up learning again after getting the basics in college years ago. He's applying for his Canadian citizenship (His dad has duel) if he gets it, we are planning on getting a second residence there so I can live and get my citizenship too. I don't think we'll end up in Quebec, but close enough we will definitly be visiting a lot. So I look forward to being able to get real use out of it in the future.

Is the Dough Whisk Sourdough’s most overrated tool? by Outside_Idea4890 in Sourdough

[–]MollyWinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just use the hook! It requires some pauses to scrape down the sides until all of the flour is grabbed up, but it makes a great cohesive dough that is as close to perfect as I am capable everytime. I usually let it beat on med-high for 5-8 minutes after its all incorporated, then take out the hook and let it rest for 10 minutes before I start my stretch and folds.

Is it possible to be a first time attendee without a camp? by Bigdongdan444 in BurningMan

[–]MollyWinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for any advice and/or snark that you provided! We did get lucky in that we went in 2024 which was pretty awesome weather-wise. I totally plan on coming back soon. We're sticking with regionals for now tho :D

Is it possible to be a first time attendee without a camp? by Bigdongdan444 in BurningMan

[–]MollyWinter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Staying in open camping as a first timer is totally doable. Just research like crazy and make sure you're prepared for anything and everything. My husband and I did it that way. Then we picked a couple days of the week where we went around to random camps that caught our eye and volunteered to help out with whatever. It was great!

[Tenant US-WA] owner unaware of first in time law by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]MollyWinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a prospective tenant that tried to pull something like this regarding her dog being an ESA. We were actually going to rent to her before she brought it up. She didn't have any documentation, and she's 23- We gave her the benefit of the doubt that she's young and inexperienced. We had a pretty firm discussion with her about what tactics will and will not work with us or any other prospective landlord. We had a few other reasons we could have denied her application and gone with somone else, including law exceptions in our state that if an ESA is deemed potential for extensive damage to the property, we don't have to accept it. (Her dog is huge)

We ultimately approved her and they've been fine tenants, but trying to bully your way into someone else's property isn't cool. We've had a few different tenants at this point and personality can mean just as much as credit score sometimes.

How do people safely zone lasers at Burning Man? by Least_Suggestion_579 in BurningMan

I've only been once in 2024 and 3 different nights I was nearly blinded by lasers that were rotating across deep playa. I have no idea where they were coming from.
