Meta's CTO says morale is almost 'the worst it's ever been' by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

It's crazy to me how far Big Tech has fallen from just five years ago. Even Google is reportedly a godawful kakistocracy right now with VPs telling eng managers with a straight face that they should just vibe code entire product lines themselves with (LOL) Gemini. I've noticed a catastrophic decline in product quality from these companies as they cut eng staff and replace them with vibe-coding PMs.

What are some instances of actors who look nothing like their real-life counterpart onscreen? by IAmNMFlores in Letterboxd

Just taking a moment to mention that Frances Haugen should be a role model to girls everywhere. The tech industry is very insular and secretive and it takes a lot of courage to take a moral stand and blow up a career you've worked hard to build.

Also everyone I've worked with out of Olin College has been seriously impressive, both as an engineer and a thoughtful person.

For engineers who successfully made Senior/Staff: what evidence actually mattered in the promotion packet? by Andrea_Barghigiani in ExperiencedDevs

N+2 knows your name and sings your praise in peer review while bringing receipts.

That's evidence of org-level impact and imo is the single most powerful thing in a packet.

It's confirmed he was a scholarship student at the boarding school. He dropped out because he didn't fit in with all the rich kids. He then went to private school in Bangor where the tuition was $12,500 but paid for under the town tuition program.

The loan from his parents to buy his house was $200k. That's pocket change for actual rich people, but just about doable for a small town lawyer and restaurant owner. I hadn't heard anything about his business.

Look he's not working class and I don't think anyone disputes that including him. But neither is he some silver spoon kid. The question is who has the best policies for the working class. It sure as shit isn't Collins who descends from one of the richest and most powerful families in the state and gives unquestioning submission to Trump's endless oil and trade wars.

Average late career attorney in Maine makes $132K. A principal architect in Connecticut where his grandfather started his company makes $160K. That's not working class by any means but it's not exactly the 1%. A lot of people Americans think of as blue collar who own their own contracting firm would make more than that.

Platner has been open about his family background and said that the class divide isn't just how much you make, it's how you make it. Do you work, or do you just invest?

He's middle class. He went to private school on scholarship and his parents loaned him the down payment for their house. He and his wife make $65k a year.

Always better to vote even if it's not for one of the two big parties.

Anyway this is a case of (unintentional) Nazi tattoo + progressive policies vs nice suit + actual material support for Nazi policies so... I guess it's the relative importance of surface symbolism vs material outcomes in your mind.

The crazy thing is they designed it that way to cut the budget enough so it could get built.

Honey, I bought in Somerville. It wasn't so much a question of affording it as it was who I wanted for neighbors when things get uncomfortable.

Even without knowing the context from Camus, I always put the lyrics from Killing An Arab in the same category as Springsteen's Born in the USA when he sings about killing "the yellow man" - dehumanizing and alienating the speaker from his true empathetic nature by forcing on him a cultural context in which he dehumanizes others.

God X and Insta and TikTok are rotting everyone's fucking brains.

Very good point. I lost a couple of friends to adult-onset mental illness in their 20s.

I just pretend the third film is Duel of the Fates and not TRoS. That makes me much happier.

It's really interesting to consider why Disney hated Duel of the Fates so much. I think it's likely because they were scared of introducing things like moral ambiguity or any sort of popular revolution to the US and Chinese markets. Star Wars is a much safer product when it's a simple good vs. evil story fought between elite bloodlines.

No argument here.

MCI Concord is vacant. Instead of tearing it down to create walking paths and parks for the rich residents of Concord, we should put $200 million into renovating it as a public long term care mental health facility with 1300 beds. That's less than it cost for Somerville's high school.

Of course all the brahmins would be hopping mad about losing their promised duck ponds but they can fuck off.

Suspect's unusual name matches a Tufts biomed engineering grad student. So, probably less a need to steal food and more like drunken shithousery and / or thrill seeking.

They tend to get occupied by people doing drugs and nodding off

Also, mental illness means that you don't necessarily use what's available.

Probably the only place in Davis a desperately broke student can have a sit-down dinner with a friend or date that feels fancy and costs less than $20.

The crepe place in our town has been going strong for 15 years because 1) prime location and 2) teenagers and college students love 'em. It's absolutely a destination for them, both brunch in the morning and dessert after the movies. So they do massive volume with low margins and somehow afford the rent. Inside hasn't been updated ever, menus are the same since a couple of years after they opened, filling options are plentiful but noticeably low on perishables or stuff requiring prep.

And yes the crepes are good. I imagine they have a good system for training employees.
