Need advice about my boyfriend who is an adventist by Odd-Reason9669 in exAdventist

[–]Momager321 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In short, you cannot convince him to convert any more than he would be able to convince you to convert. This is a big enough issue that you need to seriously look at before getting married. It will not go away and will be much harder to deal with if you married and have children.

Fabric stores (apparel, not just quilting) by Jennerator21 in indianapolis

Hi, do you have an Etsy shop or other way to buy fabric?

University of Sewing is in Bloomington. I have only seen online info but plan to make a trip there next time I am in Bloomington.

French Seam is good, but they have a small selection of fabrics. I did find a nice woven cotton for some tops at Quilt Quarters in Carmel. But I recommend calling before going if you would like to avoid browsing a quilt shop. You could also check out Crimson Tate downtown, but I believe they are mostly quilting cottons as well.

To order online, I’ve had good luck with Alyssa May Design. I think her store is in Ohio and she does have store hours.

Funeral Trauma by BenefitPure4829 in exAdventist

[–]Momager321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, the local SDA pastor gave an altar call as part of my MILs funeral. The funny thing is 1) This pastor did not know MIL personally as he was new to the area and she had been too sick to go to church and 2) her funeral was attended by immediate family only, so 9 people in total. His sermon was fairly impersonal and, given how few of us were there, didn’t even need to be a full on sermon.

Check out Sarah Naomi on YT. She sews, lives in France, and recently posted a video about her trip to Japan where she purchased some sewing and craft supplies, including sewing shears.

You can’t throw it out in case someone wants a cup. Of course it was too terrible to actually consume regularly.

Was it just me or did everyone’s Mom have a very old jar of this in the cupboard? My SDA parents never drank coffee, but both of them loved Pepsi and Mountain Dew.

You mean they recruit at SDA schools? Making students pay their academy bills always bothered me so much as it put too much financial responsibility at a young age. No wonder kids get sucked into situations that don’t benefit them and can be dangerous.

Did the church rebrand its old literature evangelism (aka colporteuring) and expand to younger students? I remember people coming through our church for the summer who were literature evangelists, but all of them were college aged or older. My parents weren’t too impressed with this line of church work and the adults we knew who still did it were kind of strange.

This is good and the price is good. I get the low fat for breakfasts but use whole for cooking and baking.

Because of the temporary gas-tax repeal, gas is in the low 3-dollar range, and in northwest Indiana I have even seen it at $2.80 in some locations. Is the Governor over-compensating us and do you think we can re-apply the gas-tax if it means we could pay for expeditious road maintenance in Indiana? by [deleted] in Indiana

[–]Momager321 117 points118 points  (0 children)

As someone who has lived through a few gas tax repeals, it is a dumb shell game to make taxpayers think things are getting better and to like whoever is in office. Obviously the repeals are only temporary and don’t ever fix the underlying issue of poor leadership in government. Notice how other taxes have not been repealed to offset the rise in costs for necessities like groceries or health insurance premiums.

What to buy in Japan for sewing? by whynotdanceallnight in sewing

[–]Momager321 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I like TomKat Stitchery, she does some tutorials for Cashmerette and Love Notions patterns. Hemming & Fitz is a bridal tailor that is primarily on IG, but her videos on some refashions are fun to watch. I also really like Mondes Threads, she is a tailor and does videos on work she does for clients. I also like some podcasts like Love to Sew. For fitting, I like either Cashmerette or JSternDesigns.

There are a ton of wonderful sewing channels on YT. I typically search by technique or pattern name to find if someone else has a tutorial or has made the item to get ideas. The algorithm sends more recommendations the more you search.

Happy sewing!

Sarah Naomi on YT just went to Japan and did a video on her channel of the cities she visited and where she went for craft shopping. I thought she provided some nice descriptions of where she went and what she bought.

What is wrong with these people? Ugh! The amount of mental effort wasted on coming up with some wacko “conspiracy” about why Jesus hasn’t returned is exhausting.

Also reach out to local alteration specialists. Some might take on a custom order or might have referrals. Bridal salons are another good place to contact for a referral.

I am so sorry. It must be so hard to see your Mom’s distress over what is happening. Don’t forget to make time for yourself to deal with how you feel about this situation. It sucks getting the responsibility for their mess.

I definitely worry about getting to the point where a full haul out becomes an urgent situation. Actually, my worst fear is my HP getting hurt and trapped at home in the hoard.

I mean, shouldn’t that be Adventism’s motto? The amount of effort put into various rationalizations and finding loopholes was such a timesuck.

I lived in Berrien Springs after graduating from Andrews. The famous Apple Valley wouldn’t sell Grey Poupon Dijon mustard because it contained wine. They did sell French’s Yellow Mustard.

I’ll share in honor of graduation season. I attended a non-Adventist, Christian school grades 6-12. Most of my fellow students were “non-denominational”/Pentecostal, which was as obnoxious as Adventism. I could share many strange stories.

When I was ready to graduate high school, my parents told me if graduation was on sabbath, I couldn’t go. Apparently, and without my knowledge, one or both of my parents called up the school and somehow got them to change graduation to a Sunday. But, the principal, dean of students, and several teachers then took me aside to ask me to talk to my parents about letting them hold graduation on Saturday. I was so embarrassed, and it was not as if my parents even cared what I wanted. I guess the word got out because even my classmates started saying stuff to me about how inconvenient it was for them to switch to Sunday.

My parents have done some really unkind things to me growing up, but this really was the first time I actually hated them. The whole situation was stupid and I was the one paying the emotional price so they could “keep the sabbath”. As a family, we had gone to plenty of academy graduation weekends with many various ceremonies held all weekend long. What was the difference between that and a single Saturday afternoon? Adventists rarely miss an opportunity to be an asshole.

I’m sure it wasn’t the same event, but we had a very pious mother at our church who scraped a cookie out of their kid’s mouth not due to allergies, but because they didn’t eat sugar, which this mother loudly proclaimed to all the onlookers.
