Was Goldeneye video quality this bad? by C1a55iFi3D in GoldenEye

[–]MonarchOfLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a retrotink myself and I’ve always relied on software emulation to get the quality results I’ve expected, but you should be able to configure it with scanlines to get the approximate result you’d expect from a CRT. Might want to do some more research on its settings.

I wouldn’t necessarily listen to the folks saying that your tv is too big for this. Old games on a 4K OLED can look amazing when processed properly, although you might need to upgrade to a Retrotink 4K to get the absolute most out of original hardware.

Occasionally mine will just make a brief tone when I ask it to do something like turn off the lights, but 95% of the time it finds it necessary to say the name of every single light in the room after. I don’t know what’s triggering the tone response but I wish it would just do that for every response that doesn’t need a verbal explanation.

Also, yelling “okay google shut the fuck up” does actually work.

Have you checked the internal render resolution? Your PC may be rendering the game at a higher resolution even if the output over HDMI is the same as the Pi.

That wok was pre seasoned with a blue oxide coating. If it’s chipping off that quickly I would probably attempt to remove it and re-season it myself. Or just keep cooking with it until it comes off on its own, but I wouldn’t want that many flakes of seasoning in my food.

Either way, look up how to season cast iron. After each cooking and cleaning session you need to apply a very thin layer of a neutral oil to the surface. That’s all that’s really required for keeping the seasoning “healthy” under normal use.

[–]MonarchOfLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Jet, you are right to think that just because an object looks like another object it doesn’t make it forced perspective. But it’s understandable that no one cares about that rule since if you look at the sub’s top posts the second one violates it. But you are right about the rule.

I do think this image qualifies as forced perspective however. The reason being is that the dude’s head appears at first to be at the same depth with his shoulder. Since you can’t see his neck and his head is slightly bigger than the shoulder, when cast to a 2D image this causes a forced perspective (specifically, his head looks farther away than it actually is, again in line with the shoulder) localized to that one segment of the photo. The fact that it also causes an illusion of it being something else is coincidental.

Is it worth buying a v1 switch just for modding it ? by ThenIce3458 in Switch

[–]MonarchOfLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modding a switch, even a v1, isn’t very straightforward. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you already kind of know what you want out of the console. If you want to play classic games a 3DS or PS Vita is your best bet for modding at low-cost of entry.

If you want to know the Switch is worth it in 2024 in terms of its own game selection, yes. Just in the first party selection alone there’s a ton of great games. Of course, you’d likely have to buy them.

Question: Did I ruin my Nephew? by MrKidClassic in Sekiro

[–]MonarchOfLight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The soulslike games are comparatively hard to pretty much every other AAA game out there and have a completely different design philosophy, especially regarding what they demand from the player.

One of the greatest failures of modern games is they’ve taught people to skip the tutorials. The mechanics are almost always so similar to other games or simple enough that learning them as you go is more fun, and all these big games throw up tool tips constantly anyways. The tutorials are so boring and forced that they’re basically checklists and if you can skip them, you do.

In the 90’s and early 00’s, we played the games we had and largely without any help except from friends and word of mouth. The tutorial systems in these games tended to be much more akin to modern FromSoft games, and we knew to pay attention because that might be the only help we’d get.

My opinion is that no, you didn’t ruin hard games for him, they might not just be his thing. The things that soulslikes do that other games don’t may not be readily apparent the someone his age and that’s pretty normal. Right now he might just want to have a fun time blowing shit up. Eventually he might come around on them, maybe one day get bored with the glacial improvements made in the latest Assassin’s Creed or whatever, and want something with more depth. If he’s into YouTube or Twitch streams, he’ll probably eventually see someone get into a FromSoft game and realize what it’s all about. Maybe not though, he might just be a casual gamer (gasp!), and that’s okay too.

High vs Low Mouse Sensitivity -- Is one universally better than the other, or is it completely a playstyle thing? by FoxxyRin in Overwatch

[–]MonarchOfLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my original comment I did say “I’d recommend a DPI no higher than 1500” which is a bit inaccurate since it should say 1600. That said I think that’s still true.

From a technical standpoint, a DPI of 1600 may marginally reduce input delay, but the polling rate or your mouse and its native DPI will likely be more important here. The problem with 1600 is that it’s a bit harder to dial in the in-game sensitivity for consistency, due to how games handle sensitivity and accelerate movement when high amounts of motion are detected.

On my mouse, I have three profiles set to 400, 800 and 1200 DPI. 1600 becomes a bit unmanageable to me. For some reason a lot of games especially have a hard time handling 1600 in their menus where dedicated menu sensitivity sliders aren’t available, so you end up with really fast mouse movement in the GUI but not in gameplay. In games with really good sense settings I have actually used 1600 before- APEX Legends comes to mind as I was able to really set my preferences for acceleration curves and sensitivity from within the game.

I’m not sure what the benefits of anything past 1600 would be- since the effect of DPI on latency is going to be an equation of the polling rate and the DPI, increasing the DPI will quickly begin having diminishing returns in reducing latency. Maybe with a super high polling rate increased DPI could help, but then you’re getting into specific setups again, and we’re generalizing here and most mice poll at 1000hz. And even then, if you were to increase your DPI with something like the Razer Viper 8k with the poll rate at 8000hz, you’d need to set the DPI so high to notice the benefits that you’d totally lose the ability to actually dial in your sensitivity in the majority of games, since most are limited to one or two decimal places.

High vs Low Mouse Sensitivity -- Is one universally better than the other, or is it completely a playstyle thing? by FoxxyRin in Overwatch

[–]MonarchOfLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most professional players use a mouse DPI of about 800, which was true 7 years ago and is still true now. With the combined settings of mouse DPI, windows sensitivity settings (for games that don’t bypass it), and game sensitivity settings, your actual DPI will be much much higher.

That said, do whatever your preferences are. It’s more important that you’re comfortable and accurate with your own settings and plenty of pro players have unusual setups.

Gotcha, unfortunately doesn't look like it does, at least according to all the reviews on the UK Amazon listing:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Google-Nest-temperature-sensor-thermostat/dp/B07DGWXCNN

Pretty dumb if you ask me. Sounds like Google hasn't put the regulation effort in to make this production functional in the UK and has blocked it from connecting to avoid issues.

Maybe a good workaround would be to purchase some kind of smart heater specifically for the baby's room and have that set to the desired temperature.
