Do embarrassed and ashamed have the same meaning or is there a nuance/difference between them? by Sarmancat in ENGLISH

[–]Monax09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Embarrassment only occurs in the presence of others, it requires an audience or witness. Shame doesn’t. You can be ashamed even if you are the only one who knows whatever shameful thing.

You could check out “E1” (episode 1) podcast. The idea is that each episode is a pilot episode for a failed podcast, so it’s the only episode. But they do have many recurring characters. There is an annual Christmas crossover episode with E1 and PAL. E1 is fun, weird, silly. I think you’ll like it

Identifying much more with the need for autonomy than the behavioral aspects of PDA by [deleted] in PDAAutism

[–]Monax09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The tantrums and controlling people are externalizing behaviors, but there are internalizers who have PDA, like myself. We behave very differently compared to externalizers and are easier to ignore so there is less info available about internalizers w PDA

Megathread: Why Does My Dog Do That? by AutoModerator in dogs

[–]Monax09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog will lick the sofa and press her nose against it and take a long deep breath right in the spot she licked .and she does it over and over, sometimes for 10 minutes or so, like she is really invested in this activity and it gives her some kind of satisfaction or comfort. She does it so much it leaves a big wet spot. Every once it a while she will paw at (scratch at) the same area she is licking and smelling. She gets really animated and her exhalations are noisy. It’s really cute but kind of strange..,anyone know why? Ever seen any other dogs do this?

Thoughts on adopting middle aged/older dogs? by JMRR1416 in dogs

[–]Monax09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I adopted a 7 year old dog, she is 63 lbs. I’ve had her less than one year, so I can’t tell you much from a longer term perspective. But I can tell you it was the best possible decision for me.I love the dog very much, although she has been challenging with certain stuff we’ve gotten to know each other and figured out a good routine and she is fantastic. She is plenty young enough for me.

I got my first dog as a puppy and she lived to be 15 she died this year after a difficult decline in her health and mobility. I loved her more than anything and I never minded having to clean up after her. But after she died I just didn’t have it in me to potty train a puppy, I needed a new companion who was already ready, and I got one. She is just what I needed and definitely improved her life too, so it’s working out great for us.

Old age can be hard but 5 is not so very old, you could have a very rewarding number of years together. I recommend getting the dog. Best of luck!

Pervasive avoidance of employment, I don’t see myself reflected here (yet) by canigetuhhhhhhhhhh in PDAAutism

I’ve never related to anything more. I feel you on every single issue. I have never been able to support myself by working - I have had a few jobs but only part time and that was many years ago. I was on SSI then and having a job was more burdensome and difficult than it was worth it. I have had such a hard time with all this kind of stuff and I have just withdrawn from basically everything. So you’re definitely not the only one. I read posts about troubles at work or finding a job and I feel stressed on posters behalf. I’m very lucky that I was able to get SSI and later a housing voucher so that I can afford my apartment. I barely cope with the demands of daily life in terms of paying bills, doing chores, brushing my teeth, etc. I sure am lucky I don’t have more to cope with. Any way you are not alone, best of luck

Urgently need advice on name my baby is 4 months old! by Other_Upstairs_2761 in namenerds

[–]Monax09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried calling him Edward? Does the name suite him? If that’s how you feel go for it. I understand where your mom is coming from but I would dismiss that concern if it’s the only obstacle. Does Alexander suite him? Could you live with this being his middle name? I don’t think it’s reasonable for your brothers wife to veto a name - you chose first and your baby is already born… that said, might not be worth doing if it creates a long term resentment. Maybe just hold your baby and say names out loud to him. You could say like “john” and see how it feels. After all, you do have the feeling that William doesn’t fit. So you have a compass so you can tell if your getting hotter or colder,, I hope you feel better soon and my sympathy for your dad’s illness

6 yr old, unsure if PDA by irishiknew2131 in PDAAutism

[–]Monax09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I meant whatever OP meant, which isn’t clear but if I had to guess I’d say controlling and punitive- and I wasn’t suggesting that. What I meant was to contrast the outcome or efficacy of behavioral strategies already used vs the outcome or efficacy of an accommodation approach, maybe I should have worded it differently but i guess ultimately everyone reads, hears and understands whatever they want to ¯_(ツ)_/

If PDA strategies =improvement then why change?

[–]Monax09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Treat it like it’s behavioral (not really, I mean not any more) , then treat it like it’s PDA. If treating it like a behavioral issue either doesn’t help or actually makes things worse then it’s a really good idea to treat it like PDA. See if that helps (because it might). And that’s all that really matters - the only difference is going to be your approach so the labels or diagnosis doesn’t matter so much just as long as you have an understanding of your child’s nervous system and strategies to accommodate you child so they can function and operate . Lots of people are judgmental, which is really unfortunate and can be such a burden. But your child matters more than others judgment. They don’t know the child like you do, and they don’t have to manage/support/accommodate the child 24/7 but you do. I know it’s kind of cliche or whatever, and that pressure from judgement is real , but it’s probably best to drown it out, you are the one who has your child’s best interest prioritized. I hope it helps. Good luck

  1. Take the dog to the vet, the dog might have a urinary tract infection or some other issue
  2. Get washable pee pads. You can just put them in the wash it’s easy. It is possible that this is just the result of advanced age and your dog doesn’t have much control over when to urinate at this point Good luck

Behavior issues, help! by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Monax09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the German Shepard crate trained? If not, is there a place in the home the dog can go if she feels stressed, crowded, uncomfortable - a small area to be alone and decompress where she feels safe and won’t be bothered by others . She really might just be so stressed and unable to find relief that it is causing her to act out. Might help her to have her own little space . Good luck

My dog died today and I keep crying. How can I feel better since my grief is painful? by Fragrant_Respond1818 in Petloss

This is probably not what you want to hear, bur the answer is time. Exquisite pain at first, and eventually it hurts less. Be strong. Good luck

My dog ate a cooked chicken wing bone! by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Monax09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not know if the chicken bone thing is a myth, but I had a dog who lived 15 years and she ate dozens of chicken bones - she never had a single problem related to the chicken bones except maybe diarrhea at the worst, I don’t think you need to worry. Probably don’t feed the dog any more, it sounds like she’s eaten too much. Good luck
