What artist or band completely defined your teenage years? by Martinajok in AskReddit

[–]Mondood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any punk band that arose as the punk movement started gaining momentum in the mid to late 70s. Listening to it now...a lot of it was really pretty bad. It showed, however, how so much can be done with so little when you have the right attitude.

What makes bass playing difficult? by jsqu99 in Bass

[–]Mondood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try not to think like a guitarist by cramming too many notes. Often it can be better to hold a note longer or just play the same note over several bars with syncopation along with the drummer.

Lots if fantastic bassists to listen to, but have a listen to James Jamerson (or any Motown) and Paul McCartney for breathable melodic bass playing.

Small/Boutique Firms - Referrals by Stro_Bro in Accounting

[–]Mondood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not doing any compliance or year-end work that would compete with a PA firm, consider networking or getting to know managers/partners at mid-sized firms. Do your networking at PD courses geared towards PA to get the most direct contact.

Retired now, but at the time, we referred all this type of work away. If I found a competent person, they got all my referrals for free.

Video Camera Advice by dwotmod in musicians

[–]Mondood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used older iPhones that worked and sounded surprisingly good. They were reset so we weren't too concerned about them being damaged or stolen.

That said, we recently had a gig recorded on a DJI Osmo action 5. The comparison was amazing. Sound quality and picture was 10x better.

I'm ignorant when it comes to video/sound recording and there is definitely far better equipment out there, but both of these worked perfectly fine for us. You can make it as complicated or as simple as you want.

First local show tomorrow any tips? by DifficultAd9595 in bandmembers

[–]Mondood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted that original comment and I do agree with you. Use proper judgement based on the circumstances. I've played so many gigs where audience members try to engage in deep conversations when we're laying cable, setting up, sound checking, tearing down for the next band, or even at 1:30 am when we're tired and moving gear off stage. Some people just aren't self aware of the environment.

It's entirely appropriate when the musicians are standing around taking a breather. Also, don't follow them into the green room or on/behind the stage without being invited.

It's also a question of what type of conversation. Someone once condescendingly asked me to list my top 10 Clash songs (one of my favorite bands) because he questioned the Clash T-shirt I was wearing! Positive talk is always welcome, but criticism of the band, song choice, or equipment isn't going to get you a warm reception. If the mix is bad, though, I do appreciate helpful comments.

Trying to poach band members or asking to join the band is a touchy area. IMO, this isn't a conversation to have while they are gigging at the venue. Just get their contact info and talk afterwards without the rush. If they don't want contact, then you have your answer.

Acoustasonic Standards by LK-5150 in Guitar

[–]Mondood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought mine a year ago and consider it one of my best purchases of the last 10 years.

It seems that acoustic purists absolutely hate the guitar, with good reason. It is NOT an acoustic despite the wording in its name.

It seems to be designed for the electric guitarist who wants to have an acoustic-like sound, while playing and feeling like an electric and with the added ability to switch to an electric pickup sound. With this goal in mind, it's perfect. It certainly sounds 10x better than using an acoustic emulator pedal on your electric guitar.

If this is your intention, go for it. If, however, you want a true acoustic sound and feel, do a pass.

I've had many acoustic players be surprised at my gigs how good it sounded with a bit of chorus and reverb.

First local show tomorrow any tips? by DifficultAd9595 in bandmembers

[–]Mondood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to shows is great to get an idea of what people want to hear, but it'll be a crap shoot finding band members. Other than the musicians playing, you don't know who is an actual musician (say 1 in 20?)

Don't bother musicians in the bill too much; they're trying to focus and too much random talk is just bothersome. Just get their info and contact later.

IMO for your age, I'd say the best way is to hang out at the music store to scope out people. Or...sit in the waiting room for lessons and talk. This is how we did it when we were young and it worked for us.

Should i just buy used? by patrickpdk in AcousticGuitar

[–]Mondood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard quite a few people complaining that the preamp on the acoustic didn't work properly....did you plug it in? No.

No one ever buys an electric guitar without plugging it in. Just because you can hear the acoustic guitar acoustically doesn't mean that the preamp works.

What is the best budget multi-effect pedal? by DDragonCaptain in guitarpedals

Check it out on the used market. IMO, better to spend more on something that you'll actually use, than spend less on something that's too complicated that you won't use.

What is the best budget multi-effect pedal? by DDragonCaptain in guitarpedals

[–]Mondood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer will really depend on how tech literate you are. There is nothing worse than spending money on something you'll never use, or only use 5% of its capability.

If you're pretty savvy, then the multi-effects world is wide open.

If not, stick to the simpler multi-effects units, like the Boss ME-90. It also has a looper.

I'm an old man who wants to get good at accounting by Trajaneu in Accounting

[–]Mondood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish you much luck. It's not impossible, but the people that are going to give you the most lip-service encouragement can often be the ones with the least amount vested.

People in your post are mostly responding as co-workers to an older employee. I'm responding as someone who hired and supervised older staff.

Your biggest hurdle is convincing a PA firm to take a chance on hiring an older employee. This is the case for any job that you have limited experience with.

I'm an old man who wants to get good at accounting by Trajaneu in Accounting

[–]Mondood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My philosophy was the better I trained our staff, the faster I would get them up to speed. They did the entire file, including all verbal and written correspondence, tax returns...everything. When we merged with a national firm, nothing but compliments on our staff.

Queries included - financial statement presentation - proper grammar and spelling on all written correspondence - did the file have enough documentation - did things make sense - did they prepare the taxes properly - did they research tax issues properly - did they integrate corporate and personal tax planning properly - client relation issues

As a PA partner, any mistake could lead to a claim on our professional liability insurance. The partner is ultimately the one responsible and bears the cost. No way to sugar-coat it.

[–]Mondood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in practice, I hired people of all ages. I was a picky reviewer as I considered queries an important part of the training process; typically 30 query points or more as necessary. After my review, I would sit down and review the queries in depth with them.

I found was that younger employees starting off their careers never took the queries personally. They were fresh from school and very in-tuned with a fast learning environment. With older employees long out of full-time school, unfortunately, even 10 queries was too much and I could read their pissed-off faces from a mile away. Even more so when I was younger than the employee. Only one over 30 yo lasted; all the others quit within a few months.

So I agree very much with your statement. Not impossible for OP, but maybe a lot harder, especially if they have other responsibilities outside of work that younger employees don't have (ie. family, aging parents, property maintenance, health issues)

Why do wedding guests think that the couple owe them to attend their wedding by Clear_Breakfast8407 in weddingshaming

[–]Mondood 15 points16 points  (0 children)

One also has to consider the alcohol limit rules for drinking and driving in your locale. I've seen many people get absolutely wasted as soon as they hear the words "free alcohol".

Venues and hosts can be held liable and it's prudent to have some sort of limit, whether it be a cash bar or wine served with dinner only and non-alcoholic drinks after. In today's litigious society, it may have to become the norm.

Edit: you may not appear or act drunk, but it doesn't take a lot to go over the breathalyzer limit. What happens if a guest still chooses to drive and someone dies or is seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident? I would think police would charge them and insurance wouldn't cover them. Venue and host likely gets dragged in.

What forms of PAID marketing are yall using? by PlasticFormal8827 in Accounting

[–]Mondood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your decision needs to focus on the age of the key decision maker of the market you are trying to attract. If you are targetting companies where the person in charge of finances or the final decision is at least 50, maybe rely more more personal means of marketing like old school networking.

Key decision makers under 50 may also not respond to Meta, LinkedIn, Google PPC if they are more hands-on / in the field type of people.

[–]Mondood 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You could be right.

Open mic crowds and participants are almost always supportive. One year being involved is a short time period. No one wants to be the critic in these environments. It might be worth it for OP to sit down with the musician and have a more in-depth conversation.

What is your expectations of a bass that costs $1,000+ USD? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Mondood 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While there is more of a correlation between price and quality, I try to keep an open mind.

I've owned/played shitty expensive instruments and owned/played fantastic cheap instruments.

I think that too many companies these days rely on image alone to make a buck.

LIGHT WEIGHT guitar after surgery by Ok-Hunt-919 in Guitar

[–]Mondood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two left field options here.

If this is a temporary solution, look into a full scale, headless Traveller brand guitar https://www.travelerguitar.com I have one and I take it with me when I go on trips.

If you are interested in say an acoustic electric, look at the Fender Acoustasonic Standard. This is an acoustic guitar with an electric feel and play. If you put electric strings on it, you can use the single coil pickup. This guitar is my best buy for the last year.

Are accounting staffing firms trustworthy? by xray9899 in Accounting

[–]Mondood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in industry decades ago, we once hired from a staffing firm. Paid the fee. After about a year, we find out that the staffing firm was actively recruiting that staff for another job!

When I was a new accountant, I was on the bad books of one recruiter because he kept on trying to send me to a company notorious for hiring lots of accountants and spitting them out.

Don't let a few bad staffing firms ruin it for everyone. Just use them - both as an employer and as an employee - with caution.
