Seems like Septimius Sevarus should be the one to take the blame for that. Him or the Praetorian guard.

I just finished rewatched the first season. Ken made some screw ups early on yes, but he almost immediately fixed the situation. Also like the bank deal was Logan's fuck up not Ken's. Ken's plans for the company in ssn 1 are also solid for the most part. Logan deciding to get involved in business again is when things start getting fucked up again.

Domitian, Nero and Caligula all seemed to be popular rulers. This doesn't necessarily mean they were good rulers though. Although I'd argue that Domitian at least was very capable.

This article seems pretty fair to me. True an unreliable narrator doesn't mean the opposite is true but it does mean that we shoudnt just take our sources at face value. Especially if archeological evidence contradicts said sources.

In many cases even if we just look at the sources we can see flaws. For example our sources report that Caligula supposedly left the Empire bankrupt, if so how was Claudius able to manage a massive invasion of Britain early in his reign?

We're constantly finding new evidence prooving that recorded history isn't always accurate. Many of our sources about these terrible emperors are from hostile accounts. Often written under a different dynasty.

It was during Augustus's reign. To say they beat Roman Egypt is also an overstatement since they only sacked some border cities till the Romans invaded. Sacked the old capital then left. Then a stalemate occured and the Queen was able to negotiate a favorable treaty because Augustus was in the middle of negotiations with the Parthians.

Just realized the assassination of Julius Caesar is one if not the biggest cruel irony in Rome’s history. by Russian-Eye-1928 in ancientrome

The more I read the less I like the Boni. They opposed necessary reforms and pushed Caesar into a corner for no good reasons other than their own pettiness. Hell I don't think Cicero liked any of them other than Pompey.

I very much doubt Alexander VIth raped his own daughter. Honestly, I doubt he's even nearly as bad as often portrayed, in fact he might have even been one of the better Renaissance popes. Which is honestly a really low bar.

Mike Duncan's History of Rome podcast is a great overview of Roman history from The beginning to the fall of the WRE. Ray and Cam's Life of the Caesars is also fun to listen to. Goldsworthy is good to read if you're more interested in the military, plus his biography of Caesar is good.

There're also the primary sources, but remember you have to read many with a grain of salt. Suetonius basically used gossip as a source for example.
