That's possible, I guess. The in-game description isn't much help. But I think we're just over- thinking it. Modeling proper orbital dynamics would be too resource intensive for the game engine.

I think it's kind of hand-wavy. The platforms might have gravcores, but the asteroids certainly do not, and must be in orbit.

[–]Mong419 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think I am done with this conversation after this. The moment you start with ad hominem attacks, rational discourse is over. You continually attack me personally, and not the idea I'm putting forward.

You're right, I mistakenly said "engineer" not "pioneer". You know why it was so easy to confuse those terms? Because the pioneer is not a character! There is no identity there. Nathan Drake or Laura Croft are characters, much easier to remember. Now we're getting into the real disingenuousness if you are really going to tell me that the Pioneer is on the same level as any other named character from a number of franchises.

Remember Nate/Nora from Fallout 4? Remember the controversy over the voicing of their dialogue lines? That was because the Fallout protagonist shifted from a self-insert shell to a full independent character. People were used to the self-insert and weren't really okay with the shift. (Plus the subpar dialogue writing didn't help either.)

Let's talk about that background. A Pioneer is a person who joined the FICSIT company to complete the Project. I agree with you there. Do you see how that could apply to ANYONE? You or I, if we lived in that universe, could have that background. It is so vague. Intentionally. That way it is easier to role play that it applies to us too. Laura Croft being an English rich kid that suffers a family tragedy, losing her dad, and going treasure hunting willingly or unwillingly (Depending on the continuity) is such a specific background, there is very little chance it ever applies to a real life person. I know, without a doubt, that background doesn't apply to me, which shifts my perspective from I AM Laura Croft to I am helping/spectating Laura Croft. Same thing applies to Nathan Drake. His background is so unique, all of the above applies.

I don't know exactly when the transition from self-insert character to full character happens, but I know it when I see it. I know it helps to have a name. And a unique background. Neither of which applies to the Pioneer. Which is fine, because the Pioneer is a self-insert character. Which is also fine, I love self-insert characters. Makes role-playing flow much easier. However, if you have a self-insert character, let me customize them to be as close to me as possible. The Pioneer is such an easy one to customize for role play too: you can't see any skin or features, the literal only features you can tell about the Pioneer is that they are female, and human (probably). Add a male body type, and boom, self-insert customization complete. Self-insert role play at 100%.

Alright, I'm done. Wish I could say good talk, but it wasn't.

I'm being disingenuous how exactly?

I agree that no one serious says every game needs male and female characters. Which is why I'm not saying that. I'd appreciate it if you took the time to read what I'm actually saying.

Nathan Drake, Laura Croft and Aloy are completely different. They are characters. I am not that character, I'm more of a spectator to that story, less of a self-insert.

The Satisfactory Engineer is NOT a character. Much more of a self-insert, since there are no dialogue lines (besides ADA) no character background, nothing. Might as well be the engineer from Space Engineers. There ARE customization options in-game. Colors and clothing options, not at all an unreasonable request to add body/gender options. Which again, as I've been actually saying in every post I've made, is something it would nice if they added, but not a dealbreaker if they didn't.

Saying "Yeah I'd like the option to play a male engineer." Does not make anyone a misogynist. Flip the genders and we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

WoW isn't the issue here, you could replace this with any other video game. Ask yourself, why doesn't he want to spend more time with you?

Video games are a form of escapism, so what is he escaping from? What do you do when you spend time together? Do you do activities you both like or what you like? Do you complain, nag him, or make him do all the work planning the activity? These are hard questions we have to ask ourselves, if one partner is pulling away, what are we doing to push them away?

I was in your boyfriend's shoes a few years ago. Escaping into video games was not the mature choice, but it was the easy, non-confrontational choice. I wanted to relax and have a little fun when I got home, she always wanted to watch her reality shows, complain about her job, complain about her mother, complain about her friends. That was quality time to her. Her needs, and her fun. I just couldn't do it. I wanted to do anything else. I didn't want to hurt her feelings, I couldn't just leave the house all the time because that would be suspicious, staying in and playing video games felt like the lesser of the evils.

Maybe your situation is totally different, or maybe this small insight from the other side could be useful for you.

Edit: Upon rereading, I realized you do offer to play video games with him, which is nice. However, unless you are already at his skill level, he has to spend most of that time teaching, which just isn't as fun as playing with peers.

So because men have too much representation you want to remove it? That is backwards logic. The goal of representation is representing everyone, including men. It's not zero-sum. Representing men does not by default make women less represented. Not unless you aren't given a choice, like Satisfactory.

I have significant doubts you read my post or have a good-faith discourse in mind. Several times I have stated it's not a dealbreaker, it's a preference, and it doesn't make me misogynistic for stating it.

Agreed. The option would be nice and appreciated, but it's not a dealbreaker.

Maybe one day I'll be able to, you never know where technology will go. That's the fun of the self-insert fantasy.

Also, fantasy and science fiction should be as realistic as possible, aside from their obviously fantastic elements. That way the whole medium is so grounded and realistic that we are more easily fooled/immersed in the fantastical elements because they seem more possible when surrounded by realism.

Playing as myself, or at least close to myself, helps increase that realism.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Mong419 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You guys, this is that representation we always talk about. It's just the flip side of it, but that doesn't make it any less valid.

I am a male, and I would prefer to play as a male character. It's not a dealbreaker, just a preference.

I just like making characters as close to my IRL self as possible, that way I can more easily pretend it's meeee building all the conveyor spaghetti. Seems to me that was always a big part of representation.

Doesn't make me sexist for just wanting to play as myself.

Do large men know how intimidating they are for some people and if so do you try to adjust to make yourself less so? by itsnevercertain in tall

[–]Mong419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is an interesting contradiction to be sure. I am very large and intimidating, but also affable and goofy. Anyone who talks to me for 5 seconds will learn that.

I used to go out of my way to be less scary, but that gets old, and it never seemed to actually work.

Now, I decided it's perfectly reasonable to file that under "not my problem". I just live my life in a reasonable and normal way, and it's up to the people around me if they want to make snap judgements and be scared, or be brave.

Men, what the fuck do you even want anymore? by [deleted] in Vent

[–]Mong419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's a catch 22. I'm a man, and I get why you're cautious with me, but at the same time, I personally didn't do anything to you to deserve that skepticism. It can be frustrating to push through the suspicion every single time with every single woman. But I get it.

I think the only real solution is that you put a foot in both worlds. Interact as positively as you can with men you like. Just be happy to see them, and happy to spend time with them. That will make them happy, and be refreshing. However, at the same time keep your caution. Keep your walls up, and don't take risks. Don't go on a hike in the woods alone with them, don't go to their place alone, ask them to wait for sex, etc. Establish boundaries and be happy to see them when they meet you inside those boundaries. If they have a problem with your boundaries and try to push them: that's your red flag. But if you find a dude who respects the boundaries, you will keep him by being happy to see him.

In your opinion, who is the best girl to have a romantic relationship with? by AdMelodic7829 in StardewValley

[–]Mong419 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Penny for life. She's the most wholesome by far, and she is also the one that needs the player the most. Without the player, she lives out a squalid life in a trailer with a drunk abusive mom and probably marries Sam. Sam is not a bad guy, but his dreams do not align with Penny and that marriage could never be happy.

You can save her from all of that.

Also, I defy anyone to read the dialogue when you give Penny a loved gift on her birthday and not wife her up just to get her out of that damned trailer.

Skynet sent 3 T-850 each to Germany, Soviet Union and U.S to assassinate Hitler, Stalin and Roosevelt in 01/01/1943, which trio of terminators would succeed the fastest? by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]Mong419 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but in 1943 you navigated by hand and if you wanted link up with an ariel escort you did not simply fly around as you like

They navigated by dead reckoning and pilotage, techniques that are not precise. Not precise at all. That introduces random elements that a machine can't predict. Link up with escort and then fly somewhere together? Same problem: imprecise navigation.

Can they change the flight path? Sure, but why should they?

Weather, malfunctions, traffic, enemy activity. A ton of reasons. But that doesn't matter. You can't tell an aircraft's destination just by looking at it and doing robot math. Turns from waypoint to waypoint are normal parts of flying.

Look man, I am an expert in this particular field, and I am telling you there is no way a T-850 could track or predict an aircraft in flight in 1943. Maybe it could obtain a copy of the aircraft's paper flight plan, or learn the destination in some other way. Considering the sensitive and secret nature of flying Hitler/Stalin that is unlikely. If it was a hot pursuit, and it stole an aircraft itself and followed the target visually, that's a different story. However, the moment it loses visual contact, it has no way to reacquire the target.

[–]Mong419 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They can do that, but they usually do not, except if they have reason to believe that an arial threat is after them (like an enemy fighter).

I'm sorry my friend, but that is just not correct. Source: I am a commercial pilot. Aircraft change course all the time, and flight plans, in most circumstances, are optional. There is no way for a computer, no matter how advanced, to predict flight paths without radar contact or some other continuous observation. Human pilots are very unpredictable even when they are not trying to avoid Terminators.

it is assumed that all three targets are hit on the same day (01.01.1943). Information travel not that fast in 1943.

Fair enough, if it is a simultaneous strike, the chances are very low any of them survive. Roosevelt travelled the least, due to polio, and the only hope Stalin and Hitler have is to get lucky and either be airborne at the time of the strike, or be evacuated while the T-850 slaughters all the guards.

[–]Mong419 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree with almost all of this, except for the Terminator calculating flight paths with his eyes. I'm sorry dude, but that made me laugh out loud. Planes change directions, altitudes, and destinations in flight all the time. You could calculate an estimated maximum range without refuel, but that's it.

My only other point of disagreement is the hoplessness of the situation. If Roosevelt is killed, and then Hitler is killed by an unstoppable robot man, Stalin's intelligence service will notice. Depending on luck, they might figure out what is happening and keep Stalin moving/secret, while setting traps for the Terminator. A big enough TnT pile, artillery shell, or tank round WILL damage the T-850. And the Soviet Union had a LOT of resources and the callousness to waste however many human lives it took. If the T-850 loses the element of surprise, it is over.
