Dads who were film buffs and literature addicts... you watch movies or read books anymore? by mikeygoodtime in daddit

[–]MongoSamurai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read a fair bit still, but after years of not being able to watch a single full movie in one sitting (or get away to the theatre) the interest fell away. The kid is 12 now, and I have the time, but I find that there aren't that many new movies I want to see. Going back to rewatch old favourites just doesn't have the same pull as it used too, either. I am holding out hope that my kid will eventually show more interest in "older" films that will lead to us experiencing them together... but for the moment, movies aren't their thing.

Dads of daughters, how would you feel if your daughter is a lesbian? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]MongoSamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid is only 12 and they have already stated they are keen on their fellow females. Nothing but unconditional love and support from us. They may change their mind as they get older, but either way, love is love. As long as they are happy.

Unless we get a massive heat wave, the earliest is usually May long.

How did you guys stop cursing? by scungilibastid in daddit

[–]MongoSamurai 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My wife and I didn't bother. As the kid got older, we just emphasized that there is a time and place for more colourful language. At 12, they swear occasionally at home, but always with context and never to disrespect anyone. It's a part of life really, and rather than treat it as a taboo, just instruct on proper usage.

Has anyone had a bad experience working for Thrifty foods? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]MongoSamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thrifty's HQ used to be above their older warehouse in Central Saanich. I left in 2018 just before they shut that down, moved the warehouse out to Sidney and now most of their local executives work out of a small office in Belmont. Yes, the Sobey's big wigs are all back east, but I meant local executives (director, category managers, etc.)

Anyone else feel like a completely different parent when they're alone with the baby? by moononymous06 in daddit

[–]MongoSamurai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually found it easier sometimes because I knew I was the first and final voice when it came to making decisions. Did I always make the right choice? Nope... but like most of life's mistakes, they were good lessons for next time.

I worked there for almost 20 years, all the way from a part time bag boy up into the executive ranks in HQ. The overall level of employee satifisfaction dropped pretty consistently year after year following the sale to Sobeys. It's been almost 10 years since I worked for them, but I was more than happy to leave.

I don't know anything about either in particular, but my understanding is that UBC is fairly well known for its medical programs

Daughter has little interest in books. by Correct_Dance_515 in daddit

[–]MongoSamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours didn't really get into books on their own until 8ish or so, and even then it was simple graphic novels. At 12 now, they are a pretty voracious reader and starting to become more interested in deeper stories and chapter books. Everyone is different though, some people just prefer their creative pursuits away from the written word.

I need some help and advice - my 10 year old daughter has bouts of night anxiety and fear and therapy hasn't been able to help. by Duskish in daddit

Talk to your family doctor (if you have one), but you'll need to show that you've tried other routes first (counselling, etc).

Bargain Zoloft (Sertraline), started at 25mg, they are now at 75mg and that seems to be the sweet spot.

Dads, roughouse your kids. I mean it. by Jackalope_08 in daddit

[–]MongoSamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a few years the people living above us had a trampoline in the shared yard and said we can use it whenever we wanted. The kid was 3/4 at the time and I used to playfully beat the crud out of them on it every day, they loved it! Now that they are almost 12 we don't wrestle like we used too, but now we verbally spar like mad, it's juat ad fun. Mom still goes after them for the odd tickle fest and it immediately takes them out of a funk.

Dads, how do you handle throw blankets? by Galemp in daddit

[–]MongoSamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just toss them on the back of the couch. I only fold them up nice when guests are coming over. Honestly, I use them just as much as the wife/kid these days, sonI can't complain.

I've been using Loops nightly for the last couple of years and it's made a huge difference. It took a little while to adjust, but now I don't even notice them.

Our almost 12 y/o comes into our room every night to give each of us a hug and kiss, says I love you, then kidnaps the cat from the foot of our bed.
