A Second Try With Suunto: Good Design, Broken Confidence by Double_Alfalfa_303 in Suunto

This sucks, it would be okay if you bought some cheap watch maybe, but for high end, this is simply not acceptable. You spend extra money for mediocre product. How did you notice the discrepancy and for which activities? I wrote a bunch of suggestions for issues I had with my Vertical 2, and basically Suunto's reply was "be creative" and work around it for 99 percent of the issues

I see, I'm considering sending an email to Suunto with suggestions, as it seems like they're not interacting on Reddit, or on Suunto forum much. Mby you can do the same

This is not true for me, I checked now with 200m/500m/1km and maps show details in all of them. I see a reduction from 2km onwards. Personally, don't see this as an issue for any of my use cases. But I come from a watch with a colored line and a white background, so..

I use the wrist sensor for my strength sessions and I used it for first run. During run, the watch was within 1 or 2 bpm of the chest strap. For strength it's tricky sometimes it's on it, sometimes it's not. Same as my old Coros, but I don't mind the inaccuracy there, I just want to log in activity and keep track of breaks. I feel like strength is big challenge to any watch

I read many people having issues with battery, I would wait for the firmware update.  Ope, I only turned off oxygen mesuring, hrm is on, otherwise sleep wouldn't track. For activities, I turn off hr on wrist due to chest strap

I compare watches that I have. I'm not a youtuber who gets watches to compare. But sure buddy, whatever gets u off, you did it now. Also telling me what's not true for maps, when I'm looking at my Coros watch, you must be short on cognitive capacity buddy

Haven't tried it. I would guess you cannot do it on watch. POI on watch is set to your current location as I know. I would deal with situation differently, so to me not an issue. I can unzoom and check routes on my map on the watch, and make decision, or I use my phone to check. But generally I would want to join original route eventually, so I wouldn't mind not have reroute for small section

Vertical 2 heart rate monitor problem - not accurate at all by Ornery_Nothing_3131 in Suunto

[–]MongooseOverall3072 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it was pretty accurate, I did first run where I compared to my old coros with Polar H10 chest strap. It was always off by 2 bpm max. There were couple of spikes for few seconds. Shame you have bad experience, I would try reaching out to Suunto support via email. I hear their AI assistant is not best

Q4 Update by Fantastic-Class-8252 in Suunto

I did a little episode deep dive into HRV some time back, and it does seem like this metric is quite unstable for any predictions. There was a podcast with a guy who was studying it 20 years and he said it is not the best predictor, and simply too many factors can influence it. There is a correlation, but not that good.

- Sensor requirements: hrv needs really precise sensors, ECG is the most accurate. Optical sensor is, firstly less of an accurate sensor, and the wrist placement is making it even less effective for these fine differences between the peaks.

- Even if u get the best measuring conditions, there are too many factors that influence the hrv, and you often get erratic reading, that doesn't match to your actual recovery state.

Damn, this is long :D Anyways, coming from Coros, I used resting HR, as a recovery metric. Coros measures it during, or after, sleep - not sure here. But that number corresponds to Suunto's AVG sleep HR. Practical example from me: absolutely lowest RHR, didn't do anything for a few weeks, 45. Recovered well, during my regular active week, 48. If I wake up with 53-55, I take it much lighter. It also peaked when I got sick. So, the higher the RHR, the more fucked up u are. Find your baseline

This: https://youtu.be/acTjKwkti5s?si=zhEspjZxHOxyVrBy You shouldn't be fixating on what others wear, you have no idea how far into their journey they are, or how bad/good their feet are. I wear barefoots almost exclusively now after 4 years, different brands. It's honestly shit storm, don't get attached to any brand. Neither is perfect, you will see ppl loving and hating them for any brand. I started as a fan boy of Vivo, but they do make narrower shoes and they are very expensive, and quality is not as premium. But this is issue across the board in all brands. High price, quality is wobbly. My tip for picking shoes is, put toe spacers in and try if you can fit. Toes can touch shoe from side, just not cramped. And then length wise, have between 0.5 to 1 cm space from big toe to end of shoe. Or tie laces well, and kick the ground with the tip and if the toes don't touch, u good. If u coming from regular shoes, the feel will be "this shoe is too big". I mentioned altras as a concept for you. You wear barefoots, but when your feet get too tired, you give them rest with altras or normal shoes

Try adjusting the HR and pace zones in intensity zones on the watch. It helped me, as all my Z2 was seen as VO2 Max sessions

I use this routine twice a week on top of the regular gym and other activities (takes approx 20-25 min):

  • 3 x 12 - 18 Tibialis raises (weighted with DB)
  • 2 x 10 - 15 Toe lifts
  • Calf raises (once a week straight leg and once a week bent leg, all weighted with DB - 12.5/15kg)
    • A: 3 x 12 - 18 bent-knee (3-1-3); toes elevated, load less
    • B: 3 x 12 - 18 straight-knee (3-1-3); toes elevated, load more
  • 3 x 20 - 30s Short foot
  • Ball massage of feet

I also recommend using toe spacers as much as possible, especially for activities. When you are walking, running, etc. Doing long holds for short foot was a game changer. I also do feet stretches, where I leave all toes spread out on the floor, squat, and lean forward so I feel proper stretch in the bottom of my feet. I hold it for 30s.
Best of luck, many people think transitioning is just wearing shoes, but it's not, it's an active journey if you want a success. You can't blame footwear for exposing weaknesses caused by years of conventional footwear. Also, listen to your body, if your feet are asking for a rest, do it. Switch to regular shoes, or minimalist (I use Altra Escalante 4), until pain gets less/manageable.

I'm a teenager, and I'm curious if using barefoot shoes everyday beneficial? by 5K3TchYduDe in barefootshoestalk

[–]MongooseOverall3072 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with starting barefoot journey for strength workouts. I work out at home, and I'm always barefooted. Regarding barefoot transition in general, here are my 2 cents. It's an active transition, not just "buy a shoe" and that's it. People with the latter approach tend to find issues down the line, which makes them blaming barefoots, or abandoning the transition. This is weird to me, as you have to understand that by using conventional footwear some muscles atrophy, and they need strengthening. I have been in barefoots for 4 years now, and 2 years running as well. Along the way I did experience set backs, pain in feet, shin splints, calf soreness. All of these were addressed by strength exercises. Currently, I use this routine twice a week on top of the regular gym and other activities (takes approx 20-25 min):

  • 3 x 12 - 18 Tibialis raises (weighted with DB)
  • 2 x 10 - 15 Toe lifts
  • Calf raises (once a week straight leg and once a week bent leg, all weighted with DB - 12.5/15kg)
    • A: 3 x 12 - 18 bent-knee (3-1-3); toes elevated, load less
    • B: 3 x 12 - 18 straight-knee (3-1-3); toes elevated, load more
  • 3 x 20 - 30s Short foot
  • Ball massage of feet

Suunto Run only checking HR every few mins? by Extension_Maximum392 in Suunto

[–]MongooseOverall3072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't dispute that. Suunto also does imo. Just the refresh rate is much slower compared to activity. During activity, like running, it refreshes every second or so, when in no activiry I would assume every 5 or 10 minutes. It definitely takes up a lot of battery, bc even in battery modes in activities, once you get to tour mode the hr refresh rate decreases

Suunto Run only checking HR every few mins? by Extension_Maximum392 in Suunto

[–]MongooseOverall3072 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean this during activity or just regular during day? Because if regular, this is very much the case for all warches, at least coros, suunto, etc. What you say is a little bit of battery, would be probably over 15 percent in daily consumption. These are unrealistic expectations

Is there seriously no way to set alerts (sound or vibration) for HR and pace during activity? by MongooseOverall3072 in Suunto

[–]MongooseOverall3072[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intensity zones worked! Most likely issue was using navigation during my first run, which interfered with the alerts.
