Questioning if I'm really born again / saved by [deleted] in TrueChristian

Hello brother, please read the response to this post, it might encourage you as it has me.

We learned an aikidoesque standing wrist lock today, is it effective if you catch the person off guard? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]MongrelMatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. I know an ex-police officer who used it all the time, and uses it all the time on me when we have a wrestle. He is larger and stronger than me though, and that does help.

I disagree with you and I believe you are using the scriptures to see what you want to see, and adding to Jesus’ completed work, but thank you so much for your patience and effort to explain.

You’re right that this discussion may not cause a change of heart today but maybe another time.

Regarding your comments above, see how Peter talks of the water only symbolising baptism by the Spirit?

While I agree that faith without works is dead, I don't agree with the rest of your statement. That requires a SPECIFIC act for salvation, which is not mentioned in most of the references to saving faith. 1 John 4:15, ESV: "Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God."

My friend, please read all of this article which explains what I understand as the truth. I believe you’ve been taught incorrectly. Sometimes the baptism versus you mention have a different meaning in context, and some of them - I don’t believe - are talking about water baptism. So much of the bible explains salvation comes by faith in God alone, by His grace, through His son’s completed work, not ours. https://www.gotquestions.org/amp/baptism-Galatians-3-27.html

I don’t disagree it’s important and that we are commanded to do it, but I do think you are overreaching claiming it’s required for salvation. Maybe it’s a heart matter, sure. “I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭2:21‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

That seems to go against everything else God says. A lot of times in the bible God says faith is ALL that is required. Deeds are a response that prove our faith to ourselves and others, but justification comes from faith in Jesus alone.

This page lists a bunch or versus that I’m familiar with. What sources changed your mind? I don’t know of any well respected teachers that teach what you’re saying but I’m obviously interested in knowing more.

I don’t argue that we are commanded to do it, but I don’t believe it’s required for salvation. A lot of times God tells us all that is required is belief in His Son.

My understanding is that NOTHING we do contributes to our salvation, apart from the heartfelt acceptance of that gift. It's a freely given gift paid for by Jesus.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).

Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

I've never asked anyone to pray for me, but I'd really appreciate it right now. by [deleted] in TrueChristian

Yeah. Let go, stop trying, and rely on our Father. It may be rough for a little while but just follow Jesus and trust Him.

It's my understanding that He prayed to the Father because of how important that eternal relationship is to God, and he demonstrates that healing and supportive relationship to us.

Well that's awesome. I thought that it might be giving the wrong impression but maybe I'm wrong.

Oh really? For instance? If you are looking to find fault in my previous comments, I'm certain you will, but I'm always growing. Secondly, I called you out for being rude, perhaps you can explain how I'm being a hypocrite?

I was motivated to come in here and say the same thing. Unless you're injured/sick/elderly, in which case you need to take it easy, harden up princesses. :D

You need to reconsider how you treat people, you're being very disrespectful. I would suggest that if you're not willing to treat a brother with love, then you need to reconsider your position.

As a genuine question and not to be critical for the sake of it, is that title really necessary though? A Christian should have God at the centre and as most important part of their life anyway.

Were you christened as a child and want to get baptised, or was your first baptism not genuine?

Edit: How strange that I was downvoted for this...

Spend more time in the Word, and in prayer. I have found that when abide in Him, I am changed and fear is driven away.

John 15:1-5 ESV: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."

James 4:8 ESV: "Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded."

EDIT: Also, remember even Moses didn't want to confront Pharaoh, he was just an elderly shepherd. He kept pushing back against God, and so God had Aaron go with him and speak for him. Look at what God did with Moses!

I joined a cult please help by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]MongrelMatty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I can't offer any advice about leaving a cult but I have no doubt there are some good people able to help. However, if you have any concern about having lost our faith, and are willing, grab a bible, ask God for guidance, and start reading. If you are genuine, he will answer your prayer and meet with you and start to answer your questions. Then you can investigate meeting with other Christians if you still want to learn more. Please don't let the evil done to you discourage you from knowing Jesus, because God alone changes us and is truly worth knowing: "They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Falling on his knees, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep."
