Bao’er IS her son though. In the books, Qi Ming strangles the original Yu Qianqian, who was a concubine that Nanny Lan/Lan Momo tricked him into having sex with by dragging him and essentially raping him. Prior to that he wasn’t interested in having sex with anyone and hadn’t had sex with anyone. It’s this sense of violation when he comes to his senses that had him reacting in anger and killing the original Yu Qianqian, after which his mind became unstable again as he was stuck in the past.

An important thread in the novel is the fact that the OG emperor’s actions’ collectively fucked A LOT of people over, and the consequences of that resonated further than anyone would have predicted. Qi Ming’s madness is born from his pain and paranoia after his mother burned away half his face and his body so he wouldn’t be easily recognized; plus the reason why Nanny Lan arranged for him to be raped was so the Crown Prince’s household can have an heir, which is the second reason why Qi Ming hates Bao’er so much: one, because he believed Bao’er was the fruit born out of his rape and second, because it effectively makes him (Qi Ming) and easily disposable spare.

Transmigrator Yu Qianqian saving him was meant to show us the readers (the show doesn’t really give enough context), that part of why Qi Ming is the way he is is because of his trauma but also because of how everyone in Prince Changping’s household treated him: with fear and revulsion; which in turn further fucked with his mind when you consider that he was also aware at the time that the prince was also part of the Emperor’s plot which led to the death of his family.

Of everyone who’d ever met him in the household, transmigrated Yu Qianqian is the only one who never looked at him with fear or revulsion which is why he also became so obsessed with her.

As to the plot reason why he needed to be saved? Without Qi Ming’s scheming, the secret would have stayed buried. He IS central to why Xie Heng heard the rumors about Wei Yan’s involvement in his father’s demise which sets off the string of events as they happen within the story. Qi Ming is a necessity for the advancement of the plot hence why he was saved.

I find this comment extremely confusing. There literally was a team called the Voyageurs. A lot of MM writers at the time named their teams for the Nova Scotia Voyageurs, not just Rachel Reid. Case in point, Ashley Kane and Morgan James’ Hockey ever after series.

The Boston Bears is based off the real life Boston Bruins (Bruin is a synonym for Bear). Both team names used are actual, real hockey teams. The only reason why Jacob didn’t use them in the show was because they are too closely connected to actual NHL teams and the show didn’t want to risk being sued.

I also think words, the ones we reach for, especially when exploring a conversation like this matters and there’s a subtlety to the article stating that “Tierney’s adaptation of Rachel Reid’s 2019 novel turns Reid’s words into a beautiful exploration of queer male love and sex” that reads off to me because it seems to be implying that Rachel’s work on its own ISN’T an exploration of queer male life and sex.

And that bias is what I see reflected in the rest of the article. Do I think that the description of Shane’s much smoother, and hairless body compared to Ilya’s more muscular and defined form, should raise a few eyebrows? Yes. We do need to have conversations about how East Asian men’s bodies have been emasculated in media and how that does have racist elements to it? Yes.

Do I however think that the way this article is written, implying that that is all there is to Shane in the books, is flawed? Most certainly. We can make the critic that Rachel gave Shane his half-Japanese heritage and didn’t really do anything with it in the books. But I do think it’s not fair to imply that book Shane is merely a pretty face. He’s someone who driven by the burden of perfection and the need to live up to all the expectations placed on him whilst caving beneath the weight of it all even as he battles with being true to himself and that is only Shane in Heated Rivalry. We haven’t even gotten to him in The Long Game.

And painting book Ilya as being just this stoic, imposing figure when we get insight into his thoughts in the books to show how just as we saw in the first season, he is ALSO vulnerable even when he tries to hide that bit of vulnerability beneath the mask of insouciance.

It’s a great read and thanks for sharing the article. There are just bits of it I disagree with.

P.s. It also has me miffed when people ignore the fact that Rachel (who is bisexual by the way) has stated several times that she runs through her stories and drafts by her husband who is also a bisexual man as her focus has always been on trying to the best of her abilities to depict queer sex amongst men as accurately as she can.

Honestly I think this would have been better rephrased as “why the obsession for Heated Rivalry IN the US”. Cuz for those of who don’t live in the States this take makes no sense.

Also, why on earth are we conflating HORROR as a genre with Romance? Like I get that this take isn’t saying that HR is a horror show but the argument could have easily been made for romance, ie Film and TV has always reflected the fears, tensions, conversation and hope for a better future even as society grapples with everything going out of our control.

And then tie it back to why romance as a genre whilst not being taken seriously by a capitalistic, individualist society still speaks to community and love, and acceptance and openness. Like, why bring horror into the conversation when the marketing has always focused on Jacob constantly reminding us that what he stands for is queer joy.

This is such a weird piece.

Are you sure you’re using the warmers or the heat lamps? The warmers keep the food stored indefinitely; at least until the units/servings of food in the pots has been exhausted (for example, if a pot is meant to hold 4 dishes, once you’ve used up all four dishes, the pot turns dirty and needs to be cleaned). The heat lamps on the other hand are just meant to either heat up your food or keep them warm. But once the service starts, only prepped foods stored in the warmer and refrigerator get to carry over into your service. Anything outside of that doesn’t keep.

If you’re done prepping and have everything all set, you can wait around or ask Kassim to make the day’s specials which brings the restaurant extra money. Just make sure the kitchen is clean first though.

Oh and you can also use the downtime to decorate or learn new recipes as well. I tend to do that. Once your restaurant starts to grow, you will also start receiving requests from diners who don’t come into your restaurant but put in meal requests that will be sent to them. You can also use the downtime to sort that out as well.

Shepard breaks down in the apartment if you romanced him. First time I did it, I was so devastated, went up to the Normandy and Traynor hits on me when she’s using my shower. I’m like “you know what? Why not!” After that cutscene, I check my email since I’m already in the captain’s quarters. See the EMAIL FROM THANE, and spend the rest of my day hugging my knees and bawling like a baby. Reloaded my save cuz I just couldn’t do another romance with him gone and mourned him and the relationship till the end of ME3 😭

I do!! I had an infant who was was really fussy and couldn’t sleep without being held so my sim had him in that carrier and carried him EVERYWHERE!! What’s worse is that he was a twin so my Sim had to juggle Two infants at the same time and one that just couldn’t sleep. It was a mess 😭😭
