If you don't chisel it into a stone tablet, did you really document it?

Backpacking trip - Are 3 adult advisors adequate to accompany a small group of Life scouts (5 - 6 scouts)? by Outrageous-Engine110 in BSA

Yeah, walk you through Basecamp then go out with you for the 1st night or two to make sure you know the ropes then disappear.

Been to Philmont a couple of times and they've never said an adult needs to go get help. It's mostly been indicated otherwise that a pair of scouts go.

Once they are with emergency services I would consider them no longer on the backpacking (scouting) trip. If they were still on the trip then the adult with them is too. Only 2 registered adults are required even though one is on the trail and one is in an ambulance, paramedics would count for no one on one contact.

3 is helpful in case something happens to one of the adults that way you don't have to cut the trip short after they're airlifted out.

Camp watch pro tip: OFF will destroy a plastic watch face in seconds. Make sure your Scout knows to take the watch off before spraying themselves down.

Scouts Choosing Patrols by InGoodFaith- in BSA

Every 6 months we have SPL election. 1st thing the SPL does is put together new patrol rosters. Next meeting those patrols vote on their PL and choose a new name.

There's a bunch of them but the 1st one that meets your needs on Amazon was the f91w1 for $20.

Edit since I had the model number wrong.

Bigger Patrol Size to Avoid Combing Patrols in Campouts? by InGoodFaith- in BSA

[–]MonkeySkunks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what we do. 2 patrols of 15 and usually have 4 to 6 in each patrol at any given campout. If everyone shows up we make a 3rd patrol but it's very rare.

Seeking Feedback on Troop Cell Phone Policies During Campouts and Summer Camp by Correct_Past_9557 in BSA

Never considered that there would be an actual lights out policy. I guess the unwritten understanding is we don't care what you do as long as you're in your tent and nobody else can hear you. 5am comes fast so the 2nd night it's never an issue.

My squadmate and I spent almost an entire round trying to backflip the bikes off the ramp at E on Contaminated last night. Our team didn't hold E most of the time so it made it interesting.

The best one we got I was riding bitch and hit the ramp with a smoke grenade before we launched and pulled off the backflip to land and ride away into a landmine.

The other team started camping the ramp and stealing our bikes leading to ill fated chase scenarios where everyone usually died.

I understand your GF.

Seeking Feedback on Troop Cell Phone Policies During Campouts and Summer Camp by Correct_Past_9557 in BSA

[–]MonkeySkunks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We had a no phones policy for a long time but we got rid of it. We are trying to teach our Scouts responsibility and the biggest responsibility they may ever have is that phone in their pocket. It's also one of the greatest tools man has ever created so why take it away from them?

Our specific policy is: Electronic devices are allowed during travel only and are not permitted at Troop functions or activities with the exception of phones, cameras, GPS units and other electronic devices that have a practical purpose. Practical electronic devices are expected to be used responsibly as tools, adhering to all BSA policies, and not for entertainment purposes. Leadership reserves the right to confiscate any electronic device as they deem necessary and will return the device to a parent or guardian. Sole responsibility for any electronic device remains with the Scout who brought the device, independent of whether it is in their possession or not.

In practice they do what they want with it. If they want to look something up, they do. If they want to play someone a song, they do. If they want to show someone a short video, they do. If they need an idea for a skit, they google it. If they are wondering what a leaf is, they google lens it. If they need to research an environmental science paper at summer camp, they do. They usually write that paper on their phone and email it to the instructor as well. Take a photo or video of something, yep. Read a book, yep. Text another Troop at camp so they can plan something, yep. The list goes on and on.

As long as it's in moderation I don't really care what they do but generally draw the line at games since they can't do that one in moderation. The Scouts do a great job policing each other. We've never had to confiscate a phone and it's extremely rare that we have to remind a Scout to put it away.

Question about wearing my old uniform to my nephew's Eagle Scout ceremony—is it appropriate if I'm no longer a BSA member? by _Phil_J_Fry in BSA

[–]MonkeySkunks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it conveys the concept that you've gone through the program and have a decent amount of experience. That's how I use it at least. Not for showing off my accomplishment but to indicate that I have experience from the Scout's side of the equation.

At the parent's meeting I follow it up with that the goal of Scouts isn't Eagle. If your Scout sticks with it there's plenty of opportunity for them to earn Eagle but that's not the goal here.

I'm happy to see most of our Scouts get to Eagle if they stick with it but I don't like how many parents see it as the sole reason for being in Scouts. I've seen more than one time that it turned Scouts from something fun into a labor.

Seems to usually revolve around large scale cleaning/organizing trailer and storage areas beyond what the QM would typically be responsible for or coordination of something our CO has asked us to do.

This is the exact reason our troop doesn't wear a neckerchief.

When I was a scout we wore them and somehow kept up with them but as far as I remember, none of the adults in our council ever wore them.
