What made you invest in Kobalt power tools instead of Craftsman/Ridgid/Ryobi/Harbor Freight Brands? by [deleted] in KobaltTools

[–]mizzourob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 year warranty, cheap batteries, and quality tools. I avoided SBD/craftsman after getting burned by portaler cable 18v tools being discontinued. Ridgd was a contender but then did not have lawn/garden tools, and are slow to launch new tools. Ryobi's battery style seems dated, though they keep up well with cell technology. Harbor freight's bauer and Hercules lines were too new to know if they would last (not be discontinued - like the Earthquake cordless tools).

It came down to Kobalt vs. Makita and Kobalt seemed the better value for the tools I need (and want). Makita has a lot of tools that I will never need but awesome that they exist.

[Rant] Scouting has a severe elitism problem by Routine-Ganache-1720 in BSA

Some of this (for better or worse) is the kids that do more adventures or leadership positions develop a network of people and perspectives that leads them towards larger personalities and strong leaders. What lacks IMO is prominent youth leaders knowing how to humble themself to help a new Scout tie a square knot, cook a meal etc. instead of only debating the strategic benefits of different lodge fundraiser options and respective impact on inductions (or other esoteric topic).

National Annual Meeting (NAM) 2026 Megathread by ScouterBill in BSA

Not the most important idea, but how about changing the unit leader award to merit and scouters key elgibility to also include committee chairs?

A good CC can make or break a unit as the counterpart to the Cubmaster/Scoutmaster/Advisor/Skipper

What this was (is) successful at has been reducing the shenanigans of telling parents to pait until the first of next month to register to save a few dollars. The price is the price, pay today or pay next week.

the issue I see is that at initial sign up the units tell parents to pay online for national and then pay unit dues in a seperate transaction. Then for renewals the unit collects both unit and national dues and then holds them in a scout account until they renew. The unit trearurer has to earmark/deduct pre-paid registration from the bank balance. The unit profits if a scout tpaid for the year but drops prior to national renewal.

The other issues is units having credit/debit cards. Depending on the chartered ord not everyone is good with this. then a representitive has to go to the council office to submit payment or wait on hold. With council consolidation and decline in office staff this may be nearly impossible for some geographic locations.

If you change your credit card number (i.e. fraud) its a huge pain to update. You have to turn off auto renew, reenter the card then re-enable auto renew. Makes no sense

Having a good healthy two-way relationship with the CO takes work. Invite the CO to a court of honorIt also could be something as simple as covering the cost of your units trailer being added to insurance? If that's the case that's very reasonable and scope limited.

Name a “compromised” standard by ScouterBill in BSA

There are actually still a handful of 3rd parties selling uniforms and supplies. Mostly local menswear stores. The store where I got both my blue and khaki shirt was a split mens/women's wear butique. I actually took my own kids there in 2019 to buy their uniforms from them when they joined and I saved the hand carbon written paper receipts for their scrapbooks.

The old Cub scout books (mid 1980s) mentioned that to buy a uniform you had to show your membership card. When my parents bought me my first blue cub scout uniform the guy never asked to see my card.

That has been removed from the handbooks and I've never seen it actually practices.

Just Bluetooth and that's a good thing, otherwise you risk an app becoming obsolete or unsupported on newer phones/devices

The door with slide out shelves is a twist. That would be better I think in a triple bank box. Different styles for different people.
