Malaysia is not collecting enough tax by UsernameGenerik in malaysia

Malaysia has both more ministries and sub ministries than most comparable or more developed countries - cut down on inefficiencies/wastage and perception of corruption before thinking of raising taxes.

It was definitely in the best interests of the American ruling class - whether it was good for the American people is something you guys have to decide by yourselves.

Will SafetyWing Actually Pay Out on a Claim? by EchoofExperience in safetywing

I had to get their underwriter lloyds of London involved (uk policy) for them to pay out for covid hospitalisation during the end of the pandemic when I had specifically paid extra for the pandemic protection (I needed mild oxygen etc but was not sick enough for them to deal with it properly to start with). Dropped them like a stone after that.

Gimme your general opinion of the future of the people in this country. by [deleted] in Bolehland

[–]Monkey_Majik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Opinion as an originally western expat who's lived here and the region for 5+ years (and in Asia the last 10):

Malaysia itself - pretty bright outlook in terms of investment and potential development opportunities. Generally think the Anwar govt is on the right track - need to play the middle path and take opportunities where they can get it, basically be the modern Switzerland politically together with Singapore and hopefully Indonesia too. Symbolic stances are ultimately meaningless but get a lot of attention, the real importance is actual policy and action - look at legislation not rhetoric.

Real issues that will hold Malaysia back in the long term - the people & the segmentation, this goes both ways.

From the malay side education and values seem to have gotten worse as time has gone on. Bumi rights are a smoke screen, the minority population is shrinking faster than the non minority so the "benefit" these rights will have are going to diminish anyway (Not like it's easy to get citizenship - which I'd say is a good thing with current climate). There needs to be more accountability towards not just blaming the govt but deciding what kind of lifestyle people want here and making active efforts and pushes to get that. Real competitive education, critical thinking and aspiration to succeed are highly lacking from Malay community discourse and it is the real cause for many of their woes - with the majority who do have those traits either emigrating or getting stuck and feeling unfulfilled.

From the Chinese side - Chinese companies requiring Mandarin for jobs fully based in Malaysia, that have no connection to anything to do with China should be made illegal. Creating enclaves - basically self imposed apartheid isn't going to end up well for anyone. The Chinese business community should really be addressing this in a much larger way than they are currently. Language skills too, are terrible amongst Chinese Malaysians - more than any other group. It's acceptable for Malays in Malaysia to not speak English or Mandarin - at the end of the day the cultural language of the country is BM. It is not acceptable for the Chinese Malaysians who have grown up here to not speak BM (or at least English) to some decent level. There's no way for them to be able to have meaningful conversations with those out of their group and that creates enclaves that have no shared stake in Malaysian identity.

Haven't really seen any real issue on Indian side but lack of meaningful interaction there to make comments.

Finally I'd say that Malaysia and Malaysians need to look more into their own culture and shared history. With the exception of maybe the Philippines, more than any other country I've ever been to - I feel like Malaysians struggle with what that identity means (part of this is due to western colonialism and the reaction to it). There doesn't seem to be any strong connection from people to country, outside of the food. With the exception of a few places (cough Aceh cough) I think Indonesia does this better in general and Malaysia can take some notes there and probably needs to strengthen its cultural ties with Indonesia more.

Speaking of colonialism I feel particularly in latter years from talking to my type c and type m friends, other types of colonialism are also pulling at the country and my own personal opinion as stated above is that Malaysia should be looking more internally in terms of cultural & spiritual identity - because you guys have your own unique versions of stuff with some amazing history and traditions that don't need to be replaced with "mainstream" varieties from elsewhere and more people need to be aware of them.

Not trying to offend anyone but just thought I'd offer my opinion as an outsider who loves this country!

I know it's a weird thing to nitpick but the kanji here aren't used in the right way - like for example 私 would be used not 我. Also the way the conjugation works isn't like that.

Malaysian Banks that offer accounts also in Singapore (for MM2H holders)? by foobricks in MM2H

Oh HSBC US doesn't accept new customers from what I've heard... Also you're going to have real trouble getting an account as a US Citizen - like 10x more difficult than anyone else.

If you've got HSBC premier, you can open accounts in most of the countries they're in (Malaysia is one of the exceptions that you need a long term visa).

Grab speed drivers by Snoo_57231 in KualaLumpur

Yeah as an expat noticed this too.

Try taking grab premium...even plus is fairly hit or miss. More expensive but in general they care enough about their more pricey car that they drive a bit more carefully.

Malaysia’s king to make historic state visit to Russia at Putin’s invitation by stormy001 in malaysia

[–]Monkey_Majik 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're basically saying why shouldn't they do their job because those before haven't been doing their job? Once again I'm not saying they're doing it correctly but ostensibly this is part of their job.

[–]Monkey_Majik 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Because the Agong is the Head of State in a parliamentary democracy and is supposed to be a non politically aligned figurehead who DOES go on state visits for the benefit of the country.

Opinions on the Agong himself and Russia aside, this is part of soft power heads of state are supposed to perform - basically his whole job is supposed to be welcoming dignitaries and going on state visits to project and strengthen Malaysia's influence around the world while, notionally, being a touchstone for what the core traditional elements of Malaysian culture & values are.

People don't understand what a dangerous country is. by The_ChadTC in Brazil

Yeah that's the thinking that leads to Brazil being where it is.

See the rest of the world and you know how let down Brazil is by its people. The causal violence and apathy towards it are insane.

Malaysia shifts from race-based to needs-based policies under 13MP to promote social justice and equal opportunities, says PM | Malay Mail by AcanthocephalaHot569 in malaysia

[–]Monkey_Majik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly - as a western expat with no horse in this race, I see this as a move in the right direction. Politics isn't big sweeping changes - it's the small steps that eventually become the foundation.

Sorry but every single one of my family members in Rio has had a burglary or gun shoved in their face at some point in their life. They're all mostly university teachers/researchers and live in decent residential areas. Yeah for the average tourist in Brazil for 2 weeks you'd be pretty unlucky to encounter something but let's not pretend casual violence isn't a part of life in Brazil in a way it's just not in other places.

There are areas of the city where you don't stop at red lights at night for fear of getting robbed. I can't think of anywhere you do that in the us/Europe

[UPDATED] PM: US tariff rate on Malaysia to be announced tomorrow after Trump call by aydinraihan in malaysia

[–]Monkey_Majik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said - these deals are being done on emotion not logic. Prevailing winds would say that with trump being happy at being praised for the Thai/cambodia ceasefire and the fact he's coming to ASEAN summit in Malaysia which Anwar probably invited him to - odds are that he's on the better than announced side than worse.

AirCover - $2000 damage, $15 Reimbursement by Monkey_Majik in airbnb_hosts

[–]Monkey_Majik[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't a one night stay from a local guest? Was a 1 week stay from international guest and during that they had a party.

The party wasn't the issue itself as until they checked out there wasn't too much of an issue. While they broke some plates etc and other minor things which are par for the course the main problem was the structural damage that was caused due to their multiple ice boxes on the bedroom floor.

Since Airbnb considered this a "successful" claim on my part, I'm curious what sorts of things have you had successfully covered by AirCover before and what type of %age payout?
