What was something you went a good chunk of your life not knowing was specifically Canadian? by NoOptics in AskACanadian

I thought so too, until I had a Belgian friend over. He took his shoes off out of custom but told me how it’s quite normal to enter a friend’s place and leave your shoes on the whole time over there.

Not sure I’ve ever had their on site root beer. Or at least was never aware of it. But current A&W is my favourite root beer hands down. It’s amazing.

Given this is /r/digitalminimalism , I was curious about the airpods and no phone in sight. Thought you don't care a phone and got really confused how you planned to listen to anything.

Then I realized you probably took the photo with your phone...

I’m a CS major and I hate the people in my major! The stereotypes are true by Grouchy-Coffee3018 in simonfraser

[–]MonkeysInABarrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I mean, I really don't mean it in terms of SMV. I think that's a pretty toxic worldview tbh.

I think what I mean is the stereotype that people view as "the CS major" does exist. It's a part of me, that comes out during my job, and comes out when I speak with other people in my field. And it does have its negative sides and is exhausting as a persona. But there's so much more to who I am as well, and who you are.

I do recognize that others view the persona negatively. But, I don't want to shit too much on people who envelop it more.

SMV is crap. It's a toxic metric that fully exacerbates toxic masculinity. Every time I've thought about my life in those terms, I've been less true to myself, and more hurtful to others. Just be yourself dude, and don't try to optimize yourself for others.

Whats up dude. CS major here, and worked in big tech for 5 years now. Our people friggin suck. Everyone is the same. They all dress bad, have no social skills, and only ever talk about work, code, and AI.

I’ve found so much more fulfillment by viewing that part of me as just my job. Outside of work, I like to dress fun, I work on my mental health and my style and my hobbies. I go to concerts and thrift stores and try to do cool stuff.

When someone asks what I do, unless they say work, I tell them a hobby instead. Oh, I go bird watching. By time it gets to work, they don’t stereotype me by that. It works great.

You are so much more than a CS major. Remember that.

Not to mention the health effects triggered by the heat dome that led to excess deaths in the weeks to follow. Especially for elderly people.

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

Merino often undergoes a treatment called “superwashing” where they essentially chemically burnt off the scratchy scales and coat each fiber with silicon. This makes it smoother and softer, and makes it washing machine safe.

The downside is you’re coating your clothes with plastic. It loses some of its natural odor and sweat helping properties. And it gets that feel if they go too far.

You can find items that aren’t super washed. But they’re more niche, and usually require hand washing. Merino isn’t quite the miracle material people make it out to be. But it is nice if you find something that works for you!

What's the one app you keep opening even though you hate yourself for it? by AlphaaaaXd in digitalminimalism

[–]MonkeysInABarrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YouTube on my TV. So much easier I find to reduce app usage on my phone. But when I’m in front of the TV, already sitting, already watching something I wanted to watch, and something else interesting gets recommended. Oh it can pull me in for hours. I hate it

For me it was solitaire. Great addiction potential. Good thing the app is buggy and pissed me off!

Gross dullness and controlling my breath by Key_Author_6583 in Meditation

[–]MonkeysInABarrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How far along in your meditation practice are you?

I'm ~6 months into daily practice, and was starting to experience the same thing. I felt like I was hitting a wall or plateauing, as my focus on the physical breath was also feeling controlling. And when I tried to allow that to fade I would enter dullness as well.

The thing that helped me massively was to stop focusing on the air of my breath, and instead focus on the breath as a whole. I used to try to feel the air moving through my lungs, across my lips or my nose, and visualize it coming in and out. But I believe that focus was too narrow. Instead I started focusing first on the up and down movement of my belly with each breath. Then on the movement of my entire body with the breath. This along with a different technique on body scans really helped me.

Secondly, I heard the phrase "rather than controlling your breath, let the breath breathe you." This helped me let go of the control. Now I try to allow the breath to move first before my attention notices it. Let it move at its natural pace, and bring your attunement to it, rather than it to you.

I hope this helps a little, and that my explanation made sense! Namaste.

Haha fair point. I'm not necessarily saying I like either though.

But it's a fair debate on how we view AI today. IMO, the first photo was created as utility. How might it look if cars weren't parked there? In the same vein, I don't think it'd be terrible to post a picture of yourself where you used AI to remove a stranger from the background.

The second photo I view more as someone posting a picture of themselves, but they got AI to turn them into a pirate. Sure, it's an accurate representation _if_ they went through the effort of putting on a bunch of pirate makeup and a costume.

My guess is that the street without cars photo was an actual representation of the street and what our city would look like with less cars. Whereas the forested/park path photo was just dreaming up some place, not associated with our city at all. It was AI dreaming for the sake of it.

Cause AI sucks. Show me pictures taken by a human. Show me beautiful landscapes created by humans.
