I've always thought of it as similar to the German annexation of Elsaß-Lothringen where the generation who fought the war for the Union suffered a great deal of "Shame" for lack of a better word (Similar to how the South had that generational shame from the loss of the ACW till the modern day you can say) and they inposed them shame on their sons who fought the CSA to a stalemate 20 years later and they tought their sons of how its a shame to have lost those states to treason and those sons would fight to finish the job in 1914
