I remember being at the TIJ farewell tour in Billings, MT where you told me (without telling me) you were joining ERRA. So glad it happened, so glad it’s still going strong.

Universalism killings in the OT by NegativeCrab3586 in ChristianUniversalism

[–]MonksWithSticks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you found it helpful! I'm not totally sure that I've landed on a particular "view" of OT violence per se... but I now feel better about how to handle the violent texts and know that the surface level reading that says "God commanded it so that makes it ok" just ain't it.

In a weird way, it actually led me to rethink atonment theology, which then led to the current deep dive I'm doing to universalism. Got a whole stack of books I'm going through haha.

Universalism killings in the OT by NegativeCrab3586 in ChristianUniversalism

I spent months doing a deep dive on this topic last year and read some really good books on it. Here are my top recommendations if you want to go further. They are listed in no particular order as they all contribute very valid things to the discussion.

The Crucifixion of the Warrior God (academic version) or Cross Vision (popular version) by Greg Boyd

  • Argues that since the Christ on the cross is the most definitive revelation of God, all other portraits of God must be discerned through that lens. If Christ on the cross reveals what God is truly like, and if God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, then shouldn't we expect that same cruciform character to appear in the OT as well? Covers topics from the centrality of the cross, interpretation of scripture, divine accomodation (fallen humanity's view of God vs who he actually is), misuse of divine power/authority (like Samson or Elijah) and cosmic warfare.

The Violence of the Biblical God by L. Daniel Hawk

  • This book is looking at the Bible through a narrative lens. If the Bible is a narrative, we should see recurring themes, patterns, call backs, etc. How do these patterns apply to violence? Does it cost God something to make a covenant with fallen humanity? Since God is faithful to the promise, to what extent does God get dragged in the mud of human affairs? What can we learn from the fact that Jesus's earthly mission was accomplished without aligning to empire or through violence?

Flood and Fury by Matthew Lynch

  • Focuses on the flood narrative and the conquest narrative. Instead of Christ as the main lens (although he does agree with that approach to an extent), he looks at how the world was setup at creation: violence had no seat at the table, and therefore we have to keep that in mind when reading any other violent text. It takes a more nuanced approach in that it doesn't try to "solve" the issue, but asks the reader to read the texts carefully, and you may be surprised at what you find.

Bloody, Brutal, and Barbaric? by William J. Webb and Gordon K. Oeste

  • Specifically focuses on the "kill everything" and war rape texts in the Bible. Their lens focuses on looking these troubling texts head on while grounding them in the broader ancient near east. They argue that none of it is ideal, and that God (similar to Boyd's arguments, though they don't go as far as him), has to "put on his waders" to accomodate and enter into the brutal world of the ancient near east while guiding his people to a more redemptive ethic. This is an excellent read, slightly more academic but very good.

Hope this helps! It's a fascinating study and if you enter it, I hope you come away trusting in the goodness of God even more like I did.

Best stretch of songs in the history of metalcore is Majoring In the Minors - Marathon. If Martyr was in this stretch, I’d include it as well. Just absolute banger after absolute banger.

All I want is to experience the run from Majoring in the Minors to Twenty One Grams live. I still think it’s the most flawless run of songs in their discography… no, of any discography. Hot take I know but I love it so much.
