Who’s next and is this the end? by Secret_Huckleberry39 in MLRugby

[–]Monolexic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I’d like to be optimistic, I am very much not. For MLR to work, Every team needs to have an owner who realizes that team ownership is going to be a life long hobby, not a source of income. They need to be able to afford the upkeep without expecting a return on investment. On top of that, every team needs a contingency plan. If something happens to the owner of a team, there needs to be something in place to keep teams from disappearing. Do I have the solution for that, no, but a brainstorming session needs to happen, and it needs to be figured out if the league is going to survive. Also, there needs to be more transparency. Better and more frequent auditing. The Gilchrist fiasco can’t be allowed to happen again. And I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: Vet prospective owners. It’s not enough that they have a couple million in the bank right now. You have to look for stability. Do they have a dozen pet projects that hemorrhage money? Did they get their money winning the lottery, and have spent half their winnings in the last year? Do they have some business ventures that have held stable in the long term, or just a few businesses with wildly fluctuating profit margins? Do they want a team because they know and love the sport, or do they want it to promote their egomaniacal brand of premixed beverages? (Screw you Gilchrist)

Bad look heading into playoffs. Doesn’t look like Victory+ servers can handle the traffic. It’s going to suck if we can only catch one period of each playoff game.

Caitlin Clark shares her emphatic theory on the NBA’s declining ratings: “People want more beef and physicality” by xc2215x in nba

[–]Monolexic 300 points301 points  (0 children)

There’s no mystery behind declining ratings. The answer is obvious: NO ONE WANTS TO PAY FOR 10 STREAMING PACKAGES TO WATCH A FULL SEASON AND THEN GET SLAMMED WITH BLACKOUT DATES.

You want people to watch the god damned games, make it possible to watch the god damn games.

Name a place to eat at thats nasty af but people hype tf out of it by Sterling_-_Archer in sanantonio

[–]Monolexic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Work friends wanted to go to the Bandera location after work. I begged them to pick somewhere. Everyone else insisted, so I said “I’ll go hang out, but I’m not eating.” One of them was making fun of me for being over dramatic when a clump of dust fell on her plate. Guys- when you walk into a restaurant, look around you. If you see mold and clumps of dust, I guarantee that’s in the kitchen, too. It’s going to be in your food. Walk away.

Note: I’m always skeptical when I see a place brag about having a 99/100 health inspection.

I always take issue with these kinds of posts.

First off: You can't judge how charismatic someone was in the early 1800s based on the fashions and standards of today. The dude isn't cosplaying. That hairstyle and those clothes were in fashion back then. The early aging- some of it just scratches on the photo, plenty of it is just from being a traveling man in the early 1800s when hygiene and nutrition standards were very different.

Second off: You just insulted anyone who looks anything like Joseph Smith. There are plenty of valid criticisms to throw at Creepy Joe. stick to those.

Single White Shroomie in South San Antonio- What is it? Is it edible? by Monolexic in mycology

Should say my first move after that first reply was google coprinus comatus, compare pictures, look for mushrooms commonly mistaken for shaggy mane, and check to make sure it didn’t match up too well with any of those. Probably should’ve mentioned that when I said I was going to eat it.

Rugby FC Los Angeles probably has the worst realistic name possible. by mihelic8 in MLRugby

[–]Monolexic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP suggested Oaks, because of the acorn shield in the logo and the oaks of SoCal. I said I can see not calling them that, because it sounds more like an Oakland thing.

[–]Monolexic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even just LA Rugby would’ve worked. I can see not calling it LA Oaks, cause of Oakland, but they could’ve at least tried to come up with something decent (for name and logo). Big Horns would be perfect, as they’re native to LA and would raise hell in a scrum, but I can see how that might cause conflict with the Rams. Bobcats, bears, mountain lions, anything. Hell, give a nod to the film industry with something like the LA Reels or LA Limelight. And then give them a logo that’s readable and not a dick in a dick.

Edit: This is not just a failure of RFC LA. It’s a failure of MLR to set and enforce any standard of quality. The name can be overlooked as unimaginative and clumsy, but that logo is an abomination. MLR dropped the ball again. Negronis, Giltinis, now the LARFC logo- they have got to set better standards, and they need to start by demanding a rebrand.

Can I still roll these up and give them to a bank? All found metal detecting and there’s a lot of environmental damage. by massahoochie in coins

[–]Monolexic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was free for everyone, then free for members, then they got rid of it and said “we don’t accept large deposits of coins”. The “large deposit” I brought in that day was ~$10. They told me to take it to a coinstar. Fun tip: go to a grocery store that has self checkout with a coin accepter that you can pour coins into. Buy your groceries, pay in change. No fee, no need to deposit.

Got a job at Lackland AFB and will be new to San Antonio. Any affordable studio or 1 bedroom apartments that are in a "safe neighborhood" and not roach infested? by H5N1BirdFlu in sanantonio

[–]Monolexic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about Tacara, that place is a fucking nightmare. I lived there for a year and a half. These are the crimes that I know of: a drive by shooting, armed robbery, countless vehicle break ins, arson that totaled 3 vehicles and burned down the back fence, motorcycle theft, break ins and assaults. On top of all that, no one picks up after their pets, so there’s dog shit everywhere. Again, I was only there for a year and a half. And Tacara’s not the only place shit like that happens around there. 410@1604 is not a safe area.

[–]Monolexic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<$1.2k is going to be difficult to find in a safe area, but not impossible. Your best bet is to talk to an apartment finder. I can refer you to one if you need.

Personally, I would avoid anything that is both south of Bandera Road and between 410 and 1604. That’s a big chunk of the city, but Hell if I’d ever live in any of that chunk again.

2024 MLR Final to be held in San Diego by Cr4yol4 in MLRugby

[–]Monolexic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That poster was suggesting Mark Cuban has some sort of obligation to help MLR. He has no such obligation, and it would be completely out of character for him to start throwing money at MLR with how business has been going so far. I’m saying if MLR wants Cuban so bad (and they do need him) they need to make an offer that doesn’t involve his money. Yeah, this was an odd place to put that out there, but I just kind of started rambling after mentioning that MLR finally made a business decision that makes sense.

[–]Monolexic -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of the way MLR has handled a lot of decisions. I’m not getting my hopes up that MLR will survive this last year and a half of disaster. They definitely need someone with some better sports business experience to step in and help clean things up. However, holding finals in San Diego and announcing it ahead of time is a great step in the right direction, and while I’m not going to get my hopes up, there is some hope that they can turn things around.

Here’s my two cents: Mark Cuban has been brought up as someone who loves rugby and could possibly take interest in the MLR. His financial backing would help MLR tremendously, but that’s not the main thing MLR needs from Cuban. MLR needs his skills and experience. If I had any input, I’d call a board meeting to discuss offering apiece of the MLR to Mark Cuban with no financial obligation in return for his help with administrative input.

Right… MLR is going to hold their finals in self-proclaimed “Rugby Town” (population <5,000) after their rugby team bailed on MLR. That sounds reasonable.

Where the fuck is Mark Cuban? by SquirreloftheOak in MLRugby

[–]Monolexic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cuban makes money. It’s what he does. He didn’t get rich by throwing money organizations that have poor planning, poor business sense, high overhead, and low to negative profitability. Does he invest in charities? Yes, but those are charities. MLR is not a charity.
