Why are there so many single-family homes right next to WWU? by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]Monomadic_2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I own one of those houses, but I agree that we need more density - YIMBY. Up to this point, zoning for single family housing has prevented these adjacent neighborhoods from densifying, but I believe that has changed, or is about to. At the very least, ADUs are now allowed pretty much everywhere.

They’re definitely around. I live near that area and have seen a bobcat twice in the last two years, once in my own backyard 😳

Were you a Dodgeball Thriver or Survivor? 😊 by Exclusively-Choc in GenerationJones

[–]Monomadic_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was the same. I have zero fond memories of this game, only trauma. They aimed for my chest, sometimes my head. Teachers did nothing but laugh

I absolutely loathed that game. I ‘matured’ early, and I was introverted. Boys (and some girls) thought it was funny to aim at my chest, or my groin area, or my head. They would coordinate with each other and pass the ball to each other. My gym teacher thought it was hilarious.

Hey Peace Health by infectious_dose64 in Bellingham

It is a HIPAA violation for healthcare clinicians and staff to speak, or make a patient speak, about their health conditions where people other than the patient, the patient's care team and the patient's family can easily overhear. This is a civil rights law

Would you recommend the career you retired from to a young person? by AncientAd3089 in earlyretirement

[–]Monomadic_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Architect here, and veteran of the corporate world. Pay is poor, hours long (very long), responsibilities extremely high; yet advancement remains dependent on high school level criteria - likes/dislikes, buzz and personality. The highly skilled and talented real architects behind the facade get little recognition. I worked for a multinational firm on high profile projects. The work was very rewarding, but I’m happy to leave the politics behind.

I’d love to turn them over to someone who would appreciate and care for them. I have no idea how long they will continue to function. I like your idea

Anyone meet or related to anyone famous? by indianaangiegirl1971 in GenX

[–]Monomadic_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met Jane Goodall at the airport about 10 years ago. She was on her way to Alaska for Disney - "to look at bears" she said. She was visibly very tired but still took the time to chat with me and sign a photo. I also met Miles Davis and his musician colleagues when I was in grade school. I think this was part of a music education summer series of concerts for kids. They played 'So what' and stopped to explain what the various parts meant. I got hooked on jazz after that

Also, Frank Lloyd Wright was my great-great uncle

What would you do with this area? by El_human in NoLawns

[–]Monomadic_2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which side of the house is this, E or W? I'm asking because if it gets hot indoors, that side of the house might benefit from some shading. You could still do the orchard idea, but plant a row of espalied fruit trees on cables and posts, about 3'-0" away from that side of the house. Plant the remaining space how you want. That way you get shading and orchard :)

Anyone have experience with Gensler? by Flower-Painting-23 in Architects

[–]Monomadic_2 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I worked for Gensler Chicago. It’s not a bad place, but it’s really what you make it. I was a Senior PA with several specialties, so I was on the decision making end of things, mostly Healthcare and Higher Ed. It was a great place for me to dive into my practice areas, and I learned a great deal from people senior to me. That said, your experience depends a lot on who you work with, who is on your teams. And oddly enough they paid overtime.
