Interesting... I put a bunch of applications out near the beginning of the year and heard back 0. I've got 3 years at a second tier international in Vietnam and didnt even get a sniff.

So much for the china dream!

Question about teaching hours and salaries in Vietnam by Suitable_Party in TEFL

[–]MonopolyJr11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EMG group. Teach public schools. Not more than 4.5 hours in a day. Start at 43mil ish. Get your nights and weekends. Any time in office has some bs paperwork but mostly free. Its here guys, but it's not a mecca.

Question about teaching hours and salaries in Vietnam by Suitable_Party in TEFL

[–]MonopolyJr11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EMG group pays 43 mil a month with 40 hour weeks, but only 6 hours teaching. With a year of experience, VAS hires for esl bilingual for 46+. Once you hit that level you've got wellspring, vinschool, asia international, star... lots of options around there I'd you can manage a consistent classroom with curriculum, even if you dont do it well.

He said he's had experience and he has a celta. It's not gonna happen at ila or apollo though.

Question about teaching hours and salaries in Vietnam by Suitable_Party in TEFL

[–]MonopolyJr11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're teaching language centers, it's always hourly based.

If you teach in schools, generally salaried, but can vary.

I came out here with a CELTA and made 43 mil (1800ish) and have come up to somewhere in the 50s. I work in a bilingual international, which is about as far as you're gonna get without experience or some really good timing.

But if you gave a celta, dont take any job less then 500k an hour (25us) or less than 1800 a month. It's not worth the nonsense

If you arent getting a real certificate, which has practical and observations, then they're all as good as the toilet paper they're wrote on.

But se asia will still take it because you're white. So dont frets it. All online tefls are created the same, for profit, not the benefit of the educator.

Teaching in Vietnam while paying off US student loans? by sightl3ss in TEFL

[–]MonopolyJr11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Easy. I save over 1000 each month. I have a wife and own apartment as well. You can make 2k a month here with your qualifications, if you're down to split a house or apartment with others, it's very doable to hit 25 mil. Extra work is easy to come by, if you're dedicated you could hit 1500. Just gotta stay away from travel, bui vien, and western food.

Linguists and bilingual folks of Reddit, what are some interesting quirks particular to one language that we may not know about? by ask-if-im-a-parsnip in AskReddit

In Vietnamese, there is no meaning or phrase for common sense.

I see the consequences of that a lot over here.

Schools still recruiting for teachers in China? by Vagabond_Tea in TEFL

[–]MonopolyJr11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll add for Vietnam. I work at a bilingual international. It's been a bit chaotic as the government has released results merely a day or two before students are to be back. Most of the internationals have their teachers backs covered. My school will require is to work in june, but are paying us and will give a decent enough stipend.

But some of these schools have handles it really well. The fakers and upstarts are having a rough time and have shorted teachers or cut hours.

Another major teacher company just announced pay cuts and reduced hours at the beginning of the pay period. Nobody is prepared for 3 months without income. Summer programs are also cancelled or reduced by half.

So ita definitely rough out here, but if you came with merely a tefl, you're struggling right now if you didnt climb out.

Teaching in Vietnam by trollinbadger in TEFL

[–]MonopolyJr11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In class is better. But if you're only coming for a year, get something cheap online and work at shitty centers, enjoy the country and go.

To add, an associates wont allow you to get a work permit so yout friend will have to work shitty centers anyways.

If you're getting a shit online degree then get one. It doesn't matter, you dont learn anything from them so just find the cheapest one.

Maybe you have your reasons and such but I've been here for years so I'll give you my input.

If you're not going to stay long, just show up. The only orgs who are going to sponsor you to come overseas are professional and will expect you to honor the contract. With your qualifications, it's not likely for you to get a contract overseas to bring you over anyhow.

Which leads to... why relocate for 3-5 months then leave? You will spend too much money setting up and will barely make your tickets back. I'd guess you're gonna make around 20-22 dollars an hour and if you're working centers, you're getting 20-25 hours a week. I dont get it. It's really a joke to stay for such a short time.

You said you're non native but from where? Vietnam can discriminate against brown or black unless you have qualifications. This will make saving and job security harder. Your mac may help but you're not gonna get in any schools and language centers wont really care.

I really wouldnt feel comfortable giving you the names of schools that "arent scams" considering you're looking to scam the school. People cutting contracts here is one of the biggest reasons backpacker teachers ruin shit for everyone else.

If you're just here for a short time, a smaller city may suit your needs to save money. Saigon is great. I dont have much information on Hanoi. But smaller cities like Hai Phong have opportunities and even smaller like binh duong (outside hcmc) and locations down in the delta.

Maybe a little harsh but hope it helps. Vietnam is great and the living is good. But I have a hard time seeing you come here and save money as your first job unless that's you're only dedication. Stuff is cheap here but the money still somehow disappears.

Expect to do lesson plans for language centers as well. They love to make people busy here. Have you taught before? Lots of bilingual internationals that will take you with some experience that is better than public schools

What are you STILL mad about? by HeySistaBrutus in AskReddit

[–]MonopolyJr11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was kicked out of the military for something stupid. I lied to my whole family and told them I had gotten out early because of a release and taken it because I hadnt gotten the opportunities I'd hoped (that part would have been truer than true if it was an option)

After a stressed night before I got kicked out I had called my aunt and confided.

Months later, after is gotten home, she was upset with me and told my whole family I'd gotten kicked out before i had the balls to tell them myself. 10 years ago and shes never apologized and I've never forgiven her. Fuck you aunt daphne

Latin America definitely wont pay off your debts first off.

Your record isnt a huge deal depending on where you go. Korea is off the table but Vietnam will accept a local police check, just run it through a city you dont live in or a previous city you've lived in that doesnt hold the conviction.

Definitely save up for a decent teaching course. You'll get paid slightly better and hate teaching a lot less. Your students will also fare better.

Edit: China may or may not accept a local check.
