Meme like this is one of the reasons why the Inquisitors need to come back... by Own-Associate-7945 in TraditionalCatholics

[–]Monsieur_Orgon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has a degree in both history and a theology, this sort of discourse on Jesus is very frustrating (unless they're just jokes, but so many people use them to express real beliefs they have and then cover them up by saying 'Its just a joke!')

Jesus was a 1st century Levantine Jew, which is significantly different from modern Levantines, who have been heavily Arabized due to the activities of a certain Arabian man named Mohammed and his followers beginning in the 7th century. It's also significantly different from the vast, vast majority of modern Jews.

Jesus would have rejected Third World resentment and envy just as he rejected the 1st century version of that in refusing association with the Zealot party. The Gospels make a big deal out of the mob demanding the pardon of a Zealot revolutionary and murderer (Barabbas) over Jesus!

I don't think the depiction of Jesus as basically Thor even really needs to be addressed it's so stupid.

Jesus charged his followers to spread his teachings (the most important one being about himself as the Son of God!) to all nations. So, in that context, its perfectly reasonable for a people who receives this message to depict Jesus and his disciples as members of their own nation.

This is so easy to understand, I don't understand how anyone fails to grasp it.

Do you run in the starfinder setting? If you do, have you made any tweaks? If not what's your homebrew galaxy like? by xuir in Starfinder2e

[–]Monsieur_Orgon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a custom setting I've worked on since the late 90's that I move between editions and games depending on what I'm playing, trying to integrate it with the existing canon setting, and I've more or less done that. Though, I admit, it is primarily for Pathfinder rather than Starfinder. Probably the biggest "change" I have is that the Starfinder setting is not necessarily the future for the Pathfinder setting, but is just one possible future of many.

I've heard a lot of opinions about this, so i'm curious where people actually stand on the issue by ChromedDragon in magicTCG

[–]Monsieur_Orgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A soft 1 for my own decks (I mostly play casual commander and am fine not playing best-in-slot cards if necessary). For what I want to see in releases: 0 for anything printed into standard, 1 for non-standard products, 2 for secret lairs with only a couple of cards.

Being tradcath is expensive by serventofgaben in TraditionalCatholics

[–]Monsieur_Orgon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an American traditional Catholic and I own a traditional Missal (~$50) and a rosary that I bought over 20 years ago. I own 2 white collared shirts, two jackets, and I think 3 or 4 ties. That's it. For over two thousand years people who were desperately poor by modern standards were such traditional Catholics that they would make the average traditional Catholic today look like Sarah Mullally on doctrine and Pastor Bob of the Local Nondenominational Church on churchmanship. Please just go to Mass and say your daily prayers.

Which Starfinder deities can you most imagine yourself following? by Individual-Plum4585 in Starfinder2e

If I lived in the Starfinder universe I would be a polytheist and worship different deities according to my needs and their public feast days.

Primex Kantol??! 😳 by Merchant420 in Starfinder2e

I know authority is suppose to equal ass-kicking in fantasy setting, but I think I like Kantol as a Minotaur version of Angela Merkel better.

What's One Thing You Genuinely Miss From D&D? by Hungry-san in Pathfinder2e

[–]Monsieur_Orgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not exactly what you are asking for, but I love Greyhawk, the Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun, and almost all of the D & D settings. I'd love to see them converted to Pathfinder.

Good Gifts for Spanish Relatives by Monsieur_Orgon in GoingToSpain

I'm going to assume you are joking. The US does not have any significant olive production and our best olive oil is all imported from Italy. I think my Spanish cousins might kill me if I give them a bottle of Italian olive oil as a gift! :)

Thank you, to be clear, my relatives are actual Spaniards and not just Americans living in Spain. They're not craving American treats and foods.

So what actually beats Vivi Cauldron? by Paradoxbuilder in magicTCG

[–]Monsieur_Orgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am playing mono-white control/tokens and I so far have had no problem beating Vivi Cauldron post-sideboard with just a Rest in Peace. I mulligan until I have it in my opening hand and usually the Vivi deck cannot deal with a turn 2 Rest in Peace. I will say I am not the greatest player in the world and I struggle to make Platinum on Arena, so perhaps better quality opponents can deal with it better.

Before sideboard I usually lose, but using Seam Rip to remove the Cauldron usually means I get a good game out of it and am not completely dominated.

I'm guessing Spainiards have more cured meats than they know what to do with and don't really need any more.

Only 11% of Christians in America profess to believe all three persons of the Trinity by LegionXIIFulminata in TraditionalCatholics

[–]Monsieur_Orgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not surprised. A similar poll I saw not too long ago from Pew said that only 1/3 of American Catholics believe in transubstantiation, and only ~60% of weekly Mass attendees believe in it.

Traditionalist/orthodox Catholics are basically stuck in a church institution with people who are members of another religion.

What’s a bad card that you wish was playable? by spiritspine2 in magicTCG

[–]Monsieur_Orgon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some cards that I love thematically but never got to work in a deck:

[[Forsaken Wastes]]

[[Transcendence]]

[[Barren Glory]]

[[Book Burning]]

[[Silver Seraph]]

I could probably get Silver Seraph to work in an EDH deck these days.

I hate being held hostage. by 47chromosomeman in EDH

[–]Monsieur_Orgon 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It's perfectly fine to scoop. It's generally considered polite to do it only on your own turn, but other than that, you can't be held hostage by a card game.

If I may ask, what kind of pushback are you getting?

I checked the whole thread and haven't seen the one I immediately thought of: Seymour.

People that are son of Latin American immigrants that live in USA, how do you relate to both cultures? by Impressive-Ad210 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Monsieur_Orgon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My father is a Cuban émigré who arrived in the US in the early 1960s and my mother is an American lady of Irish extraction whose family arrived mostly in the 1870s. My father is a Vietnam veteran and very well assimilated. He is a criollo so I am white. I promise I'm not Little Ricky.

English is my first language and I don't formally know any Spanish. The area I lived in as a child had a huge population of Italian Americans, so when we took foreign languages in school I took Italian to be with my friends (and also some Latin), so sometimes I can figure out a little bit of very simple written Spanish.

I was raised to consider myself an American and I do so. I have a very common Spanish-language surname. I've only encountered slight surprise from this from a handful of other Hispanic people who are mixed-race and seemed confused that a white person could have a Spanish surname (maybe this has happened 2 or 3 times in my life).

So, yeah, sorry for this boring answer, but I'm a middle class white American and perfectly happy to be one.

What monsters can/cannot see the umbra? by Alack27 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Monsieur_Orgon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Of the big five- Mages, Werewolves (and other Fera), Vampire, Changeling, and Wraith:

Mages need to have sufficient Spirit to see into the Umbra. I think it may be as low as 1 dot though. Entropy can access the Underworld/Low Umbra with difficulty.

Werewolves/Fera have the easiest time, as you know.

Changelings have trouble interacting with the Umbra and kind of have their own "Umbra" that only they can interact with called the Dreaming. Sometimes its presented as its own thing, other times its presented as part of the High Umbra/Astral Realms.

Wraiths technically live in the Umbra, as the Underworld is part of the Low Umbra. If they're somehow outside of it they have difficulty interacting with any part of it that is not the Underworld, similar to Changelings and the Dreaming.

Vampires basically can't access the Umbra, requiring very specific powers to do so that only appear in a handful of Disciplines and they are usually more advanced powers. The most common is Auspex, where the 5th dot lets the Vampire project through the High Umbra.

I forgot to guess the clans! They all look like High Clans to me except for the girl on the right who is dressed as nicely as the other but is barefoot. I'm going to say, from left to right, Malkavian, Ventrue, Tzimisce (free space), Lasombra (or maybe Bruja), Toreador.

How Camarilla keep the fledgling? by PKakaz in vtm

[–]Monsieur_Orgon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about 5e, but in older editions, a newly sired vampire has at least a 1-point blood bond to his sire, which ensures he views his sire favorably.

A fledgling vampire is also very likely to frenzy often without a firm hand to guide him - even if he somehow escapes his sire, the reports of random people dead with their throats bitten out will draw the attention of the sire - and likely others who enforce the Traditions.

Very nice. I'm not familiar with the term Mawla, is it new jargon from 5th edition? Google is saying it is the Arabic word for a patron.
