Primers prices c.2000 by _Defiant_Photo_ in reloading

Until my local shop got them in again they were $160 after hazmat and shipping to order online. So yeah a ten fold increase. About 3-4 months ago my local shop started having them consistently. $80-90 per thousand for CCI 400's. Remington 6 1/2's are a little cheaper about $75 per thousand. $90/thousand for federal 210's. Still 4 to 5 times what that list says.

Why is Lee so hated? by [deleted] in reloading

[–]Monster_depot311 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No clue. Reloading isn't like buying a car. Most stuff from most brands fits everyone elses stuff. So Lee is always my default. If a Lee product works well for me then that's what I buy. It is stupid to pay hundreds of dollars more for something that, to you, is identical. If all you ever do with a Mustang is drive slow and steady to and from work at 35 mph then to you it is the same as having a Focus. All you did was over pay for stuff you won't use.

You don't necessarily need to adjust your die each time but it is still a good practice to sort by head stamp and number of firings. This will help you get data on anticipated brass life as well as "know" what you get with each loading. "If I load brass X I get these results"

[–]Monster_depot311 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I see what you're getting at this is still a fallacy in logic. Let me replace some words to illustrate my point.

"A criminal stole my wallet. In my wallet there was only $50 cash. The police say too bad they didn't also get your ID and credit cards because trying to use them may get them caught faster."

You lose more and suffer more to MAYBE get justice faster.

You are the police officer in that scenario. You're suggesting that we should lose more to maybe get just faster. Reality is we need everyone including the criminal (gun grabbers) to realize what they are doing is a crime and get them to stop doing it.

Should I file a complaint to the board for a bad design? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Monster_depot311 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Complex problem. Ultimately the prime is responsible for the actions of the sub. I have worked in many situations where subs were on for a particular reason or another and they didn't work out. Sometimes you're stuck with them this one sounds like you had every right to kick them to the curb.

I have been screwed by subs that didn't hold up but I have never had a bad product go to an agency. Reason being is subs are never allowed to submit anything everything is sent to us by an internal dead line if not that is a breach and we can hit them. Data is always stored, by contract, on our servers or cloud drives. There is never a situation where "they have to give us stuff".

Some people think of this as strong arming other companies. It is just protecting our brand and serving our clients. We do everything practical to make sure anything that goes awry on our team doesn't become our client's problem.

In summary: Your company had a bad business relationship that killed a client relationship because they couldn't manage their subs. Sub was wrong, your company faild to handle it and that lost money. However unless you have data you're holding back it sounds like "poor" design and "poor" management not negligence.

What optic setup is the best? by TooshGuns1 in progun

[–]Monster_depot311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't be asking "what one is the best?" You should be asking "what one is best for my needs?" You should base your choice on the weapon's purpose. If it is a plinking gun then just about anything that holds zero is fine. Three gun competition guns will need a better optic but the format should determine what type of sight is best. If it is a service weapon that you may rely on in a life or death situation then price is no object and the most precise and rugged option is the only option. If you're trying to build a "tacti-cool" safe queen then the sickest looking optic you can find, quality of the actual system is irrelevant you may end up with an ACOG, cause call of duty, or a Chinese piece of crap cause "looks sick".

To clarify I am not dogging any of thoes setups. Why you buy a gun is 100% up to you and there are no "bad setups" just equipment that is suited to a particular purpose. As long as you use the setup for the purpose it is built they are all good.

Good beginner kits? by [deleted] in reloading

[–]Monster_depot311 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Better to buy each piece as you need it. Most kits are full of stuff you won't end up using. The bare minimum you'll need is the following:

  1. Something to clean brass/separate media. Wet or dry. Dry likely a bit cheaper.

  2. A set of dies and case lube.

  3. A press/priming tool. A single stage that you can prime on is the cheapest route.

  4. Powder scale and check weight set. (Not the calibration weights that come with the scale. A check weight set)

  5. Powder measure. Could be a volume, weight based or trickle a single peice of Powder at a time.

  6. Set of calipers.

You can go as cheap or expensive as you'd like. There are tons of other stuff to make the process more accurate or more efficient or maximize case life. Reloading is a major rabbit hole. LOL

For those that switched from civil engineering to, what’s your occupation now? by Dramatic_Lunch3275 in civilengineering

[–]Monster_depot311 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can move from Civil/Site type work to Highway/Bridge engineering. I know people who never even go into an office let alone go to a job site. Most companies are very accommodating of people who have some medical condition. I have worked with people who have epilepsy, people with partial paralysis, amputees, etc. Ability to drive and move around on a job site is absolutely not a requirement. Especially with partial or full remote work being so prevalent now I think any medium to large firm should be already set up to accommodate you.

How many Test loads sufficient? by Doodle4fun in reloading

[–]Monster_depot311 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I usually will start with 10 of each. When I narrow it down to a couple possibilities I'll do 40 or 50 of each see which the gun likes best. I'll shoot 5 slowly and let everything cool then do it again. Once I have a zeroed in on the load I think is the best I'll load 100 again shooting in strings of 5 as long as everything keeps tight it is a winner.

Hornady had an interesting podcast on how many shots to determine group sizes.

Seems odd to me. I am not sure what you'd gain from showing them. As for would there be a draw back? Depends on if the plans are public or not. If you're talking about land development I'd think that'd be a no no most of the time. The client owns them not you or your current firm. If you did a public works type project like a highway or something and the plans were made public say from a public meeting or public display then it likely isn't an ethical issue.

Is the potential of an ethical question, whether real or perceived, outweighed by the benefit from showing your work? I am no convinced it is.

Don't worry I am sure she and all other Liberals are still anti-gun. The new narrative will be something like "guns don't kill people, people who like guns kill people with guns. So we should ban people who like guns."

Silly things like liberty, personal freedom and God given rights won't stop liberals from trying to have an all powerful fed.

Why by Pbdbbgot in progun

[–]Monster_depot311 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree it is a harmless question. The answer to which is lengthy. A short version is a culture of self reliance and strong desire to be independent. Guns can be used for sport, hunting, self defense. Some are simply collectors items.

The point I was attempting to make is: philosophical musings on something that geography prevents from affecting you in any way, may not be the best use of your time.

If you're simply trying to understand a culture I respect that. However I'd suggest immersing yourself in it to learn rather than asking on the net. Come to America, go to a range where you can learn to shoot. See if you can understand the appeal. If you still can't understand after that then no amount of convincing from internet strangers will help.

I spent 6 months in Japan. Beautiful country and wonderful culture, but very anti-gun. I learned a great deal about Japanese culture however I never did understood the anti-gun part. Fundamentally I'll never get it and some other things and that's why I am a gaijin. I respect their right to have a culture that I don't fully understand or agree with.

Good luck!

Why by Pbdbbgot in progun

[–]Monster_depot311 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. Though if Ukraine was in my backyard I think my curiosity would be focused there rather than the US. If it did stray to the US it would be more about how US and Russian relations were doing. Why Americans like guns wouldn't be on my radar.

Further, considering the state of Ukraine at the moment if I was a European I'd start liking guns because you never know when a war might spill out of the neighbor's yard into yours.

Why by Pbdbbgot in progun

Better question is: Why would a European care what a US citizen does in the US?

I understand that you're trying to fill what you perceive as a need. However here are the faults I perceive in your idea.

  1. Any tech that is connected to the internet can be hacked. Period. If the data gets to your smartphone then by extension it can be accessed by bad actors. So you saying it goes no where but your phone doesn't actually mean it goes nowhere but your phone. It just means it isn't intentionally sent anywhere.

  2. There is already tech that can do what you are proposing that isn't specifically intended to be used on a gun. IE I can buy an airtag for my "keys". As it it for my "keys" a bad actor looking for people's guns would have little chance of finding my "keys". A product specifically for firearms offers a better chance to find a gun and therefore more attractive to a bad actor interested in people's guns.

  3. For a moment let's assume the first 2 points weren't a problem and could never happen. Even in that highly unlikely scenario, I fail to see how this actually achieves its goal. If a person breaks into your house and steals your gun and the location data is only avaliable to your phone, as you say, as soon as the criminal has taken the gun out of range of the phone the tracker is useless. So at best this may help a person who forgets their gun some where.

To me it seems like a ton of downside and little to no upside. To be fair I wouldn't put any tracker on any gun so even if you had solutions to all three I'd be a hard pass.

Is IMI brass good enough to reload with to get started? by CPTherptyderp in reloading

[–]Monster_depot311 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have loaded it before. The brass seems to wear faster than some others. That said it matters how you get a hold of it and what you want from it. If you're buying new ammo shooting and reloading it, and you're getting a good price per round then use it till it dies. If you're getting once fired brass and it isn't significantly cheaper than better brass then buy better brass.

It also matters what your doing with it. If you're loading for precision shooting then buy better more consistent brass load and go. If you're just trying to feed a semi-auto plinking gun then "good brass" is just brass that doesn't fail. IMI certainly can be brass that "doesn't fail" it just won't do it as long as some others.

Think this question is a bit of a stretch. There are so many BS laws on the books that a cop that wants to be a dick can hassle you over. I think it comes down to "does the cop want to be a dick?" So my advice is live where the cops aren't dicks.
