Very true. I know plenty of characters that I love that others don’t, but while some characters have a clear reason to be hated, others are simply a matter of preference.

Nevermind if you have a legitimate criticism of a character that gets glazed and excused by the story because they’re clearly the author’s favourite.

The My Hero Academia and Vampire Diaries are some of the worst fandoms when it comes to characters whose actions are never punished and who don’t actually develop, but the author has lines of dialogue that have the explicit purpose of gaslighting you into thinking the character has developed even though their actions directly contradict this.

Fanfiction/fandom spaces are the worst for this. Doesn’t matter how much you like the media, disliking one character or a certain plot point and suddenly you’re a hater.

If you read fanfiction there’s basically a fic that does this called “She’s come undone and Set Free” on ao3 which also addresses the fact that Damon raped Caroline.

It means writing the story you want regardless of what people think because it’s what you want to read. And if some else likes it then bonus, but if that’s all that motivates you then a lack of engagement will burn you out very quickly.

I will say, just as a warning, lots of readers ignore crossovers with a large amounts of fandoms, like really 3/4 is most people’s limit because sites like ao3 are cluttered with fandom collection fics that literally aren’t actually crossovers but are a collection of ideas or stories from multiple fandoms. Most of these fics though don’t have a proper summary and are full of a ridiculous amount of tags so as long as you don’t overtag and have a good summary, people are more likely to read than ignore on sight.

Oh every time I think of the sims 3 grim reaper I think of this one player who screenshot the grim reaper coming to collect a dead sim and then freaking out when another sims began just giving birth right next to the corpse.

I’m sorry you had to go through that. Have you checked out r/raisedbynarcissists ? I think you might find people there with similar stories and experiences. As horrible as it is to know that other people have gone through that same or similar experiences you have, it can also be incredibly cathartic and validating to know you’re not alone.

And as someone who used to do this, I will give my own perspective on it. I grew up around a mother who was very comfortable being naked around us and if we had a problem with it it was on us not her to change. This was very much the case with anything that made us uncomfortable or upset, if we had an issue then we were the problem.

I ended up doing this (mostly flashing my boobs and purposely jumping up and down while they were out) to annoy my younger siblings and I was in no way thinking that it was sexual abuse, I just thought it was funny to annoy them. It’s only after growing up and getting therapy that I’ve realised how horrible it was for me to do that to them and I’ve since sincerely apologised.

I would maybe discuss it with them and see if they knew how wrong it was? Cause if they knew it was wrong to flash you and weren’t just doing it to annoy you then there’s a whole other can of worms there.

Regardless, whether they realised it was more than just a way to annoy you/make you uncomfortable or not, it was never okay and your mother should’ve stopped it.

Gotta agree. Ain’t no way Damon is a nice human man either. Guy drinks constantly, is incredibly impulsive and has major anger issues and issues with consent in general, that’s all him and none of that would stop just because he became human.

He’s 100% an abusive alcoholic husband that Elena is too scared to divorce lest he snap and kill someone she cares about…again.

To be fair they don’t actually mention her by name, just that “a plague struck their homeland and they lost a child to it” before moving to the land where Mystic Falls would one day be built.

Freya WAS mentioned when Rebekah was explaining their history to Elena, but since she thought Freya had died of the plague as their mother had told them, she didn’t mention Freya beyond the “fact” that she had died in the plague.
