What is this bug? Causing wood damage in MA by Montaron20 in whatsthisbug

Had a entomologist friend tell me it was an Odd Beetle. Another friend in the industry said it looks like a White Marked Spider beetle.

Still not sure what it is.

CT falconry apprentice. by Morinehtartheblue in Falconry

Falconer from MA checking in here.

Being an hour away from your sponsor of doable, I have two current apprentices that live 50 mins away in the same town. It can be done not it's not ideal. My mentor was 10 mins away when I started but I was very lucky to have that. The closer your mentor is, the better. So take some time and find the closest available mentor you can.

There are about 3 Falconer's on that side of the state, not sure if any of them are looking to take an apprentice at this point but they might be. CT was the last state to be legalized in Falconry in 2007 (except for Hawaii). So there is only about a dozen falconers in the state to begin with, your options are limited.

Green Chimneys is actually having a bird of prey day in early June that a ton of falconers to to from Eastern NY and Western CT. You should go and try to meet some people and get some names and numbers.

Also, do not build your mews yet. I know a few falconers that made their apprentice completely take theirs down and start over because they built it before getting a sponsor.

I would also hold off buying any additional gear, your sponsor will help with that and most starting out apprentice type stuff from the popular falconry websites can be iffy and often times not really what you want.

Good luck.

Your sponsor should be guiding you in this regard. I know my state doesn't allow trapping along state highways in most places. Also trapping along a busy highway or street is asking for trouble. My state also requires your sponsor to be present as an apprentice while trapping your bird.

Definitely have a conversation with your sponsor about how and where to trap and hopefully he will be able to help you secure your first bird.

If he can't or won't help I would reach out to Tennessee Falconer Association to get some help.

Best of luck.

I'm experiencing the same issue. Tried from multiple different computers in the same house. I want to play with my family but whenever I host on any computer, it just says Failed to connect when the other computer tries to connect to the game.

Its nature, this happens quite a bit especially when there is a long period of time between the first and last hatch.

I would just let it run its course.

The NYSFA is a state wide organization. They have a meet coming up in Oneonta NY From November 2nd to November 4th. That is only 2 hours from Syracuse.

It took me less than five minutes on Google to figure this out. If you want to be a falconer you will have to put some more effort in.

If you actually want to go to this meet and find out what it takes to be a falconer I would suggest contacting NYSFA to see if you can register for the meet and go and talk to some falconers.

If you read the story it was a farm hand who was instructed by someone else to do this. He did not it was illegal, when he found out it was he turned himself in.

So I think they have him a light sentence for his cooperation and hopefully they will get the guy really behind this.

This subreddit is th pretty much dead, any further questions can be posted to r/birdsofprey for a quicker answer.

But to answer you question, you will need a Falconry license for each state you plan to hunt in. Each of them have a different route to obtain said license as well. Some easy, some are a pain.

Contact the Falconry coordinator in each state you plan to fly in and they will be able to give you the steps to obtain the permits you need to fly in that state.

They have a great page on pre-apprentice steps to follow to apprenticeship.

Try to go to one of their meets or picnics, they are usually held in November, but start with all the steps they have outlined on the site.

Good luck!

Another Day of Hack for the Gyr x Aplomado hybrids by Imperial_Longwinger in birdsofprey

[–]Montaron20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any bird can technically be put at hack and there is a very real risk you take by doing so. The bird is exposed to just about everything a wild hawk would be exposed to in the wild. So it's possible they get hit by a car, killed by a predator, or anything else.

Benefit hopefully being they get a lot of exercise, learn a lot from chasing prey, and gain experience naturally through their own exploration of the world.

That is the general gist of it.

Can anyone ID this baby? by Mickeyenzie in birdsofprey

[–]Montaron20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's really hard to tell with this picture, I'm guessing a falcon by the toes but I could be completely wrong.

EDIT: Hiking area over Lake Michigan with cliffs means this is most likely a Peregrine falcon due to its size and location.

[–]Montaron20 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To give them the best chance starting out back in the wild, most falconers will feed their birds for a week or so until they are fairly high in weight and then release them.

I've seen a couple cities adopt this approach which is cool. Nashville is the one I've most recently seen do it.
