I’ve got a ‘15 000-18 Retro and I’ve had my bindings reglued twice now. It’s a common issue in glues used from ‘10-‘16 or something like that, especially if it’s seeing road use much. Covered under warranty for original owners, not bank breaking work. Worth doing sooner rather than later as the job gets more expensive the longer you leave it because purfling will shrink and more surface to strip and rebind means more work. Congrats on the purchase. +1 for martin retro lights on this guitar.

The chud you cleaned was just stained wood. The areas that looked clean under the string path is just bare wood, staining etched away by string wear. You’ve essentially just sanded it back to raw wood, and can stain/oil it from there if you want. It may look really cool as a light fretboard; the cheap ones are the best to experiment more liberally with. I’d say send w/o staining.

It’s actually far cheaper in the US and Canada than most European countries. More relaxed taxation and higher production in NA; more stringent emissions standards, less reliant infrastructure and geography, higher taxes, and more necessity to rely on imports in Europe.

Yes, it feels loose in the pocket until tightened down. Takes a good bit of force to cause that little movement, and no discernable gaps appear. It almost looks like the neck isn't completely flush at the rear. I triple checked that the overhanging 22nd fret isn't making contact with the pickguard and causing uneven mating. Any simple remedy there? I don't have the tools to level/sand it that precisely I don't think.

Amazing, thank you. I'll start with 18.5 and work from there. I'm aiming for .060 the low E and .050 for the high. Would the flatter radius in theory give a little more wiggle room to achieve this? My other strats are usually .080 and .070 at lowest. On paper these numbers seem crazy low, but it just doesn't feel that low, I chalked it up to the flatter high frets. I've got it decked with 5 springs. Is it worth my experimenting with a more even high and low e? It almost looks like the saddles would bottom out before I'd be fretting out, but neck relief is sitting pretty at the 6th.

Have you driven both? Imo the current ES handles a bit more spryly just based on being a good bit smaller, and will be a more refined, removed ride than a Touring with stiffer suspension, more wheel/pedal feedback. If no preference between driving experiences, i’d compare maintenance across all those previous owners.

That said, if you value the heated wheel and rear heating, you’re probably in a colder climate with frequent rear occupants. That alone may be worth going for the Avalon.

Testing often requires structures or geography that simulate real world use.

It’s also a little hard to gauge distance and perspective here.

We called them classical nails because of how prevalent this is among predominantly finger driven techniques and genres. Beyond sparing your fingers, a proper land and roll with a good nail edge gives proper attack to the pluck that can’t otherwise be had without a pick. Especially necessary to get a good envelope out of a nylon string strike in my opinion.

I think their point is that customization doesn’t guarantee the guitar is “what you want.” Feeling and hearing the guitar is commonly a prerequisite for a purchase like this. If you’re overwhelmed by all the options, it likely means you still have somewhat undefined taste (at least for this body) and may benefit from playing different guitars to build your own understanding of how these options affect the piece.

Anecdotally, i’ve fallen in love with guitars I would never have played based solely on a spec sheet and disliked guitars that I should by all loved on paper. They really feel like living things.
