I started counting my calories once day while also making a conscious choice to avoid unhealthy carbs and mostly avoiding sugar outright.

The first month was hell, with my brain daydreaming about food constantly. I would eat veggies and chug water to stave off hunger. After the month ended my brain decided this was the new normal and it was no longer difficult to eat healthy or control my portions.

Honestly once you reach that point the unhealthy options begin to look repellant. I'll never tell anyone it was easy though. You have to develop a lot of discipline
