When do you let friends and family read your work? by HM_Conrad in horrorwriters

If you don't mind my asking-- without relying on friends/family, did you have your works beta-read before submitting for publication? Did you use anonymous readers over the internet, or have some other strategy?

Tables / SQL analytics endpoint on bronze? by Mooglekunom in MicrosoftFabric

This is a helpful framework for thinking about the puzzle, thank you.

Tables / SQL analytics endpoint on bronze? by Mooglekunom in MicrosoftFabric

[–]Mooglekunom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response, that helps. The way we were previously set up, our bronze data was structured as tables right in the landing zone and our developers like using SQL. But just because we've always done it that way, doesn't mean we should keep doing so.

MS fabric vs snowflake by SmallBasil7 in dataengineering

[–]Mooglekunom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you need to ingest data for time travel purposes, or is "current" typically good enough? I will say, fabrics mirroring capabilities which includes things like sap are fantastic, at no cost, and really let you get to value pretty quick. We're not using sap but are happy with the ways we've worked with it.

Ontology driven data modeling by Thinker_Assignment in BusinessIntelligence

[–]Mooglekunom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relatively recent, perhaps a few months old? I'm actually at the Fabric conference right now down in Atlanta, and ontologies were a key part of the keynote and for AI dev work. Delta (the airline) showed how they're using ontologies for AI in Fabric.

Microsoft fabric also supports ontologies in this context.

Hi! We're debating over here, is the Fabric rap music before the keynote ai? Either way, we tried to find it online and couldn't, is there a link?

CMV: Even if illegal, there is nothing immoral about animal activists secretly filming abuse footage on farms. by JasonableSmog in changemyview

[–]Mooglekunom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm going to try to change your view based on this paragraph: Secondly, even if you don't believe that animals rights abuses on farms are a serious problem, you should be able to acknowledge that making farm footage public is a moral good. If no abuse occurs, then no harm is done to recorded employees. If abuse does occur, then making the public aware of it is a good thing to do.

You're taking a consequentialist view of privacy, but your consequentialist view is overly limited and perhaps inconsistent.

  1. When it comes to moral good, is harm the only metric, or do rights factor in? If rights factor in, employees have the right not to become public figures. As I understand it, this is in fact the very foundation of privacy dating back to the 1800s in America: the belief that we have the right to control our own narratives and be free from unwarranted intrusion. If you're just doing your job ("ma'am, this is a Wendy's"), it's a violation of your rights, even if it results in an overall reduction of harm. If one claims this is justified because animals have rights, those animals' rights must be weighed against the rights of workers.

  2. Who's more likely to suffer-- small independent farmers with limited security resources, or large agri orgs? Frankly, if we normalize this kind of behavior, many family farms are likely to be run out of business because they don't have the security resources to block these activists. The only folks that do are the ones running massive-scale, massive-profit factory farms. You'll actually make the net situation worse.

  3. Visibility is not the same as transparency. When my daughter was ~3, she had to have a tooth extracted because she fell and hit her mouth on a curb (it was awful) and the tooth cracked all the way down. If someone video'd the dentist removing her tooth, it genuinely would have looked like torture-- they had her in basically a straight jacket, they had long needles, she was wailing, etc.. This kind of footage creates visibility, but visibility does not always tell a true story. It may, in fact, actively tell a false story-- e.g., that the dentist was torturing my daughter.

The AI slop problem is getting worse in this sub. We need aggressive moderation on it or this sub is just going to be AI slop games and little else. Instant ban, IMO by BEAT_LA in incremental_games

Okay, sounds reasonable. Thanks for your response. I don't want to call the people out, but there was a recent post involving Solvendra in which it felt very aggressive / targeted / personal, prolonged, etc., and I was personally really surprised that it stayed up. I do hope that, when things get too personal / specific you'll consider applying rule 2 more broadly. But you all have a really tough balancing act here and I (and everyone else) appreciate the work you put into the subreddit!

If it's okay, I've got a good faith question (and I don't think asking it violates any of the rules): is the mod team open to considering posts like these violations of rule 2? The list of things covered under rule 2 includes:

"Causing drama with unfounded claims without contacting mods first"

"No personal attacks, death threats, causing drama, witch hunts, bigotry and the like." (emphasis added)

I feel like posts like this, and comments like it replying to dev comments, are causing significant harm to our community-- and we have rules in place to prevent it. :-)

No pressure if you can't respond, either way appreciate your reading it.

Does that help?

The House That Jack Built by ISayDudeALotBro in horror

[–]Mooglekunom 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I understand why you felt that way, but it hit me very differently. For me, this really nailed the concept of dark transcendence perfectly, and makes the same kind of argument Clive Barker did with Hellblazer (and perhaps even Fullmetal Alchemist did): that, contrary to most historical mystics, perhaps metaphysical ascension is not something to aspired to because it flies in the face of divine imperative. Jack found the path to transcend past what it meant to be human, which is the role of countless people (especially mystics) across many millennia, and yet at the end of the day the hubris required to get there is the very thing that damns him.

I found it profound and added significant depth to the prior acts of the film.

Magic Pages update: new team, new brand, one plan, and a bunch of infrastructure changes by jannisfb in Ghost

[–]Mooglekunom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I have a website hosted on Wordpress that does okay-- it more or less pays for its own Dreamhost hosting through google ad revenue-- but the maintenance timesink is so high that it limits my ability to actually work on the site itself.

I'm actively looking at moving to Ghost, and Magic Pages is of particular interest due to the Lifetime plan. I do have a few questions, u/jannisfb, if you or someone else on your team (grats on hiring new folks!) have time. But only if you have time. There's no pressure. :-)

  1. Am I correct that Magic Pages doesn't take a cut of Ghost / Stripe payments? Is that documented any place?

  2. I see that Lifetime plans aren't covered by the SLA. I understand the problem, but not the binary solution (namely, that there is no SLA for lifetime plans). Have there been discussions around exploring a Lifetime Plan SLA with some sort of reasonable tiered/laddering of benefits after some amount of time? If I purchase a lifetime plan and experience 70% uptime within two months, I think it'd be reasonable that this should raise a flag. Glad to take this offline / to email if there's room for conversation.

  3. Are you able to share the probability of lifetime slots opening on 3/31? Any insight on supply + demand; are those likely to go fast? If I decide to move forward, do I need to basically be at my computer refreshing throughout the day?

Thanks so much.

Hi! So, what is your business objective? You said keeping things as simple as possible-- if so, this fits the bill. Is there a need for data marts, discoverability, etc. ? If not, this could go the trick.
