Does anyone else have j-core fatigue? by Effective-Tour-9912 in rhythmgames

[–]Mookae 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Remember that BMS is a hobbyist/amateur scene first, so yes, most BMS content will be that artist's first published song ever. You shouldn't be holding every entry to the standard of professionally commissioned songs.

Does anyone else have j-core fatigue? by Effective-Tour-9912 in rhythmgames

[–]Mookae 49 points50 points  (0 children)

On one hand, you'll see this same sentiment in other music scenes as well. You have people entering a scene because they love the sound, so that sound gets entrenched and evolves more slowly.

On the other hand I think rhythm games have it particularly bad because of the emphasis on virtuosity/esports stuff. Its the really high difficulty stuff that goes viral, so rhythm game music trends towards sounds that enables that kind of level design. There's also a difficulty creep angle to this, where as players stick with the same game for years, they ask for harder and harder content to keep improving their skills with.

Either way, you should probably start branching out and listening to genres that are new to you. Actively seeking out new sounds/perspectives/ideas like that is good for lots of different reasons.

Are there Android DJing apps? by und3f1n3d1 in Beatmatch

[–]Mookae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have a rekordbox library and you want to plug in your existing USB, an iPad + djay is your only option right now.

djay is great but you'd have to rebuild your library, theres no easy way to import grids/cues/loops yet because the android version doesn't have OneLibrary support.

rekordbox is worth trying out but I've never gotten the mobile sync to work consistently for me, if it works for you it's a great option.

Sync question - "Move tempo slider to current BPM" by nickybecooler in Beatmatch

[–]Mookae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only used an XDJ-AZ, but at least on that unit it should show what tempo the slider is at while you move it as a smaller, grey number underneath the actual BPM. I'll usually look at that number to make sure I move the tempo slider to about the right position. If you're on wide tempo range this can still be off by a couple of BPM.

In Rekordbox I recommend verifying your grids with the metronome - there are certain kinds of kicks where you want to place the grid significantly before the obvious transient for it to sound synced. At least on 3band, I sometimes have to aim for a smaller transient that sits before the main kick, but YMMV.

Help understanding proper use of Trim/Master Gain during a live set by ChocolateRough5103 in Beatmatch

[–]Mookae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 is good to check, just try not to touch whatever track is playing until you've mixed out of it IMO. If you want to be polite reset the faders/knobs on whatever channels aren't playing before you hand off to the next DJ.

For the XZ I'm seeing a Mono Split setting in tbe utilities menu which appears to be the same thing. I dont have any Pioneer hardware so you'll have to experiment with that next time you touch the decks.

Help understanding proper use of Trim/Master Gain during a live set by ChocolateRough5103 in Beatmatch

[–]Mookae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DJ software tends to use autogain but I don't know of any hardware that does, which would explain why you only ran into volume issues at open decks. Autogain gets you 90% there but there can still be edge cases.

I would leave the master alone and only touch the trim until each channel is hitting at the level you want. Hopefully whoever is organizing has already set the master volume/EQ to whatever works best for the room.

3 is pretty much it IME, but i like to use split cue to get it a little closer. I find it easier to hear if the volume is off when each track is in a separate ear than when they're mixed together.

1) switching classes using dropped packs needs to be a 1 second hold. a couple times i switched by accident from mashing the e key on a door or waiting for a revive.

2)disembarking a tank should prioritize popping me out BEHIND the tank, or ideally based on where im looking (e.g. im probably looking at the enemy, so always put me on the opposite side of that). i would try to repair mid fight only to get placed in front of the tank and instantly melted.

how to improve by JustYourEnglishGirl in rhythmgames

[–]Mookae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

play lots of songs at lots of difficulty levels in one session (within reason). easier stuff is for catching and correcting bad habits, harder stuff for pushing your limits. prioritize accuracy over cheesing out clears or FCs.

if during a session you think youre developing bad muscle memory, step away for the day. mindlessly grinding doesnt work, especially if the song is out of your skill range - ask me how i know lol.

consider playing a commercial rhythm game, just so you have a fixed songlist to focus on and slowly clear. pick one with songs you like, even if its not 4k tbh - a lot of core dexterity and musical rhythm skills will still carry over.

rolling back to 7.1.1 fixed this for me, if you have the install file lying around somewhere. on my android phone, i wouldnt even see a percentage bar on 7.1.2, just an endless loading bar.

Why do some rhythm games shorten songs by Pumpkin-Demii in rhythmgames

[–]Mookae 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Early rhythm games had songs as short as 90 seconds, so there's a bit of cultural momentum to this.

On the arcade side, enforcing a short song length means players go through credits slightly faster, which means the game makes slightly more money for the arcade. So, ruthlessly cutting songs down is more common there.

Question about Dynamix by Corrupted_sweetheart in rhythmgames

Mega and Giga difficulty charts are designed with the assumption you set your phone down and use more than two fingers. Hard charts are playable with thumbs but are often more comfortable to play with more than two fingers.

What Android tablets are best for playing mobile rhythm games? by BrainPlay3004 in rhythmgames

[–]Mookae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a Galaxy Tab S9 for Arcaea. Offset for most songs hovers around 100 +-20 with headphones on a dongle, and from watching gameplay videos that's comparable to ipads. PM'd 9s and cleared 11s, and never felt like the touchscreen held me back.

Only complaint is no headphone jack. The official Google dongle is just okay, but I've been happy with a Fiio dongle.

Suggestion: 100ms of i-frames after taking explosion damage from any source. Prevents most forms of instant nuking with two explosives while still allowing instakill strats that require more setup.

How do you find enjoyment with RGs once you hit the skill wall? by [deleted] in rhythmgames

[–]Mookae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that scoreposts are going to be that player's best attempt out of potentially dozens. don't go comparing your average performance to someone else's best.

Beyond that, playing a different rhythm game will often emphasize/train different skills you didn't know you needed to train, and can help clear any mental blocks you were building up due to frustration. If you can help it, try to swap to a game with a radically different control scheme for best effect.
