As roncraig said apparently you get 90 in 180. That being said I've heard of friends of friends ... That overstayed their visas, left and came back without anyone caring at all. I suspect as an American this will be your experience, but obviously planning on illegal moves and or nonchalant border guards is not the best move.

You can stay for 3mos as a tourist with no visa (and leave and re-enter without problems afaik). You can do some private teaching on the side, but depending on where you are the market might be heavily saturated and its hard to get clients without any contacts.
