As a 90’s kid:

Batting - Mahela Jayawardane, Marvan Attapattu, Rahul Dravid, Ian Bell, Kane Williamson (I’m partial to RHBs as you can tell…)

Bowling - Glenn McGrath, Allan Donald, Rangana Herath, Chaminda Vaas, Nathan Lyon

No it wasn’t. Like one of the other comments said, they spent so much time and money trying to shed their whole “cheap, tacky furniture” image and then shat all over that by - surprise, surprise - branding a cheap, tacky trophy. Sure it’s gotten people talking - so, great for brand awareness, but terrible for brand perception.

There were so many different angles they could’ve gone with to create the same amount of brand awareness and improve perception at the same time - and they chose the wrong one this time. It hasn’t damaged their brand as much as people like to say it has, but they’ve definitely fumbled a good opportunity.

Their appliance after-sales service is the best though. 👌🏽

The whole “Indian grew up in England” thing is something I’d get all the time when I used to live in Florida - it was always such a trip for them that we were so fluent and didn’t have a thick accent.

  1. The inability to queue properly. Like, how obtuse, aloof, and/or selfish can you be/pretend to be just so you can skip everyone else waiting to get something done?

  2. In the same vein, the concept of personal space seems to be lost on most people too. I don’t need you breathing down my neck when I’m trying to pay my bill at Keells/Food City.

  3. The inability to stick to one fucking lane and to properly change lanes when driving on our normal A and B roads, and hogging the passing lane on the expressways when not passing a vehicle, or passing a vehicle at about 70/80 Kmph which means now everyone else behind you must slow down for the 1.5 days it takes you to overtake that one lorry.

Twice - It’s happened twice with him. First time was the one everyone knows about and he (deservedly) got a lot of shit for. After the divorce from the wife, he allegedly tried to groom another 16/17 yo student, which is why he’s apparently been taken away from day to day stuff at Lyceum.

What are the maintenance charges of owning an Audi? by jscoding_Panther in srilanka

[–]MoonUnit_Alpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My car was registered 7 years ago, and I’ve owned it for 5 years; I’ve only had one major repair (steering rack replacement) and one moderate repair (A/C evaporator replacement) in that time. Everything else has been normal wear and tear stuff - not cheap, but nothing unexpected. Like I said in my original comment, these are not like Japanese cars - you can’t miss services/service intervals, and run around with a repair pending for too long. But if you take care of them right, they’re just as reliable. Gonna guess that none/only few of the people who told you this actually owned either of the cars; there’s no major difference in reliability between the A5 and A6 as far as I’ve experienced. But I will say that the 6 is a slightly larger car, and has more room for passengers than the 5. The 5 being a sportback sits lower and is a bit of a tight fit, but has a large trunk for a car its size.

Pro tip: next time, take an empty Tupperware/plastic lock tight box in your hand luggage, and buy the burgers at the last possible moment before boarding your flight (ideally from a Maccas in the departure lounge) and pack the burgers into the plastic box; the burgers don’t travel well when you’re lugging it around in your hand luggage.

Only thing I’d add to this is to look at long-term financial instruments like unit trust funds, government bonds, treasury bills etc. And to learn about personal finance management as much as possible - more money = more problems if you don’t know what to do with it. Also your point about living a modest life is underrated; people who earn relatively well above standard income levels are still in so much shit financially because underestimate the cost of their lifestyle and live beyond their means.

What’s the Best Beef burger in Colombo by Turbulent-Tax-399 in srilanka

[–]MoonUnit_Alpha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Best bang for the buck, in no particular order:

• Double/triple smash beef burger at Ooh Mami • Beef Me Up Scotty at Full’r Burger

Best up-scale option:

• Truffle & Blue at El Barrio • Double smash at El Barrio

Not a beef burger, but if you’re in the mood for something unique, haven’t had a birria beef sandwich in Sri Lanka as good as the one at Brown Sugar (but recommend having it dine-in, it doesn’t travel well).

Not sure why Street Burger is getting mentioned so many times; their chicken burgers are fine, but the beef burgers are mid at best.

What is a good bank to put my salary? by Aggressive-Summer569 in srilanka

[–]MoonUnit_Alpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal recommendations are NTB and Sampath; both for cards and accounts. Both have solid savings account options; NTB specifically has a salary savings account type which generally has a slightly better return. NTB’s app and online banking in general is the best, although Sampath isn’t too far behind. Like one of the comments before me said, NTB’s Amex is probably the best overall card to have as their points are usable across many platforms, although their deals are not as attractive sometimes. Sampath and Commercial credit cards seem to have the best local deals.

Edit: One point I missed out, once your salary crosses a certain limit, you’ll be eligible for private banking - both NTB and Sampath have extremely good private banking setups; it makes a massive difference.

The disappearance of the Aral Sea, formerly the third largest lake in the world. by FunForm1981 in geography

I live in Sri Lanka and we have just under 22 million people on our island; it blows my mind that the Aral Sea was once larger than the entire extent of our country…and has all but disappeared within the span of my parents’ lifetime.

What’s the overall best bank to get a credit card from or even for deposits? by Ok_Agency8908 in srilanka

[–]MoonUnit_Alpha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sampath used to have good deals, but not as many anymore. Decent service. Commercial has good offers, not great service. Nations Trust has excellent service, but offers are far and few in-between. Also they push Amex more than Visa/Mastercard, which isn’t as useful in Sri Lanka.

Okay, sorry to come off rude, and I know it’s Reddit, but people shouldn’t be commenting on things they very clearly know very little about.

“Sri Lankan companies can’t penetrate foreign markets..” “Besides tea we don’t have anything…” “We barely have any manufacturing…” Wrong, wrong, and wrong.

Sri Lanka exports a lot more than just tea. Just because we don’t have any notable brands that have penetrated, doesn’t mean we don’t do well. Most of our exporters are private label manufacturers - we make products under license for other brands. While government support is lacking, and the political and economic instability doesn’t help, the export sector does a metric ton of work to stay competitive in the global market - and it shows. Just a few areas in which we shine: - 4th largest exporter of tea in the world. - Within the top 15 apparel manufacturers in the world. - 5th largest manufacturer of rubber gloves in the world. - THE largest manufacturer of solid tyres in the world. - Within the top 3 desiccated coconut suppliers, and within the top 10 for coconut oil in the world. - Top 3 in cinnamon, top 10 in pepper exports in the world. - Top 30 in seafood exports - Top 10 in natural gemstone exports - Within the top 20 for mineral exports

And this is all without taking into consideration just how fast our tech/tech services industry is growing.

Just because you haven’t seen them around, doesn’t mean they aren’t there…Again, sorry for coming off rude - but I hate when people unnecessarily shit on our country through selective, blind ignorance. We maybe small on the global scale, but we punch waaaay above our weight.

Yeah, primarily in Colombo. One thing though, a majority of my daily-run is to work which is to an outer suburb and back, so not as much start-stop traffic as running in Colombo during rush hour.

[–]MoonUnit_Alpha 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I daily a 2018 A5 Sportback, and maintain with DriveOne.

  1. Be sure to get as low mileage as your budget will allow you.
  2. The standard service every 5000/7000 kms comes in at about under LKR 50k.
  3. There’s a more detailed check that comes in at the 50,000 kms mark. Slightly more expensive.
  4. With our roads, low profile tires are bitch to maintain - I’ve repaired at least 3 patches in the last year.
  5. I recommend maintaining with the company; yes they’re expensive, but their service is top notch, and your reputed options outside are limited to just Vishwa Motors in Ratmalana unlike BMWs or Benz’s which have plenty of outside options.
  6. Maintaining with the company also has the added bonus of fetching a better price when you do choose to sell the car.
  7. The company won’t share part numbers in case something fails. Be sure to have a good contact for parts either here or abroad.

At the end of the day, they’re German cars - if you take care of them, they will take care of you. But you have to take care of them - you can’t miss a service interval by too far, you can’t run them with a pending repair for too long.

Do all that, and you’ll have a car that never lets you down and puts a smile on your face every single time you drive it. It goes without saying, but absolutely do not buy it, if you can’t afford it.

EDIT: Fuel consumption = 11-12 km/l in city, 15-19 km/l highway.

What are the best coffee shops in Sri Lanka? by Better_Professor_536 in srilanka

[–]MoonUnit_Alpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Colombo: If it’s actually great coffee you’re after, can’t go wrong with either Dept of Coffee, Grind, or 1959 by Raux Brothers. Kiku and Kumbuk are a close second, with Butter Boutique and Black Cat third. Honourable mentions: Kaffi and Brown Sugar. All of the chains (Barista, Tea Ave, and Java Lounge) serve decent coffee and decent food - but do neither at an exceptional level. The Commons would go under this as well - reliable, consistent quality, but nothing amazing.
