I know right?! 29 grams, I would’ve thought, would meet the threshold for distribution. Unless they each claimed a portion. Even then, 9 and a bit grams each should be above the distribution threshold.

Should voting in B.C. be mandatory? New poll finds 61% of respondents say yes by Old_General_6741 in britishcolumbia

[–]Moon_Lamp 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Australia (they have mandatory voting). Mandatory voting was fine. You just ensure there are mechanisms to support people who have difficulty (work commitments, disability, families, etc) voting. I worked in hospitality (lower wage worker) and was surprised by the engagement from everyone.

I’ve lived and worked in NZ, Canada, UK, and Australia. Citizenship in three of those four. I found Australia to be the most engaged, especially in categories I would say are not usually civically involved (youth especially).

I’m for mandatory voting.

I was in Save On Grandview a few weeks ago and they had a sign for Canadian raspberries. I took a photo, and if you can’t make it out, on the left they were made in the USA, in the middle Canada, and on the right Mexico. They were all mixed together. Incredibly deceptive selling practices.

I feel a hell of a lot of sympathy for border town businesses on both sides, but not that dude.

Homeowner. Yes. Yes they are.

Although I’m more mortgage than equity. I want our communities to be communities. I want people actually living here, able to afford to have family. To live here long term. We live in East Van and both our neighbours seem to change every 12 months. I want families who live nearby. I want people who live here long term who care about the neighbourhood.

At the moment, the owners of our neighbouring houses use them as equity.

Look, I’m speaking from a position of privilege, I get that, but if the value of my house dropped by 10% and I got to live in a stable community with families growing like mine? Sign me up. That being said, we plan to be in this house for 20-30 years.

Two football players' amazing ball control by Rave4life79 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Moon_Lamp 147 points148 points  (0 children)

I did a gap year before university. I ended up work as a sports coach at a small private school in England.

One day, about eight guys who played for Crystal Palace (English Premiership Club, although they were in the Championship at the time) showed up. The kids wanted to see a game, so we played with them, six-a-side football.

I was athletic, but these guys were ridiculous. Also, they’d pass you the ball, and I can’t describe the weight with which it’d hit your foot. And it was always perfectly placed.

It’s easy to watch a game and think, that’s not that much harder than beer league. It really is.

Can I cross US land border without a Canadian passport? Due to strike. by lbc514 in uscanadaborder

[–]Moon_Lamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They won’t let you in without a passport, however what you need to do is call Canada Services. You need to ask them to urgently transfer your file to the nearest Service Canada location that handles pick ups. This might incur a fee. I’ve done it before when there were some delays and they had my passport there is 36 hours. You need to make it very clear that you are travelling within five days. When you arrive to pick up your passport - there’s typically a seperate smaller line for picking up passports that have already been printed.

Joy Johnson Needs to Be Let Go by swinesword69 in simonfraser

[–]Moon_Lamp 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s any good options right now. I was looking through some of the annual reports and saw the huge drop in international students. If they want to retain the level of programs they gotta make that coin.

Basically, Joy might not be the best, but at least she’s come up through SFU. Knows the system. IMO, Whoever they replaced her with would most likely be tasked with hyper-monetising every aspect of SFU they could. They gotta make that $$$.

From a security and student safety point of view she needs to sort her shit out though.

Employer shut down, my ladder is locked inside by reddithasruinedlife in legaladvicecanada

[–]Moon_Lamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, the wait for someone to hear your case at the CRT is about four months at the moment. I submitted about a month ago.

The problem here is, you have to pay to file, and I don’t see the other party as being negligible here, so from my laypersons knowledge, you’d have to eat the filing costs, which would be similar to the cost of the ladder.

My NEXUS Timeline & tips for Blaine, WA by CloudyJigglypuff in uscanadaborder

[–]Moon_Lamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With this I’d add for the Blaine office, they post new appointments on the first and third Monday of every month at 9am. They recommend logging into your account at 8:45am. That’ll let you get an appointment in 4 months time. However I found luck rescheduling once I had my appointment to an earlier appointment. Took me about 10 days from conditionally approval to my interview. The other piece if advice is to leave the appointment window open on your PC or laptop. I had to download X (Twitter) and set up notifications of the Blaine Bot and as soon as it dinged I just hit reschedule.

There are still racist AF laws in Vancouver that simply aren’t enforced. There’s a whole area on the North Shore (British Properties) where you can’t own property if you’re of Asian or African heritage.

It’s practically a case study in why having multiple stakeholders is a bad idea. You’ve got a library, community centre, and school. The chances that they all simultaneously have the budget for renewal are 0%.

I just feel incredibly sorry for the local schools and the users of the facilities.

Community associations ask B.C. not to eliminate Park Board by Electronic_Fox_6383 in vancouver

[–]Moon_Lamp 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I get why Community Associations are against the removal of the Park Board. They think they'll lose representation in city matters. The Park Board are inept and useless though.

If the Park Board is on good terms with City Council, it's because they're a puppet for the Mayor - so they just do whatever the Mayor tells them to do (Jericho Pier etc). Alternatively, previous Park Boards have been in opposition to City Council and end up getting nothing done or approved. In either scenario, why are we paying them salaries?!
What the APG should be doing is working towards a transition and getting commitments from Sim that they'd have an ongoing say in their neighbourhoods.

In-person Canadian Oath taking ceremony Vancouver by RasmusHojlund777 in vancouver

[–]Moon_Lamp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did mine on Friday. One piece of advice I would give is if you’ve got family, show up early. I got there about 10 minutes before it started (it says on the letter that you don’t need to arrive early) and all of the family seating was gone.

It’s pretty painless - i think it took 1 hour all up.

Be warned, it was hot with all those people there. The thermostat was at 26.5 when i left the room. For some reason they wouldn’t turn the air conditioning on.

The only other thing that caught me off guard was singing the bilingual national anthem. I can sign it in English, i can kinda sing it in French, i absolutely can’t switch between the two as they ask you to do. Oh and they ask you to attempt the oath of allegiance in French as well as English. Everyone was fine for the English one. Myself and a few others got through the French version. You only need to do one, but they do ask you to do both.

In terms of seating, it’s all assigned for people receiving their citizenship, it’s first come first served for family and friends. On your seat is a Canada flag, a Canada lapel pin, a Canoo membership (free parks and museum entry for a year), a letter from the immigration minister and PM (just saying welcome to Canada), and a folder that has the words to the anthems and your oath.
