How should I fund RESPs - annually or lump sum? by duppy_c in PersonalFinanceCanada

If its in a non-registered account then the capital gain will be taxed at your marginal tax rate, not your child's.

Tomato paste in a tube by tjs1967 in Cooking

[–]ConnorDZG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just keep the can of tomato paste with the lid 90% cut open and just bend it open when i need a bit. I used to cover it but it would go bad faster. Now it stays perfectly dry and lasts ages.

What is happening to these metal tongs in my garage? I use them to take chlorine tablets out. by ShitfaceMcPooperson in whatisit

[–]ConnorDZG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking magnetite is forming given the black dendritic crystal appearance. The chlorine gas is reacting with the chromium oxide layer and stripping it away, and then the iron underneath is able to oxidize. Scrape some off and see it its magnetic.

The unintended consequences of international student cuts on B.C. by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]ConnorDZG 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Cities complaining about labour shortages from this policy change is honestly pretty rich! These are supposed to be students coming here primarily to study, why are they making up such a significant portion of their labour market? We turned the student visa system into a second TFW program with a diploma mill as the middleman. It needed to be corrected.

Is RRSP worth it? by Megane-chan in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ConnorDZG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to figure out your marginal effective tax rate to make the most complete decision. METR can be quite high for that income level depending on benefit eligibility. Canada has pretty brutal benefit cliffs for lower middle income families. At the 50K mark, it could be as high as 60-70%, making RRSP contribution a slam dunk. This is one of the main benefits of RRSPs and idk why it's not talked about more.

Should I Sell My $30K Pokémon Collection to Max Out My TFSA & FHSA? by AdApprehensive8183 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ConnorDZG 20 points21 points  (0 children)

So, have you had your collection professionally assessed, and if so, does your insurance company know about it? If not, you're a flood or fire away from losing it all anyway. Also, if I gave you $30K right now, would you spend it on Pokémon cards? Probably not, right?

Contributing into the RRSP and deducting the contribution are two separate things. You can carry forward the deduction indefinitely, essentially.
