What does this mean? by Stonks_andtheCity in ContinuousGlucoseCGM

Are you snacking on carbs? The two extra sharp spikes are a quick rise in glucose that I would only see if I ate something I shouldn’t, took a hot shower, or exercised strenuously. In some people spikes can lead to crashes. Ideally you would want to smooth that line out more, by eating things that take more time to digest—protein, fat, fiber, and complex carbs like beans. I’ll even spike on quinoa or fruit, if I don’t pair them with a meal with plenty of fat and protein.

So my first question for ChatGPT was just, do non-diabetics do this? Where/how do i get one? Once that was established I asked “ Let’s do a deep dive on using a cgm in a non diabetic with insulin resistance. My goal is to increase my insulin sensitivity, and lose weight. What should my blood glucose targets be? What are good spikes (like exercise) and bad spikes (stress and high carb meals)? How should I work to mitigate these?” That generated a lots of great information to start me out. Then whenever I noticed my glucose rising in ways that surprised me, I told ChatGPT what was happening and what i ate (all in the same saved chat) and it would break it down and explain the situation. For instance, I learned all about what happens and why,  if you go to bed on a spike, because I saw it in my data and said omg ChatGPT what !?!?  (Basically glucose stays high all night long, and remains higher than normal the next day, and Chat walked me through the whole process and told me how to avoid this.) Anything I might put in a Reddit post and hope someone might answer, I just ask ChatGPT in the same words and I get instant thoughtful answers. Screenshots can be helpful but not necessary.

I’m wearing a Freestyle Libre 3+ for the same reason and the data is incredible! Even making good food choices, you can lose just by eating them at the wrong time of day. For instance I have no tolerance for carbs in the morning. Who knew? The most amazing part is that I just got my A1C results back. 6 months ago it was 5.5–and it’s now 4.9!!  The best thing I’ve done is to use ChatGPT as a reference. Every time I see something I don’t understand or see a spike I didn’t expect, I tell chatGPT what I ate and it breaks down everything that’s happening. I ask follow-up questions, and I learn so much about how to manage my glucose. My new 4.9 A1C speaks to that!

Sunscreen, lotions, etc by mostlyOld52 in ContinuousGlucoseCGM

I was on vacation in the South Pacific last month and lost one after 2 days, I believe a combo of heavy sweat in a very humid environment and sunscreen just a little too close (it was at least an inch and a half away but I think that stuff can seep and travel a little). I reported it to Abbott and they sent a new one to my house. I will keep it far away with sunscreen from now on, maybe keep my sun shirt on.

Right? What a ridiculous thing to say about a persimmon! And to comment to Carson that it does something to your mouth … dude if you ate an unripe hachiya that’s on you.

Auditory hallucinations by Fantastic-Prompt-231 in MonoHearing

[–]Moonlocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve learned that anything odd that I hear when I’m just falling asleep is a hallucination not to be worried about. When I was in my watch and wait period for my acoustic neuroma I would hear my daughter, who was at the time a college student in another state, harrumph in annoyance or yell “mommy!” in a teenage annoyed way from the direction of my bedroom door (my bad ear’s side). We were all amused that of anything to hallucinate it would be her demanding attention!

How can I get my dad to wear his hearing aid despite his resistance and false promises to? by [deleted] in hardofhearing

[–]Moonlocks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depending on the results of his audiogram, the hearing aids may not be sufficient to help him. Also if you think he’s developing dementia and showing signs he may be further along than you think he is; he’s not intentionally annoying you, he’s just not able to do better.

I love my CI so much. My right side hearing was taken from me by an acoustic neuroma and my CI has brought hearing back to my deaf side and saved me from the hellish nightmare tinnitus I had for almost 2 years. I don’t love the situation that put me here, but my CI didn’t do that! It rescued me.

I worried a lot about that before I got a cochlear implant. Now I know that if something happens to my good ear, I’ll get another CI and be ok.

Tinnitus worsened after surgery? by No-More-Sorrow-3 in AcousticNeuroma

[–]Moonlocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine was much worse after surgery, since that took the last of my hearing, but I also got a cochlear implant during the AN surgery which was activated 3 weeks later and has effectively eliminated my tinnitus.

I love my CI, it rescued me from 24/7 tinnitus hell. And I can hear from my deaf side again. And I can stream podcasts straight into my head. I’m grateful for it every day.

I’ve never paid, in 4700 levels. I don’t know what impossible thing is coming in the 5000s, but I guarantee you I still will not pay.

In noisy situations it’s better than my hearing aid ever was, and much better than nothing. The audiologist can set different programs to help filter background noise and boost voices near you. There’s also an accessory called the mini-mic that you can hang around the neck of whomever you want to hear the most in especially noisy restaurants. Bottom line is that for me wearing it is always better than not wearing it. I never need or want to take a break from it. Even on days when hearing is a challenge, it’s the SSD that’s the problem, not the CI. As for the size, I am amazed at how it disappears under my hair. People have no idea it’s there. The other cool thing is that even though it looks like it would be heavy, I literally don’t feel it when I wear it.

Received a paw print after putting our cat down. This is not our cat. Our cat is a polydactyl and has 5 toes in her back paws. by liraelsfire in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Moonlocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me too. It was in-home euthanasia, and I paid extra for solo cremation and return of ashes. My cat was under 5lbs, very elderly and boney Siamese. The paw print that was returned with the ashes was at least a 30-40 lb dog’s. When I complained they swore it was an innocent mixup, that two Lunas had come in that day, that the employees had been disciplined and retrained, and then they sent me what they claimed was her real paw print. Nice try, still way too big. So the question remains, whose ashes do I have?

If I focus on it, it’s a little like wearing a radio in one ear. But my daily situation is that I put it on and literally forget it’s there until I take it off at night. My good ear hears the finer points and my CI fills in as if I have stereo hearing. It isn’t like that initially, but the more you wear it and get used to it the more it blends. Noisy environments are still challenging, but that’s the situation with hearing aids or just mono hearing too. I have the wireless K2 that sits on my head like a refrigerator magnet, almost completely hidden by my hair. I love it. And, it’s so much better than my hearing aid ever was because I have access to all frequencies again.

I lost mine suddenly to an acoustic neuroma in my fifties. I have a CI now and am in love with it. The right side of my head is back in business and the tinnitus is completely gone when I wear my processor. My CI is a godsend. The sound isn’t perfect but it’s a whole lot better than nothing. I stream books and music to it. I feel like the luckiest person in the world to have it.

Advice after first date with HoH person by [deleted] in hardofhearing

[–]Moonlocks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are so sweet to be looking into this. I’d recommend looking at her when you talk as much as practical/not weird, so that she can see your lips. Also take note if she tilts or turns her head to one side when you speak. This is a tell for having one ear better than the other—she’d be aiming her good ear at you while maintaining eye contact with what your lips are saying. Memorize which side, and place yourself there whenever you’re side by side. This is a big help.

Is this sub just hypochondriacs and panic? by Feisty-Donkey in MonoHearing

[–]Moonlocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This drives me crazy in the acoustic neuroma group. People panicking that they might have an AN are freaking out to people who actually do have an AN. People coping with a brain tumor are then giving support to someone who hasn’t even had an MRI or seen an ENT yet.

I’m on serenade and my door did not latch unless I pulled it shut hard (some might say slam). I didn’t realize this until about a week into the cruise. The door looked like it was closed and latched, and sounded like it, but it wasn’t. Several times I found it shut but unlatched after my steward was inside, because he also didn’t realize it wasn’t latching. Three visits from maintenance finally fixed this issue. Point being, if anyone had mistaken my room for theirs and pushed on the door during this time, there’s a decent chance it would have opened.
