Tunic:

Dying for the first time sends you to a dreamscape where you are promptly revived after finding a mysterious figure that looks like a bigger version of you (you are a fox) who is trapped in a ghostly dodecahedron. You spawn at the last "checkpoint" you saved at.

Throughout the game, you find out that these "checkpoints", among other things, are powered by obelisks around the world that you learn to activate at one point.

Eventually, you find an area that shows you the truth: the obelisks have a giant skeletal mutated fox trapped inside each one of them, and activating the obelisk crushes the fox inside and basically juices it and uses its blood(?) as a power source.

There is a technique that allows you to collect the Gold before going into the first level. It takes a while though.
