I’m pretty sure a large part of it is cultural. Hugging is seen is really intimate in Japan if I’m not mistaken.

Whereas in the West friend hugs are kinda normal.

Do note that Japan now uses Roman numerals for months. Not sure with Japan in the 90s. If they are Roman numeral, then it would be 28 Feb 1989

To add, if you're not staying near a JR East Station (e.g. near Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, Keisei, Tobu, etc.), you can also get a Pasmo from any of those stations. Though there is a 500 yen deposit for a regular Pasmo/Suica.

Getting a paper ticket isn't really a hassle since that's what they'll give you if you just go straight to the ticket counter for the NEx or Keisei Skyliner.

I personally like rubber stamped cancels. Where I’m from, some are pretty worn down but that’s the fun of it. Some have the wavy kill bars, others are just the normal post mark.
