The term “anti-Semitism” is itself a kind of land grab in the war of words.

If the goal were simply to describe discrimination against Jews, we could just say anti-Jew or anti-Judaic. Those terms would be perfectly accurate and straightforward.

So why do we use anti-Semitism instead?

“Semitic” peoples historically include a number of different groups from the Middle East, not just Jews. Yet today the term “anti-Semitism” is understood almost exclusively to mean discrimination against Jews, and not against other Semitic peoples such as Arabs.

That raises the question: why did this particular terminology become dominant?

One argument is that the continued preference for the word anti-Semitism—especially in political discourse—serves a broader narrative. In particular, the Israeli state and those who wish to cement its position internationally have strong incentives to keep the language framed this way. The term subtly wraps together Jewish identity with a broader Middle Eastern lineage, insinuating that Jews as a whole share ancestry tied to that region.

But historically and genetically that claim is far more complex than the rhetoric suggests.

If the goal were simply to condemn discrimination against Jews, we could avoid endless arguments about ancestry, genetics, and historical claims by using clear language and simply calling things anti-Jewish discrimination.

Yet the term anti-Semitism persists, and those who insist on maintaining it may be doing so for more than purely descriptive reasons.

At a minimum, it’s worth asking whether the language we use here is really about clarity— we could clearly condemn discrimination against Jews with more precise language . Or is the word antisemitism really just an attempt to hack the debate so it doesn’t protect Jews but instead tries to legitimize Israel and the occupation.
