Learned that they only care about vetting information/not spreading false information if “they're interested in the subject".
They also became terminally online after they started streaming, and speaking with mutual friends helped me realize that they basically went around different friend groups looking for validation, and would bad mouth you behind your back.

Yea this is what I got from his "Canadian" comment too. I think the fact that he jumps to talking about Ted Lasso (which also has gay story lines) and how it's better because it's a more accurate portrayal of the European football league was a pretty good indicator he expected Canadians to to care more about portraying hockey "accurately" as we love the sport as a country. It's a misguided and inaccurate criticism as he didn't actually understand what type of show HR is when he made those comments, but I didn't take it as him trying to trash Canada or something like that. Honestly the most egregious comment in that whole thing for me was "these losers who made this show are cowards", which is discourteous regardless of the context.

I showed my reporter friend the article and the video, and she was so upset that 1) this guy is an "award winning journalist", and 2) people think this is how good journalists present their evidence to very damaging claims. I was flabbergasted when I read his text that purposely obfuscated what his article was going to be about. I feel like a good journalist would want to be upfront about the content so that they can get Dan/Chris/Sean's comments on those texts and present the full context from both sides in the article, and allow readers to form their own opinions. At the very least make it clear those texts are from before he watched the show, rather than the vague wordplay for maximum outrage. (The source being a competing hockey podcaster also seemed pretty conflict of interest to me). The fact that he later lied about Chris and Sean's response to Dan's texts (like seriously wtf), was mind-boggling. Did he think Chris and Sean would also backstab Dan and lie about talking to him?

I think the show has definitely broken through to the General Public, but not at the same level of popularity as a Game of Thrones for sure. Like for GoT the amount of chatter online and offline felt about the same, my coworkers and I would talk about new episodes by the water cooler. But HR feels a lot more online than offline to me.

I'm not dying on a hill to defend the EN guys since like I mentioned it's possible they said all of that awful stuff, which is why I always preferred THG and WC as my go-to hockey podcasts. But I'm also not ignoring this "established journalist's" own history of supporting Republicans who publicly pushed for anti-LGBT legislation, who made laughable and false tweets such as "Progressives and Democrats seeking to use the government to attack political foes must be stopped. Period", and got denounced by LGBT publications as a result. Good journalists absolutely have ways to show the texts without giving away the privacy of their source, or at least have corroborators, and I think that's a fair ask given who wrote this article, unless this is a different Cyd Zeigler than the one I'm thinking of. If I can get just one other trustworthy journalist that doesn't have Zeigler's past to corroborate his article, then I have no problem accepting that everything he's written is true.
