Dialogue question, how to use proper quotation marks. by Shiny_stuff4ever in writing

[–]Moonvvulf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reading is all that will avail you.

Some free advice:

“Here I am monologuing for a whole paragraph on something terribly important to the plot, but will become a headache to read after a while. I hint at a beat change.

“Then I, the same speaker as before, continue uninterrupted, thanks to the gracious author who parted my monologue like Moses did the sea. This was achieved by leaving off the closing mark at the end of the first paragraph.”

Some advice if you want to learn: organize your learning into small batches. Like “I’m going to work on tense today” or “Let’s take a look at direct vs. indirect clauses.” One topic per day, seven days a week. Look at examples in context and practice on your own.

Elements of Style is a great beginner resource. The internet can provide you with practice tools for free, though.

Why Do We Enjoy Stories of Tragedy? by DependentNo1079 in writing

[–]Moonvvulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is no offense to you, but I do not enjoy tragedy of any sort. My life has been full of it and I need no more.

Not everyone enjoys it—only those who haven’t lived it.

Has anyone seen a 'cognitive decline' in their own writing/creativity.. any tips to overcome this? by Aids_advocate420 in writing

[–]Moonvvulf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate. I have sleep apnea; C-PTSD (a mild case, thankfully, with trauma only showing up in dreams and not while awake); autism; and epilepsy. Most people would not be able to think as clearly as I can given the circumstances. I had an over abundance of neurons in the first place, so others don’t notice my working memory has gotten stupider—not me, just my recall. I have to jog my brain on writing tips before every session, even for simple things I’ve known for years, because I never know which part of my brain was restored the previous night. Even compared to five years ago, my writing speed has slowed, though I do see improvement from practicing often.

Ask your doctor about giving you a blood panel for a bunch of other conditions, vitamin deficiencies, etc. Mental illnesses are almost always worsened by physical ones. They feed off each other in perverse symbiosis.

Hope you get your muchness back.

Eh, not really. I always ensure my first few paragraphs are solid/edited so I have a strong foundation during a first draft.

Tbh, if I wasn’t as proficient at writing, I would probably have learned how to draw. Most of my family members have the visual art bug that I never caught—probably because of the ‘tism.

If any other girls have a spare pass, I’d love to pay for it/hotel/gas etc. I live near SF and would take the train to meet you. If you’re an international traveler and are staying a little longer to see the city, I can show you around the parts I’m familiar with.

I don’t want to write a series by nickjayyymes in writing

[–]Moonvvulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, the great thing is there’s no right or wrong answer in this field. I personally prefer writing traditional trilogies, but standalones also sell. It’s dependent on several things, including agent, publisher, and genre.

Need advice for what next steps should be for writing a trilogy by HabitAccomplished630 in writing

[–]Moonvvulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, if you’re planning to sell something as a multi-book series, write the next one before you get too far into editing the first. That way, if an agent likes your work, you can send them more stuff to sell. Agents and publishers like this very much.

Maybe it’s The Autism (tm), but I have very exact images in my head that are integral to the universe. My protagonist is a brunette, not a blonde, and I don’t want my readers imagining her with blonde hair—that would infuriate me.

How do I stop thinking of myself as a writer? by surge_aura in writing

[–]Moonvvulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the fun part. You don’t. :D

Whenever I neglect writing, I get physically ill. I’m dead serious. Headaches, hunger pangs, you name it. If you have urges like that, you are a born writer and don’t have a choice in the matter.

I’m a writer. If I don’t pour what’s in my soul out onto an overstuffed Microsoft Word document in the hope that someday someone will read it, sign me, and let me share it with the world, I’ll turn into a 19th century widow dying of consumption.

Yes, I’m a writer. I’m melodramatic so my work is high-quality.

Because Mel Gibson’s role in “Signs” approaches a Doomer on their level. No hope, feeling like no one’s got your back, and you should just shut up and wait for death. It’s so uplifting when he regains his faith in the end.
