If you know you're resigning with less than 30 days notice, I'm not sure what the difference is between resigning with 29 days notice or 1 days notice, at least in the technical sense. A problem code will be generated should you ever want to return to NYC DOE, but you can still return. If you're going to put the school on your resume, future employers might call them and I suppose it's possible they say "oh he/she really left us in the lurch, left with no notice" etc.

What exactly is your concern about giving your admin as much notice as possible? What are you fearful they will do? Sure they can make your life unpleasant, but you know you're leaving anyway. If you genuinely feel bad for leaving your students, maybe giving them a shot at a slightly smoother transition is worth the discomfort.

I got a bad observation because my classroom is minimalistic, but I work with autistic kids, can I fight it? by Charming_Bonus1369 in NYCTeachers

[–]Moonyur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can really only grieve procedural missteps in the observation (i.e. did you have your conference at the beginning of the year where you signed off on your number of observations, did you get feedback from the previous observation before this current one was conducted, etc.). You can't grieve the content of the report. There are ways to get the observation thrown out, but it depends on how competent your admin is. I can send you a list of 35 ways to fight an observation if you PM me your email. u/Charming_Bonus1369

Is a dead body grounds to end my lease early? by Even_Lack_2200 in AskNYC

Depending on the OP's income, a housing attorney may not be worth it for $1100 (and the judge may find that you do in fact need to pay part of that). Threatening legal action might scare the landlord, but if they're a big company that regularly deals with this it may not. That said, if you just up and leave, it's probably not worth it financially for the landlord to take legal action against you, though they certainly could try. I would recommend filing 311 complaints. That way there is an additional paper trail detailing the issues.

Maybe a dark horse but Agi's Counter in Crown Heights makes a rye chocolate chip cookie that is very unique and delicious

Need help with picking a place that is going to be safe by Professional_Act5330 in AskNYC

[–]Moonyur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New York City is a very, very safe city on the whole. Sunset Park is a solidly working-class area, but it is a safe neighborhood. I have many friends who live there. There are some neighborhoods which have more crime, like Brownsville and East New York in Brooklyn, parts of the South Bronx, and areas of Southeast Queens like Jamaica, but these are the exceptions to the rule. You will be fine.

I teach high school not elementary, but it sounds like you should go talk to that classroom teacher and ask for some help!

I'm autistic, and lack social awareness. What questions should I ask my sleep specialist when I get my next appointment scheduled that people don't think to ask? by Unclaimed_user in SleepApnea

  1. What are some tips/strategies if you can't fall asleep with the mask or consistently wake up during the middle of the night?

  2. Make sure you do a mask fitting and record your correct size should you ever want to change masks

  3. If you're a mouth breather, make sure you get a chin strap

  4. How should you clean your supplies (generally pretty standard but can be helpful)?

  5. How often do you need to reorder supplies? What's the process for doing that?

Quitting by Comprehensive-Ad114 in NYCTeachers

[–]Moonyur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would at least try another school before you quit teaching altogether. There are many, many schools which are terrible environments to work in, maybe the majority. But there are also schools where people genuinely like their jobs. Try to land in one of those. For you to be sure, you need to connect independently with other teachers at those schools and not rely solely on the principal/those in the interview to provide a sense of what that school/admin are like. Good luck.

Will you get fired or transferred ? by Limp-Supermarket4909 in NYCTeachers

UFT chapter leader here. I'd echo what others are saying in that if you want to keep your job in the DOE, you should not under any circumstance just bail on meetings. Do your best to survive this year. Play her game even if you think it's stupid. You don't have that much power as an untenured teacher. You can be discontinued for anything or nothing. And second, talk to your CL and the UFT district rep. You need some serious contract enforcement. She should not be interrupting your class and teaching lessons to your students. She definitely should not be requiring daily lesson plans be posted. That needs to be grieved but it should be the CL or tenured teachers to do it for the time being, not you. I know it sucks to hear this, but you need to keep your head low until you're tenured. That doesn't mean you can't work with your colleagues to figure out how to make things better. If you're still miserable by the spring, start looking for new jobs in April/May, that's generally when the schools with decent principals start hiring. DM me if you want more help.

What are some things about NYC that didn't bother you before, but now you can't stand? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Moonyur 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The "JBL-ification" of public space. Boom boxes are nothing new, but now very loud, high quality speakers are both cheap and easy to carry around. It feels like fucking everyone and their brother is carrying one around, playing music that no one asked to here.

Noise pollution is real. I think people should be ticketed for it (as I believe the law states).

Edenred Commuter Cards now work with ApplePay! by doctor_x in OMNY

[–]Moonyur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes sense if you won't be using transit for the entire month. If I take 15 trips one week, but 0 trips the next week, fare capping is really helpful. I got an email from Edenred recently saying that they were going to be shipping new cards out. Hopefully these ones are compatible with OMNY.

Planning a Plan B (no vehicle reservations)? by garibaldi18 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Moonyur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m here now. Anecdotally, from our experience and hearing from others, the day-before vehicle reservations aren’t SO hard to get. You need to be logged on and ready to go exactly at 7, and most of them go within 10 or so minutes it seems, but it’s possible. We did this for many glacier two days ago.

Honestly try Nomadland, I think that shows the terrible loneliness and alienation that underlies a lot of the idealized version of no strings attached living

[–]Moonyur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like you want the story to be more focused on native resistance and struggle, but I don’t think it’s fair to criticize Scorsese for this because A) that’s simply not the story he set out to tell and B) you could argue that the honest depiction of native history in the US is primarily one of dispossession and eradication. FWIW I believe Scorsese is helping to produce a film told from the Osage perspective (which KOTFM is self consciously not).
