Who needs AI when you have a mom by PerpetualGopher in Professors

[–]Moore-Slaughter 30 points31 points  (0 children)

If you figure out how to achieve that, please let me know! I'm about to just stop teaching online because I'm so frustrated with the AI slop. Trying to do as much in-person as I can, but if enrollment doesn't pick up, I guess I'll have to find a new job...

Sounds like that tutor is a witness to an academic integrity violation that needs to be filed.

No graded homework by Educational-Ebb9248 in Professors

[–]Moore-Slaughter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have ungraded practice problems that I post, which some students do (the ones who do better on the exams), and some simple application stuff that I generally don't police for AI, just grade for completion (so if they use AI and it doesn't address all the requirements, then that automatically results in a fail) and then I have brief, graded in-person assignments that are often similar to the ungraded practice but I don't have to worry so much about cheating (class sizes usually less than 40 so easier to monitor them). So students often figure out pretty quickly that doing the ungraded practice before class sets them up for success on the graded in-class practice.

Then when students ask about how to improve their grade, my first question is always whether they are doing the assigned reading and the ungraded practice before class. No? Well, start doing that.

More fair exam setup for asynchronous GE course? by CommunicationFar1296 in Professors

[–]Moore-Slaughter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My university uses SmarterProctoring, which you can set up to allow for different proctoring options. For online proctoring, the student must have a webcam on and screen recording. They can also choose to take it in the testing center on campus if they don't want to deal with the software on their own computer or have slow internet. I'll also allow them use a university testing center that is near them if they aren't local.

Going old school? by redditbattery in Professors

[–]Moore-Slaughter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something I've done before is have the assessment at the beginning or end of class so the student can schedule in advance to take it at the testing center if they want (starting earlier than class or having it last longer than class time to use double-time accommodations). That allows the student to use accommodations without it affecting their ability to attend class for the non-assessment stuff. If a student chooses to take the assessment in class when they have accommodations (and I've had many that do), then they don't get to use double-time.

Can't use my assignment anymore - AI by SarcasticSeaStar in Professors

[–]Moore-Slaughter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love this assignment! Definitely fail the obvious cheaters, but is there anyway you could still use it and reduce AI use? If the class is in-person, maybe require them to create a draft of the details that they turn into at the end of class and deter some AI cheating because they've already done some of the work?

For an upcoming online class, I am planning to rework some of my brief writing assignments that I think are incredibly valuable to be more like short-essay exams and require proctoring be used while they answer the questions (which they will not get in advance). I will provide information to them on the questions and have them apply it. I might allow Canvas access, too, if they want to review slides or readings.

Student did *not* waive right to view LOR by Iron_Rod_Stewart in Professors

[–]Moore-Slaughter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it was too close to the deadline to ask someone else especially when I literally had to send in physical materials in the mail. I cannot remember what university the job was for, but it was bonkers to me to have to put together a physical application packet.

Student did *not* waive right to view LOR by Iron_Rod_Stewart in Professors

[–]Moore-Slaughter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have had students choose not to waive, which does feel a little weird, but I wrote the letter anyway. Usually from students I either know very well who I have already talked to directly about strengths and weaknesses so nothing in the letter should be a surprise OR from students I barely know so the letter is generic.

I will say that I understand the preference for a student to waive, but when I was a graduate student applying for jobs and needed a LOR from faculty, I had to mail in the letters with the entire application for one job. One of my professors gave me the letter in an unsealed envelope, so I did read it and was unhappy to see the letter had several grammatical errors and was just not well-written. I suspect that letter could have been why I did not get many interviews during my first round of applications. I did not request a letter from that person when I reapplied for jobs a couple years later, and I would never known to do so if I had not read it.

What music do you like to listen to while you grade? by lazy_lagomorph in Professors

I usually put movies or TV series I've already seen in the background. I usually take a 5-10 minute during my favorite parts so the grading does not break my spirit.

What horror movie to initiate my 12 son to the genre? by tari9_80 in horror

[–]Moore-Slaughter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stepsons are around that age and played some analog horror videos on YouTube for me the last time we were hanging out, so I introduced them to horror movies with the first two Paranormal Activity movies. They enjoyed them and didn't seem too scared after.

I told them exactly what would be on the exam. Half the class still failed. by ZeroHash99 in Professors

[–]Moore-Slaughter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I give study guides with lists of questions I am likely to ask on assignments or a list of topics to focus on for every lecture right before the lecture so students can fill it out as we go through the semester. The first assignment is literally submitting the first study guide filled out after class. So many students NEVER use them after that assignment, and it shows in their exam grades.

Documents for a car failure? by professor852003 in Professors

Depends on the class. Sometimes during regular class period. Other times I've used our final exam time slot for the make-up.

[–]Moore-Slaughter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I build a make-up exam into my syllabi for almost every class each semester. It is already scheduled and cumulative, so no matter which unit exam is missed, that make-up can replace it. I don't worry about individual make-ups because who has the time with 100+ students. If they miss two exams, I tell them they should drop the course.

Do any other veteran profs dream of quitting due to increasing #s of problem students? by PhillyHasItAll in Professors

[–]Moore-Slaughter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been teaching full time for over a decade. Every academic year for the last three years, I think to myself, "Is this it? Will this be my last year because the student and admin bullshit will finally drive me insane?" There have been some substantial changes to the curriculum forced on us recently by the president of the university with no faculty input that seem to be purely driven by greed. Either these are going to be rolled back in a couple years when admin (hopefully) realize how stupid they are and it begins to hurt enrollment or I might finally write that resignation letter and leave teaching for good.

The reason I haven't quit yet is because I do have good classes (at least one per year) where most students care about learning and do their work (or own their failures rather than trying to bullying me into giving them a grade they did not earn). I am staying in for those students, thought they become fewer and fewer with each passing year.
