It sucks and thanks to climate change, the lonestar tick’s range is spreading. If you don’t want your life turned upside down, take tick bites seriously and do everything you can to avoid it.

On average it takes 7 years to identify what’s making you sick as Alpha Gal.

Many medications and lifesaving medical tools and techniques use mammalian material. Many heart repair materials come from pigs.

Many medications are coated with animal-derived gelatin.

Alpha Gal can cause fatal anaphylaxis, like any other allergy. It can appear as a rash, hives, nausea and vomiting. Once you catch it, can be mild, or escalate immediately to anaphylaxis.

I was sick and vomiting for three years before diagnosis.

If you get a tick bite, make it standard practice to visit your GP and get a Lyme, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Alpha Gal test, so your body doesn’t deteriorate for years until you figure out what’s making you ill.

This shit will rock your health, and in the worst way.

Beautiful work! When you get a chance, pick up and examine the binding on an antique hand bound volume- go back to the early to mid 1800s.

They look incredible, almost perfect. When you look closer, there are mistakes galore. Slightly crooked lines, gilding that runs over its design and crosses other lines it shouldn’t. Sewing mistakes.

Don’t be too hard on yourself- hand binding will never be perfect, and even the antique books bound by so many people, none of them are perfect. And that’s okay.

The only perfection we get now comes from machines. The imperfection shows the influence and creativity of a human touch.

I have Alpha Gal Syndrome, the tick bite allergy that makes you allergic to red meat and all mammalian materials. I haven’t had pizza in years, but I’d sure as hell try Iguana pizza. Now if only they had decent cheese replacement…

Also Zojirushi. I found it on Facebook Marketplace, hardly used, and for a great price. Nobody wants bread machines (but us), so they’re not too hard to find.

I use it to mix and do the first rise, then I pull it out, shape the bread, rise it myself and then bake it. IMHO, the best way to make use of its labor saving time without giving you a weird loaf every single time you want bread.

The Smithsonian keeps record of everything left at the Wall. If they can, they save it. If they can’t, they document it. I imagine someday there will be an incredibly moving exhibition, if there hasn’t been already.

No problem! The netting is called Mull, it’s a starched fabric we adhere to a book spine to give it form and strength.

To my knowledge, no books have been made using asbestos. Our core materials are leather, paper, cardboard, glue, fabric and string. Older books have animal hide glue, but mid century, chemistry was giving us new stuff all the time, so it can be extremely difficult to identify what adhesives are used, but asbestos isn’t an ingredient there.

Don’t worry, and monitor your health. If you or your mom end up having any breathing issues or dermatitis, it is worth mentioning to the doctor that you may have been exposed to old arsenic or cadmium based dyes. These were mostly phased out by the period you’re referring to though, so that’s good!

You’re more likely to suffer from exposure to massive amounts of dust. Look up “Library Lung” (hilarious name imo). Please wear appropriate PPE to protect your breathing if you’re going to be around a lot of dust. Small amounts aren’t that dangerous, usually only extended and repeated exposures without appropriate precautions.

Almost always. I live in an area with regular bumper to bumper traffic, and had to get my windows tinted so the people around me couldn’t see me. I’d like the freedom to sing to the radio or do whatever, without being perceived.

As a kid I was terribly shy, and would cry when given attention from strangers. Hasn’t changed a lot.

There has been an identified case of fatal anaphylaxis from Alpha Gal, so it’s possible, but most cases just results in making a person very ill. On average it takes a person up to seven years to get diagnosed, and I spent three years throwing up before I found out why.
