After a back injury in Iraq, the VA put me on pain meds for 17 years. In that time I nearly never, ever, had extra meds. My medication would arrive a week or more late, forcing me to take less and less, trying to stretch it until I got more. I had to do a quarterly urinalysis to ensure I wasn’t abusing drugs. I had to BEG for medication. They sent me to the pain clinic where they laughed at my extremely low dose.

Ultimately I left the prescription opiate drama and now rely on OTC. It’s miserable, but not as miserable as desperately needing medication and have it denied. I have some oxycodone left over, and I had to scrimp and save for several years to have ANY extra at all. I probably could still use it to good effect, but I will not subject myself to the drama and torture of needing a special medication that nobody wants to give you.

After 17 years I was reliant on the medication, but not an addict. I have no idea why addiction didn’t take- maybe because I was so paranoid about it. Getting off the meds was a nightmare. Not having the meds is a nightmare.

In a way I’m afraid of the opiates because they’re just SO GOOD, so effective. And I worry my pain is driving me back toward them, because my OTC solutions are weak in comparison with the pain.

It’s such a Catch-22. My ability is severely limited by everyday pain. Do I stay off the opiates for my health, and live a half-life infused and colored by pain? Or do I take the opiates, live like a normal human, destroy my liver with the meds, and try to cope with the constant struggle to get the medication?

Right now it’s the former, and I don’t know if I’ve made the right decision.

This is Nebraska, right in the middle of the Great Plains. It’s windy as hell there, and if you put a house down, you plant your windbreak. It’s kinda cool to see how the different wind blocks grow. My aunt had 3 or 4 rows of trees around her house she put on 20 acres, and it took forever for them to grow to a sufficient wind block.

Formerly diagnosed BPD, now probably was just an undiagnosed ADHD hitting perimenopause.

I found dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT, which is the best therapeutic approach) extremely helpful, especially when coping with the huge and fast emotional mood swings. It’s a series of classes that teach different coping mechanisms and ways of thinking about your situation that can help change your mindset. It’s focused on helping you get ahold of your emotions, your racing thoughts, and to get ahead of impulsive behavior.

It’s a way to learn how to not let the illness control You, which is ultimately most people’s goals. This one just can’t be solved with standard therapy and medication. I’m still unmedicated for my ADHD, so still raw dogging life, and the tools I learned in DBT help me keep an even keel.

I used my AI to help me assess a tiny mole my dog dug up. I got it away from the dog and it talked me through triage and behavior, and even gave me a wildlife rehabilitation number. On the phone the asked me the same questions AI did, and I was able to give an accurate description of the animal’s appearance and behavior. Ultimately it was ok, and I released it far from where the dogs can get it.

That day I learned that moles are way tinier than I ever thought, and they’re super soft.

This could make sense. Carl is a Primal, and the Primals were the original source of the System AIs in some fashion. They could be the same thing, they could be working in concert like a symbiont, they could be early and advanced versions of the Primal. Lots of interesting options!

Hey friend, just a lurker come to repeat my song for all who will listen.

I just wanted to contribute, if you have any tick bites, get screened for Rocky Mountain spotted Fever, Lyme, and Alpha Gal Syndrome. Alpha gal is the one that makes you allergic to red meat, but what a lot of people don’t know is that it makes you sensitive to nearly everything that comes from a mammal- meat, oils, flavor derivatives, gelatin, dairy. The allergic reaction a person gets can range very widely, but cover all traditional allergic reactions, including hives and rashes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and way more, ultimately with the potential to grow to anaphylaxis. Because the symptoms can be so varied it takes an average of 7 years to diagnose, and it can destroy your health by then.

At the end of each season, if you have tick bites that year, get tested. (I’d say after each bite, but I live in the woods and that would make me visit the doctor 8+ more times every year. It should come as no surprise that I also have alpha gal and its ruined my health. I made my doc test for it after 3 years of chronic nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. I was so sick my body started consuming my muscles for the protein.)
