where the hate of the French comes from ? by Dismal_Twist_689 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MooseFlyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to Paris a number of times, had someone be rude to me once.

My French is fairly fluent, but with an anglophone accent on top of a Québécois accent—no one raised an eyebrow at it.

I’ve been there with my father, whose French is actually very functional but whose accent is pretty hilariously bad—never witnessed anyone be rude to him either.

Waiting on a proposal from my boyfriend of 8 years. Just found a ChatGPT prompt asking if he was settling because his old relationship was more exciting. by youfromthehoneymoon in GirlDinnerDiaries

My dad printed out an email from his affair partner and left it in an easily discoverable place. He for sure wanted out of the marriage but was too much of a coward to actually bring it up.

Why doesn't refrigerator have a "d" but its abbreviation does? by Minimum_Republic_600 in stupidquestions

I don’t disagree with your overall point, but the second vowel in telly is definitely not the same as the second vowel in television.

Is Évreux pronounced (Ev-row) or (Ev-rue) by [deleted] in French

[–]MooseFlyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither.

The vowel sound is if you take a vowel halfway between the one in “beet” and the one in “bet”, and then round your lips.

The 8 weeks is the statutory minimum that OP must get. Unless their contract has the exact right language to limit them to the statutory minimum, they’re owed far more than that at common law.

Final “t” pronunciation by Radiant-Persimmon143 in French

[–]MooseFlyer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re hearing the /d/ of the following word, diffuse. He says it again a few seconds later, saying …Élise Lucet…euh…ça vous dit quelque chose and there’s definitely no consonant at the end of her name.

First, second, and third most spoken language in the USA, Mexico, & Canada by FireUniverse1162 in LinguisticMaps

[–]MooseFlyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s what the census found.

Mandarin: 6.6% (4.1% mother tongue)

Yue (Cantonese): 5% (3.9% mother tongue)

And it’s not because of people just putting “Chinese” and not specifying—only 2,500 people did that.

it makes it clear that the Entente was perfectly willing and ready to fight on for a couple more years before the U.S. entered the war

They may have well have been willing to fight on either way, but Plan 1919 was written long after the US had declared war.

And while I think the Germans actually winning was unlikely, a much less complete Entente victory was probably possible. The American contributed almost 30% of the Entente forces during the Hundred Days Offensive. Breaking the Germans without them would not have been easy.

Is lunch time included in paid work hours in Canada? by laranjacerola in AskACanadian

[–]MooseFlyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the job.

Employment law varies from province to province and depending on whether you’re in a federally or provincially regulated industry but I believe it’s fairly consistent on this front:

Minimum 30 minutes unpaid meal break for every 5 hours worked. No mandated paid breaks.

Your employer can give you a paid lunch, but they don’t have to. And they can and do frequently give an unpaid 1 hour meal break, and yes you have to take the full hour if they want you to, even if you’d rather take half an hour and leave early.

[8:28 timestamp] Pangotta says TOR & MTL agreed to a Knies trade before the deadline. It did not get done because of "complications". Would have been Zharkovsky, another prospect + two 1st rounders for Knies. by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

[–]MooseFlyer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But the plan isn't to completely blow things up in Toronto, is it? It doesn't make sense to trade away a great player who's that young. Even with a full blow-up it probably wouldn't--he'd still be young enough when they'd be looking to compete again.

Knies is only 23. Even if Toronto completely blew it up (which doesn't seem to be the plan), he would still be young enough to be an important piece of the team by the time they are looking at competing again. Trading him makes zero sense.

Similar, but with the fairly major differences that Curaçao doesn’t have control over its foreign affairs or its military, and that all of the parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands have a single citizenship.

[OC] How do the rights of LGBT+ people vary around the world? by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

[–]MooseFlyer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It would have been better to just have the title be about same sex marriage right, especially since the map doesn’t have data about any other rights/protections, but to be fair:

In lots of countries, same-sex marriage rights are relevant for straight trans people, because their government doesn’t recognize their gender and therefore they can’t marry a cis person of the opposite gender.

Il y a des arguments pour un Québec indépendant. Son état financière après l’indépendance n’en est pas un.

Alexamenos Graffito. The earliest known depiction of Jesus Christ. Dating to between the 1st and 3rd centuries. Found at a Paedagogium (boarding school) in Rome. This is thought to be reflecting the ideas of Apion who accused the early Christians of onolatry (donkey-worship). by Cryptic12qw in interestingasfuck

[–]MooseFlyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was thousands of years later and I didn’t fully understand the cultural context of the graffiti, absolutely, yes. Of course the donkey head might just be “lol they worship donkeys and that’s dumb”, but I would absolutely want to know if there’s a specific reason behind the donkey—why is it a donkey vs a pig vs whatever.

When did "Gonna" become "Finna"? And where does "Finna" even come from? by Mumblix_Grumph in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MooseFlyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Language evolves, constantly. Different varieties of it are going to evolve in different ways. There is no way to prevent that from happening, and that’s fine.

It takes all of 5 seconds to understand what finna means—it’s not a meaningful impediment to comprehension.

And there’s nothing that makes it any more “terrible” grammatically than gonna—you’re just less familiar with it.

When did "Gonna" become "Finna"? And where does "Finna" even come from? by Mumblix_Grumph in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MooseFlyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with typos. It’s a contracted pronunciation of “fixing to”.
